"White & Black - EP Review"

Dana James is the voice of a storyteller.

Ms. James has presented her soulful tunes to us for the first time on EP. The original tracks truly show off her abilities to represent several genres in each song. Each track gives the listener a reason to stay interested in the story she’s singing. You can hear some of her vast vocal skills on “Love of the World.” But it’s not until you really listen to “White and Black” that you get the whole story of who exactly Dana James is. This song is full of the attitude of this feisty, strong, and independent woman. The strength in her voice really puts the listener in a funky blues feeling that you just can’t stop your head from bobbing to.

If you want to put this talent into a genre, you could say that she is someone along the lines of No Doubt in the mid to late 90’s pop realm. You can really hear that comparison when you listen to another track called “Special.” It’s another catchy and fun filled, can’t help but move to it, kind of song that you’ll fall in love with. Follow the music long enough and you’ll see your dance moves going along with the horn section during the chorus.

You can hear the training in her voice in every one of these original songs but she’s definitely no vocal student robot. She gives you the little bit of connection all listeners long to hear. You can feel her pain when she sings the words to “One More Song.” Although the song itself isn’t slow, the words and her sweet and savoy voice tell you something just isn’t going right.

Dana James’ White & Black is a perfect example of the woman behind the curtain. Although sometimes in true pain, she still has a head bobbed, groove feelin’, smooth and rough attitude to share with the masses.

Bio

Brought up with healthy helpings of classic musicals, Italian opera, and big band music, it was a long road to the voice that Dana James sings with now. At age 7, she started taking piano lessons, but it wasn’t long before teacher noticed a common thread when it came to the pieces his young student practiced and those she did not. They had words. After a few years, he sat down with her mother and simply said, “She wants to sing.”

Dana began taking private voice lessons at age ten and thrived. In a family that had a tradition of learning by ear, Dana was keenly aware of the versatility she could achieve with formal training. Early on, she focused on a classical and operatic sound, believing the habits she would learn would strengthen her instrument.

At Berklee, Dana learned to translate her classical training into a contemporary sound and was a featured performer on the Berklee Performance Center stage on several occasions, spent time in the studio on jingle projects and original works, and began writing her own music. Fortunate to study performance skills under Livingston Taylor, Dana presented original music for the first time during her senior year, and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Performance.

Now living in Los Angeles, Dana has joined the ranks of the Hollywood hopefuls and is recording her first EP.
