"Review of I Know You're Out There"

The opening lines of I Know You’re Out There… are the perfect interlude into this masterpiece that showcases the oozing talent of Mimi Burns and her 5 band mates’ talent that is found seeping through the cracks of the plastic jewel case that houses this hour long journey into some of the most original and mind-expanding Celtic Rock the world has come to know!

“Netherworld” begins with bagpipes that could have been slightly ‘bent’ using electronics and clever sequencing which give way to acoustic guitar, drums and electric guitar that smoothly build up into a marvelous perfection of tonal quality while still leaving enough room for Mimi’s wholesome vocals that seem to reach into the depths of your soul and shake you to the bone (in a good way)! This song sets the stage for the album as I imagine a pleased pub-like crowd dancing their jigs happily as the music flows freely through the atmosphere and creates a really BIG sound that gives way to a closing of bagpipes similar to that at the forefront of the track.

The next major milestone on I Know You’re Out There… is the 8 minute “psychedelic, didgeridoo-laced strong and extremely accessible” number that shares the same title as the album, “I Know You’re Out There.” This song brings enough complexity and inspiration that could fill the entire page you’re reading right now, but we’ll attempt to keep it short and sweet—“Masterful and complete, cinematic and captivating.” Mimi’s voice accompanied is softly accompanied by slightly militantly styled drums and note-bending violins that paint an image of battlefields of old along with a dense fog hanging close to the ground as we ride on the beaten trail of time. “Highly recommended to those who enjoy music of epic proportions.”

As we progress through the mid-section of this fabulously-crafted album, we pass many terrific songs and find ourselves dancing uncontrollably to the likes of “The Haunted” and “Gypsy Dance,” while the Blues-Folk-Rock-World instrumentation of “Come and Dance” seems to tell a story without words. This is definitely ‘real’ music for ‘real’ people and features infectious violin/guitar combinations that are sprinkled with seductively serene vocal offerings and can be described as having been cultivated in very rich ‘soil.’ The maturity of this sound spans many generations and is fabulous in form and structure while providing true realization of sound for what could be the first time in my life!

Sadly, all albums must come to an end, but to close with a song that leaves the listener craving more is a genius idea, and “Going Home” does well on both ends of this conundrum, with vocals that ride the beat with a sheer confidence and a slight nod to the sound of Tori Amos (just for a second) and a questionably similar under-beat to that of the Salsa style!

“A mind-expanding ‘must-add’—not only for the St. Patty’s Day playlist, but for each and every day of the year as well!”—Brian Ball, Director of Music & Talent - Brian Ball, Womens Radio

"Praise for I Know You're Out There"

Celtic folk rockers from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mimi Burns and her band whip up an addictive groove on their third album, thanks to some exhilarating Waterboys-esque acoustic rhythms, electric guitars that wouldn’t sound out of place on a 70’s rock album and Burns’ classic female folk-rock vocals. Fans of the Fairports and Steeleye Span will know what I mean. Standout rocker (and opening track) ‘Netherworld’ encapsulates perfectly what they’re about. Folky fiddles and pipes mesh with rock (solid) drums and guitars in fine style; the sort of sound that goes down a storm on the UK summer folk festival circuit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them middle of the bill at Cambridge sometime soon. - Leicester Bangs
