Misty Heavens

If you ask Misty Heavens when she started singing, she’ll tell you, “I was born singing”. For her, music isn’t just something she makes, music is something she is. Life is a musical, and whether she’s center stage or stage right, you can’t help but take notice of her energy and passion for her art. You can hear it in her voice, you can see it in her face, and you can feel it in her refreshing fusion of R&B, Hip-Hop and Soul.

Born in Bronx, NY and raised in suburban New Jersey, her love for music was apparent at a young age. But in the Heavens’ West Indian household, education was top priority. At the age of 7, she took the stage for the first time in a musical theatre performance, and from then all, she soaked up every opportunity there was to perform not only in school but in church. From lead vocalist in church to several performance groups beginning in elementary school and continuing through high school, the performances didn’t stop. From NJ State Children’s Choir to Senior High School Class Vocalist her talent was recognized by peers and dignitaries alike.

It wasn’t long before her educational pursuits lead her to Howard University and the Washington, DC area, where she has since made her home. If you’re in the DC area, you can find her performing her original music in local DC hotspots including Cada Vez, and BarNun. But if you’re not in DC, it’s only a matter of time before Misty Heavens makes her way to you. She has performed all over the country and most recently all over the world. She was very excited to finish out 2005 and begin 2006 performing on the Pacific Circuit of the Armed Forces Entertainment Tour. With performances throughout Guam, Korea, and Japan, 2006 could not have gotten off to a better start.

You may have heard the phrase “the international language of love” bounced around from time to time. But it wasn’t until I got on tour that I actually thought about the phrase. The truth is, the only international language there is, is music. We may not realize it as much in the US because we make so much of our own music here, so naturally its mostly in English. But it becomes apparent when your rockin to the latest reggae song or reggaeton beat. They could be saying ANYTHING….and we’re steady bouncing.

My trip overseas was amazing. I learned so much…and didn’t realize how much it would mean to our soldiers. Being able to bring them a piece of home, and not just bring them a piece of what home is now, but even a piece of what home used to be. So many of our soldiers gave up everything, there home isn’t even home anymore. We performed some old school songs, I you could tell it was bringing back good memories for them. We got so many heartfelt, touching thank you’s. It was such a blessing for me just as much as it was for them.

But what intrigued me the most was performing for the citizens in each country. That’s where the international language really comes in. They were grooving so hard, and dancing so much, that until you start talking to them about the music, you completely forget they don’t know any English at all. Its amazing the power music has over people, no matter what your race, religion or ethnicity.
