Bio
Beginnings...
Miss Maud's Folly was formed at the tail end of 2005 by singer/songwriter Angie Kirby. The line-up has shifted slightly since then, but the current ensemble sees Angie joined by Eloise Nancie Gynn and and Sion Trefor.
Our style...
It's open to interpretation, but we would say, folky gypsy jazz, influenced by Flamenco, Arabesque and Eastern European music.
A little bit about the band and how we work together...
For me, the creative process begins when I sit down with my guitar and happen upon a riff or chord progression that catches my ear. The lyrics and vocal melody come from whatever mood or image the music evokes; sometimes fairytale fantasies that play out in my head, other times, based on either my own narrative or someone else's, for which I feel a surge of empathy.
Once I have the workings of a song, I then go to my incredibly talented band mates who decorate it with beautiful arrangements on cello, piano and flute.
Eloise is our cellist, flautist and composer extraordinaire. She studied composition for her masters and has just written a short piece for the London symphony orchestra, through the Panufnik Scheme!
Sion is our incredibly gifted pianist. He also did a masters in composition; was a concert pianist from a very young age and is always in serious demand for his musical ability and, (as I'm sure he would argue), intoxicating charm!
We've recently begun writing some pieces together on guitar, cello and piano, as a starting point. It's a really exciting process, creating something together from scratch, and I love to watch the dynamic between us shift in the flow of creativity.
