"Single Review: Mitch King - 'Burning'"

Nomadic singer-songwriter Mitch King releases evocative folk single, 'Burning'.

It's very easy to make folk-rooted songs that fall under the label of pleasant, yet lacking in imagination. Often, we hear the same chord progressions, the same echoed vocals telling the same deflated stories. That's why it's so important that there's musicians like Mitch King around who sees his contemporaries, yet aims to stand up against them, instead of blending in next to them.

'Burning' is a hugely heartfelt and ultimately, uplifting, song. Affecting guitar notes fill the track with warmth like a summer breeze skimming a still sea, as dusty, stomping percussion helps keep the track driving forwards. Mitch's vocal takes on many forms, from bluesy folk to alternative rock to smooth 80s, always impressing, always delivered with sincerity and conviction.

As the track changes in dynamics, additional layers add evocative textures to the song. Sometimes moody, sometimes haunting, sometimes scorching with the burn of the sun, as the engaging lyrical content searches for catharsis amidst conflicting emotions. It's no surprise to hear that Mitch wrote this song whilst on the road, it has a wandering, reflective, nature to it that reminds me of the spaces in between each mile, with no definitive place to call home, just you and the sky.

On the track Mitch King explains: “Recording ‘Burning’ was the most enjoyable experience I’ve had in the studio so far. It was a whole lot of fun working together with Blake Malone and I felt my passion, as an artist was equalled by his passion as a producer. I’m very content with this track and it’s an accurate interpretation of my thoughts at the moment. We’ve brought new ideas to the table and I’m chuffed with the way this one’s turned out.”

"Music Video Recommendation: “Burning” by Mitch King"

Nomadic Australian indie folk singer/songwriter Mitch King delivers a heartfelt and inspiring gem with his latest single “Burning”. And also along with the marvel of his soundscape he brings a video that showcases visuals that are awe inspiring and completely beautiful. Inspired by life on the road (literally on the road as he sleeps on his van) he embraces all the beauty he sees, his experiences and life itself and with that creates a must listen gem. This indie folk track carries melodies and vocals that alone are a marvel to find, then you add the lyrics and it is just out of this world. One cannot help but feel motivated and pushed to really think about the life we are living and where we aim to go. He is truly one of those few storytellers touched by the fire that burns bright and is able to stir something in others. So I invite you to listen and really take this song and make it yours. Enjoy! - Wolf in a Suite

"MITCH KING’S ‘BELIEVE’ IS FOLK MASTERY"

Last September, we showed you Mitch King’s Burning—a fiery, impassioned folk-rock track that soundtracked the artist’s everlong journey on the road. Now, Mitch King continues to embrace the soulful heat on new track, Believe. Premiering exclusively on AAA Backstage, we’re proud to present the first listen of Believe before its release this Friday.

Instantly, Believe swells into that classic Mitch King folk mastery. He has a unique way of picking an acoustic guitar—something only the greats like Bon Iver posses, almost as if he was born to play it in the first place. His voice kicks in soon after—it’s warming and comforting and soars higher than he’s done before. Believe is the second taste from his upcoming EP.

Speaking of soaring, the extra flourishes Mitch King adds makes Believe a true standout. The undercurrent of strings and orchestration really send this track to the higher realms. Once the percussion kicks in, Mitch King brings in a clever use of reverb and vocal sampling that makes the chorus irresistible.

As someone who spends the majority of their life on the road, Believe holds an empowering message to stay true to yourself, never lose sight of your goal and keep working hard toward it. We can all learn something from Mitch King’s Believe.

“The more you believe the more you’ll create what you want out of life. Sometimes you have to let go of old ways of thinking and ingrained programs in the mind to sincerely believe in yourself, goals and passions,” details King.

We’ll say one last thing: we’re pretty relieved Mitch King doesn’t have any future shows planned because we were starting to worry about him. Always one to constantly tour, hopping state-to-state endlessly, it seems Mitch King has some time to relax for the time being. In the meantime, enjoy Believe below. - AAA Backstage

"White Night 2017 600,000 people came to party in Melbourne’s not so lit-up streets."

One of the most special parts of the evening (or early morning) was coming out of a Chinese restaurant at 3am and seeing a small crowd gathered at the corner of Little Bourke and Swanston streets, below the arches at the entrance to Chinatown. As we walked toward Swanston Street the musician sitting in the middle of the road began to play – harmonica, drums, guitar. His voice rang out and up Little Bourke Street and within minutes about 50 people had surrounded him – an intimate, open-air concert featuring a one-man blues band. People were dancing, stamping their feet, yelling in rapture. We were all transfixed. His name is Mitch King, and he was one of the best things I saw at White Night, no psychedelic lights required. - Broadsheet

Bio

Mitch King is a multi-instrumentalist from Australia.  Since starting out busking on the streets of his home town, he’s gone on to sell out Australian headline shows, performed internationally and was selected by America The Band as their only support for their 2019 Australian National Tour.

He's performed at many Festivals including St Kilda Festival, NYE on the Hill, Byron Bay Bluesfest and Blues on Broadbeach to name a few. US NFL Green Bay Packers used his track “Coming Back” to promote their Season Opener in 2016 and its since been streamed over 13 million times on Pandora radio, EP “Southerly Change” debuted at #2 on the Itunes Blues Charts for 10 days straight whilst single “Burning” has had over 2.5 million Spotify streams.

Mitch has been focusing on writing new material for the better part of 2019, collaborating with artists including The Temper Trap, Diesel and the Pierce Brothers. The future is definitely looking bright for Mitch as he starts recording his sophomore EP.

An “absolute explosion of talent, with fingertips of steel and vocal pipes of a howling stream train” is how his music has been described. His Rock-Folk and Roots and Blues style is a sweet mixture of inventive, electrified and acoustic music. Combine this with his dynamic live performances it’s easy to see how his audiences are left spellbound.

QUOTES
It was an eager and orderly crowd that filled the Perth Concert Hall and it was great to see a near full house for supporting artist, multi-instrumentalist Mitch King. Originally from Queensland, King has been supporting America the Band around the country. He opened the night with swampy, dirty blues, belted out through his acoustic, kick drum, foot tambourine and harmonica; he nails it as a one man band. His set was short but sweet mixed with some softer sounds, but Mitch ended on another blues ripper that got the crowd warmed up and ready for the main event.  X-Press Magazine -  2019

“Mitch King is an absolute explosion of talent, with fingertips of steel and vocal pipes of a howling steam train, this young lad would be one of our all time favourite artists to have ever graced the ‘Porch’. Great things are a comin’ for this musical love child of Kim Churchill and Ash Grunwald. Unbelievably spell binding to watch, this salty blonde blueshound is definitely one to keep your eye on.”  Sharni Honor – The Porch Sessions – 2016
