Misty Blue

The Misty Blue Jazz Quintet was formed in June 2007. Five musicians from the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Berklee College of Music, joined together to create a unique sound blending American Jazz and Blues with the sensual, both melancholy and upbeat songs of the French Caribbean. Ernst St Cine (alto saxophone, guitar and vocals), Kushelia Sukhu (vocals and keyboard), Mary Howells (piano), Hodari Fenderson (bass, guitar, vocals), and Christopher Narainen (drums) bring with them the flavors of their multiple cultural backgrounds: Haiti, Mauritius, Boston, Switzerland, India, and Trinidad. The music of Misty Blue ranges from high-powered Caribbean dance music to intimate and lyrical jazz ballads, to reggae or spoken word with vocals carrying messages of love, striving for social justice, sadness at the suffering in the world and a call to thought and action in our communities. Misty Blue performances exude with energy and the joys of life through the powerful voice of Kushelia Sukhu and the strong rhythmic drive of drummer Christopher Narainen, blending complex and wild Afro-Indian beats from his native island of Mauritius . The band is also dedicated to bringing live Jazz back to the communities and neighborhoods where it originated from, and sharing its discovery with the Youth in these communities. Misty Blue performs regularly in clubs, cultural centers, churches, schools and at private functions in the Boston area.
