"Nashville Metal Bands reviews Mistakes Were Made"

Nashville Metal Bands
So I got a note from 'Low End' Jen of the band Mistakes Were Made and I'll be honest, I've had a busy week and really didn't feel like doing a review this evening...

I had just spammed the world this evening with a bunch of NMB Welcome Banners (yeah, you know the ones!) and since Jen was a new LIKE for NMB she got one too.

Of course, being the marketing junkie I am, if I can tell a LIKE came from a band member, I look for the band and tag them in it too - double dip!

Anyway, that brought me to the Mistakes Were Made Fanpage and so I decided since I was there that I would check the track that Jen had invited me to...

First, let me say this wasn't what I expected! And those of you who know me know that if I am writing anything, it's because I LIKE it! I do NOT write negative reviews, so if you have ever been reviewed by me, it's because you made an honest connection with me through your music!

Looking over the MWM Fanpage in retrospect, I see the genre as "Rhymecore" and go, "Oh, yeah I can see that"!

I'm sure the band gets this all the time, but the first thing that popped into my head was early P.O.D. stuff, like from the Brown era, less raw than Snuff The Punk, but less polished from The Fundamental Elements of Southtown. With that said, I know P.O.D. is off many people's radar screen these days, but if you are a fan, Mistakes Were Made is a MUST!

But, on to the bands own merits...

Parker's vocals are rhythmic yet soulful and definitely have the necessary bite during the heavier sections.

Keenan's guitar work is a touch understated, but in a good way; it works for the songs. And when the song needs some shred, Keenan delivers!

Jen and Rashaun are lock-step-tight as far as a rhythm section goes with her right hand being married to his left foot at all the right times. Although each are able to break away and show us a little spot-light here and there as well!

"For You" has that island groove that gets interrupted with a metallic tsunami and some really nice tapping guitar work right around 02:38. Overall a driving rocker that starts strong and finishes stronger!

I was compelled to listen a little more...

"Where are The Bodies" starts with a nice little bass riff and runs headlong into an over modulated vocal effect and a solid rock riff. I'll be honest, I would rather some of the background "screeching" be toned down in the mix a tad but the bass on this one is awesome! A tasteful solo brings this one into the final stalking pattern that closes out the track.

"Wastin Mine" almost starts out with an early Iron Maiden bass/guitar part for the first 15 seconds and then falls into the bands familiar rhyemcore. This one is easy going from the Bob Marley style track to the smooth rhyme delivery that gets the T-Pain treatment in the chorus. An interesting choice of elements to fuse together.

This is not going to be every metal-head's can of brew... But if you are a metal-head with depth, appreciation for talent and a taste of Jamaican rhythms and rhyme then Mistakes Were Made could be just what gets your dreads flying high!

Any band that could get me motivated to write a review this evening is worthy of the coveted NMB "Metal Nod"!

Bio

Mistakes Were Made is a groove metal band fronted by an intelligent hip-hop emcee. Different, yes; but Mistakes Were Made has proven to be a favorite in all circles opening up for such acts as iwrestledabearonce and Lil Wyte.

The journey began in 2009 when bassist Jen Hodges moved to Nashville upon graduating from Berklee. Jen wanted to write organic live instrument rap beats with metal influence, and thusly began a search for a rapper. She scoured craigslist her first week in town, and came upon vocalist Mike Parker's ad as a self described "acoustic hate rapper." Jen thought the ad comical, and decided to meet with Parker. The pair had a similar vision for their music and began writing/ searching for musicians. They finally found their drummer, Rashaun Davis, in 2010. The trio gigs and records with guitarist Matt Holden.

Rashaun lends his gospel background to the mix, providing in the pocket beats to Jen's funk influenced bass lines. Matt offers his knowledge of the fretboard to give the band it's edge. Parker tops off the group with highly syncopated verses, catchy hooks, and brutally honest lyrics about life, the man, and all the mistakes made in between.

The group just finished their first LP, and is in the process of pressing. The finished product will be available through www.facebook.com/mistakesweremade soon!
