"Rick on the Records Review"

Broad Ripple Gazette Review!!!!

Rick on the records section:

Article by: Rick Zeigler

Formed in December 2007, Indiana’s Matt Mitchell Project (MMP) has just released its first album. Simply put, if you like the melodic rock with its roots in American power-pop (Raspberries, Big Star, Cheap Trick) as well as English “guitar bands” (Beatles, Oasis, et al), then you owe yourself a listen. Without a duff song over its 10 tracks, MMP prove themselves a band to watch with this self-titled debut. Each tune is built on straightforward drum beats (both live and programmed), sturdy bass lines, loads of strummed acoustics and tastefully picked electrics, light keyboard/synth shadings, and most crucially, superb and memorable melodies. Simple in concept, but very difficult to pull off with any consistency (especially when it comes to melodies), MMP has no problem drilling their catchy songs into your head over the course of its 40+ minutes. Opener “Back To Me” sets the template, with its stately (programmed) beat, layers of acoustics, and keyboard colorings backing up an Oasis-worthy melody. From this point on, the songs show their American (rather than English) roots, as “Glad You’re Gone” uses crunchy power chords, an organ-led middle eight, and a tasty concise guitar solo to conjure up memories of the Raspberries and the cohorts. “Top Of The World” employs a gorgeous chorus to go along with its chiming electric guitar work. “Keep You Head” sounds like a radio-ready rocker, while change-ups are thrown with “If You Leave Me” and “The End,” as they employ just Mitchell singing over his acoustic, with the former adding in some nice piano in the background, while the latter gains texture with the addition of a violin. “Life In Stereo” also throws a curve with its dancey beat and spoke-sung verse. The songs alternate between melancholy reflections and more hard-charging declarations, but whatever the approach, melody take the day. And it should also be noted the production, courtesy of the local boys at Azmyth Studios, is superb. With this debut, Matt Mitchell Project has put its forward as a band to watch. - Broad Ripple Gazette

"Band Spotlight"

What began as an intersection of hip hop devotion and guitar rock fascination in 2007 has gradually morphed into alternative rock’s freshest generation of a souped up classic sound. The Matt Mitchell Project boasts local appearances at Birdy’s Bar and Grill (71st & Keystone) and Brandon’s Pub (Southport & Five Points Rd) as well as playing notable venues such as The Vogue and Eight Seconds Saloon as recently as the summer of 2009. Of late, MMP is proud to have played on the Ramp Stage at September’s Oranje Art & Music Festival.

Co-founder Travis Kold gives a little insight on the genetics of their music and other MMP tidbits.

In one sentence, how would you describe the Matt Mitchell sound?

The Matt Mitchell Project sounds like Oasis meets Tom Petty and hangs out with OutKast.

What projects, events, and goals are on your plate right now?

We just finished our debut album, so right now we are trying to play shows and push our album to get the Matt Mitchell Project fan base built up.

What makes a stop at Indy CD & Vinyl for your set during the Broad Ripple Music Festival worth while?

Indy CD & Vinyl has been a great outlet for local, up-and-coming music and it’s a great honor to play there and build a strong relationship with such a respected establishment.

Finally, to gain insight into your personal music taste, what was the best concert/show you have recently attended? Album purchased?

Recently saw The Wallflowers in Louisville, KY. Great show. Those guys still sound great.

I just downloaded two songs off I-tunes by another local Indy up and comer named John Overton….hip hop tunes….great sound! - ZapTownMag

Bio

The following is the story of the Matt Mitchell Project. While the stories you are about to hear are true, the characters have been changed to protect their anonymity.

The Matt Mitchell Project was started on a cold December day in 2007, when Travis Kold Kut Moore talked Matt Mitchell into grabbing his guitar and accompanying him on a trip to Azmyth recording studio, where by chance Travis had just started working at. After a brief tour of the studio, Travis and Matt began to discuss their musical influences and backgrounds. Travis was fan to the hip hop and rap scene while Matt was more into the British guitar band sound and older music. Travis and Matt decided it would be fun to combine their influences and try to create a sound that had not yet been heard by human ears. Hip Hop beats and keyboards mixed with strumming guitars and heartfelt vocals. Out of this Back to Me was created. A smooth, guitar strummed melody with hip hop beats and a grizzly organ sound that only took about two hours to create. After letting a select few family members and friends hear this new creation, Travis and Matt decided it was their responsibility to forge onward and create an entire album of music for all to enjoy. Thus the Matt Mitchell Project was born. With this birth a creative monster was hatched and within four months, Life in Stereo and This Town were created. Before Travis and Matt could move on to new songs, Life in Stereo was picked by a record label out of South Africa, Stereo FX, to be remixed and have this newly remixed version and the original version released on their label. Life in Stereo was released for digital distribution on September 30th, 2008 on nearly 400 international distribution sites.

Wondering what was taking place in his studio at night, Azmyth owner Ryan Adkins decided he wanted to get in on the hot sounds and play bass for the group thus making the duo now a trio. Ryans golden ear and rolling bass line was an excellent addition to the group and they continued to create new sounds and songs for what is to be their first self titled studio album. Along the way there have been more songs created and two new members have been added, David Glenn on lead guitar and Micah Beckwith on drums, to make the Matt Mitchell Project a full band. In the time since December 2007 the Matt Mitchell Project has been playing live shows around the Midwest, building a solid fan base, and continuing to work for the release of their album due out on September 15, 2009
