Mitzi Miller

Mitzi Miller is an award-winning journalist and the bestselling author of five books, including the upcoming Scholastic/Point teen series, Hotlanta. Miller is also a contributing writer for Essence, and has regularly contributed entertainment and relationship stories, as well as biting commentary and first-person pieces to a wide array of magazines, including Elle (U.K.), VIBE, Uptown, and Odyssey Couluer. Her extensive television experience includes regular appearances on VH1’s humorous list shows, as well as ABC’s top-rated morning show, Good Morning America, and The Food Network.

Prior to her work as a freelance journalist, Miller served as associate editor for JANE, where, in addition to her monthly “Sex, Sex, Sex” column, she frequently contributed celebrity features and quirky girly stories to the magazine’s entertainment section, including “Mitzi Lives Like A Privileged White Woman For A Week” and '”How To Date 8 Guys At Once,” which received a favorable mention in the Washington Post.

Before her position at JANE, Miller worked at HONEY, where she started her career in 2001 as an unpaid intern before quickly becoming the girl-around-town columnist for the hip magazine’s monthly feature, “Road Trippin’.” Readers quickly grew addicted to her many quirky, fun-filled adventures: Speed dating, learning how to surf in Hawaii, and spending time as an enlisted soldier in the United States Army’s boot camp were just a few of the highlights of her well-read column. Ms. Miller remained at HONEY for two years, during which she became the Entertainment Editor, received an honorable mention from the National Association of Black Journalists for her full-length feature story on domestic violence amongst young urban women, titled “Killing Me Softly,” and, thanks to the popularity of her column, ultimately became the face of HONEY magazine.

Adding to her accomplishments are Miller’s consecutive book deals. The first book, The Angry Black Woman’s Guide to Life (Plume/Dutton) was released in April 2004 to rave reviews in The New York Times, Boston Globe and Newsweek. Her second book, The Vow (Harper Collins) was released in October 2005 and also met with outstanding reviews in The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Essence, and Glamour, was excerpted in the March 2006 issue of Cosmopolitan, and earned a coveted spot on the Essence Bestseller List. Most recently, Ms. Miller signed a three-book deal with Scholastic Inc., which will publish Hotlanta, one of the few African American teen series’ on the market, in April of 2008.

When not pursuing writing and television opportunities, Miller sits on the media council for the youth empowerment non-profit, Black Girls Rock, Inc. She also performed in the 2006 annual benefit production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning stage play, The Vagina Monologue at the Apollo Theater.
