Minus World

Minus World

It might seem like a bad idea: 2 people get on stage, play to a Nintendo-inspired backing track and throw everyone a curveball by NOT playing purely dance music. But it works; intricate arrangments, smart lyrics and lots of energy make Minus World an unmissable - and very different - experience.

Biography

The seed for Minus World was planted when singer/keyboardist Justin Wiles asked himself, "what if I were a singer-songwriter, but I carried a synthesizer around instead of an acoustic guitar?" After some experimentation, Justin eventually opted to create a backing track of 8-bit glory, an orchestra of square and saw wavs, 808s and retro bells. After a few performances, the sound proved itself with some positive feedback.

Minus World proposed - modestly, of course - to humanize the harsh sounds of electronic music, giving it a more meaningful, thought-provoking quality. Even so, it lacked a certain punch in the execution; Justin brought aboard drummer Kat Williams to give it a new edge and fill out the Minus World sound.

So imagine the arrangments of Hey Rosetta! or Arcade Fire, combined with the sonic aesthetic of your favourite Nintendo game (particularly Final Fantasy) and sprinkle some David Bowie-esque vocals on top... and you'll begin to see what sets Minus World apart from the rest.

Lyrics

Glass Lion

Written By: Justin Wiles

All the clouds want to give me away,
it's door to door and down the drain and a thousand birds from yesterday.
We keep the sky so far away while city streets run through our kids.
Won't a mother's hand take me for a spin?

It comes and goes, it comes and goes, it comes and goes...
But do you turn away, do you turn away, do you turn away?
Is this all you want and nothing more, just to roll along this concrete shore.
You said you'd make your move, bring them to their knees!

Haven't you been waiting all your life?
Haven't we been praying for you?
Haven't you been praying all your life?
Haven't we been waiting...

What if I asked you to stay?
What if I took you south across these plains, if we pressed the earth 'til naught remained?
Our home is where the echo fades and from our chest the compass sings.
Oh I know it drives you made, these flashing lights against the mountain span.

It comes and goes, it comes and goes, it comes and goes.
But do you turn away, do you turn away, like you're made of sand and you're gonna fall through the crowded sky and the ocean sprawl...

Haven't you been waiting all your life?
Haven't we been praying for you?
Haven't you been waiting all your life?
Haven't we been waiting... haven't we been waiting for you...

When are we getting out of here?
We're standing at the ashes of a lion in its prime.
Look up, look up, don't look down,
how long can you keep it locked inside...

Slashes

Written By: Justin Wiles

Put on your black tie,
And your whitest noise.
We’re going to our funeral,
but I won’t lie, you’re looking good.

20 years like a shotgun in your mouth,
Well, you’re taller now!
But we’re just kids.
We’re just kids!

Hold on!
What do you remember?
Did you dream the future?
White lies,
What were your intentions,
When it became tomorrow?

You’re a sinner these days,
Or so I hear.
Oh you and your apocalypse!
Carry on, if you so please.

These heavy winds and rising tide
Are raising hands in heavy times,
But it’s only change,
It’s only change!

Hold on,
What do you remember?
Did you dream the future?
White lies,
What were your intentions,
When it became tomorrow?

We’re just kids, we’re just kids
These arms are wood and these legs are stilts
Our bodies are light, but we fake it well
We drew our masks a little closer to Hell
But we’re just kids, we’re just kids…

Year of the Scientist

Written By: Justin Wiles

You’re always looking at your shadow
Always looking at your brother’s arms’ length
Listening to your best friend’s favourite band
Are you waiting for God to close her eyes?
Are you waiting for God to close her eyes?

I heard a rumour that
You long for true love yet
You’re loath to wrest control
In fear of ‘eighty –
-four eyes in the room
And nothing to lose,
But you can’t move.
You can’t move.

She’s in a fix for sure
Just like the other girls
Cool hand, steady grip,
Real men shoot from the hip –
-sters like you have
Nothing to lose
But you can’t move.
You can’t move.

And on the day you died, on the day you died,
You stayed up all night, your lashes cut wide.
As if to imply, despite your ghosted dreams,
Only now you’d die, only now you’d die.

Your shoulders make a good windowsill
It’s got a rhythm, sure, but borrowed still!
You’re pretty good, when the rest of us stand.
Are you waiting for God to close her eyes?
Are you waiting for God to close her eyes?

And on the day you died, on the day you died,
You stayed up all night, your lashes cut wide.
As if to imply, despite your ghosted dreams,
Only now you’d die, only now you’d die.

Set List

You wouldn't recognize any of our songs, so it's pointless to write them all out. The important thing is, yes, we have enough material to perform up to 50 minutes of music.
