"Happy Birthday Emily! – a riot of fun at NXNE – Thursday, June 16, 2011"

I had too much to dream last night.
NXNE, the annual music festival swallows the entire city of Toronto for five days from June 15 to 19. Barely emembering the days where 300 bands in 30 clubs was the norm and dashing along Queen Street West to try to find Sully in some nondescript basement bar, then trying to cover 500 bands in 50 clubs, NXNE has exploded to include squares and parks and even the Toronto Pearson Airport. Plus NXNE has added a movie festival, too. The music, the music, the music is what NXNE is all about though.
So there could be no better circus to celebrate Emily Bones’s birthday that to be back with Mittenz at Silver Dollar again. Mittenz were a cataclysmic bundle of fun who kickstarted the night at 8 pm. A lot of musical might and flight of fancy. We just simply adore this quartet of ladies. And how could we forget to mention the matching dresses of the two wifeys?
Although it initially looked like they were going to be reduced to a four song set, they had extended time to almost forty minutes and delivered the goods, starting with Bucket List then their musical parade of catchy and beachy fun tunes. And keenly aware of the scene they throw in their dig at the Lady Caca who was in town during the fest for some other event down at MuchMusic. The early crowd swelled up in numbers and provided the impetus for Mittenz to perform at their best. - Joe Mac

"MITTENZ @ PRIDE 2011"

A long hot and amazing day spent carousing within the circles of Mittenz. Two sets starting within an hour of each other and much scurrying in between. But on either side of the scurrying were two frenetic sets of fun and furry fury à la Mittenz. - Joe Mac

""Discovering MITTENZ at C'est What""

On Thursday we headed over to C’est What on Front Street to hear Mittenz. This cute all chick band plays garage pop with Emily Bones and Mary Deth singing and playing guitar in a pleasant, easy to listen to pop, while accompanied by punk drummer Lindsay Bird. It’s a unique sound. The girls are cute, costumed and animated on stage. They’re fun to watch. They are Mittenz and they call their fans kittenz.

I spoke with the girls after the show and they told me they are working on a 6 track EP that they expect to release in the spring. They have applied to perform at the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival in August. The lineup for that show won’t be announced until the spring. They’re hoping to set up a tour once their EP is released.

You can find Mittenz anywhere online. They’re at themittenz.com and on social networking sites Facebook, Tumblr, Myspace, Youtube, Twitter and Reverbnation. - Angela R. Campbell

Bio

Mittenz is a trio of female powerhouse musicians reigning from Toronto, Ontario (Canada). With singer/guitarist Emily Bones, best friend Mary Deth on bass/vocals and Youtube sensation drummer Lindsay Bird, this pop/rock/punk band has become unstoppable. Their influences explain how they can range from the Distillers to the Dixie Chicks, with a side order of No Doubt. From their matching outfits, to communal ways of thinking and songwriting/harmonizing; their guiding philosophy will demonstrate how one Mitten is never complete without the other.

Mittenz has performed all across Toronto in many well known venues such as the El Mocambo, The Silver Dollar, and C’est What (to name a few). They have also been apart of many well established events in Toronto such as PRIDE week, NXNE, YOUTH DAY, GrrrlVIRUS and The Cabbagetown Festival. Mittenz has contributed to many non-profit community events, as well as charity/fundraisers such as “Bad Wedding” (a PRIDE party for HIV held at the Gladstone Hotel), MusiCounts Charity (Canada’s Music Education Charity to keep music programs in schools), Girls Rock Camp in Mississauga (fundraiser was held at the Courthouse in Toronto), War Child (“Busking For Change” at the Supercrawl in Hamilton, ON) “Pinktober” (A fundraiser for breast cancer research, held at The Hard Rock Cafe in Niagara Falls, ON). Emily and Mary Deth had also created a month long event to raise money in support of Haiti’s disaster relief called “Hands For Haiti” which as held at the Bleecker Street Co-op in Toronto. In the summer of 2011, Mittenz ventured into a few towns outside of Toronto, ON. They performed at the Summerfolk Music, Arts & Crafts Festival in Owen Sound ON, The Hard Rock Cafe in Niagara Falls ON, and the Gloucester Pool Marina in Muskoka, ON.

Plans for the future of Mittenz include touring throughout the summer, promoting their new album and continuing to write music for future records. They have been striving for 8 years and will continue along the turbulent road leading to success. Resilience has made itself their lifestyle; with hearts like lions and jewels for eyes.
