"Review: Mo' Blues - Combustión Espontánea"

Mo' Blues is back with their third CD; this one done totally in Spanish, and though, you may not understand all the words, the feeling is still there. It is a combination of their combined talents in song writing and musicianship, showcasing their skills as Blues artists of a newer age and in another language than that of what we are accustomed. Nonetheless, it deserves a good listen to appreciate their music.
The songs are written by Federico Teiler, Sebastian Casis and Gabriel de Pedro. Federico Teiler is on guitar casting his spell with his smooth licks and sultry voice. Gabriel de Pedro, on piano and organ, also does some vocals. Gabriel also plays an accordion; an instrument that you may not relate to Blues, but pulls it off well. Sebastian Casis, on bass, plugs in his high energy level to pull you into his trance. And, Ruben Tissembaum, on drums, pulls this all together with his strong back beat. These guys are strong, seasoned musicians, who show that Blues is a feeling, and can be felt and broadcasted in any language. Featured on this CD is also, Sebastian's brother, Pedro Casis on trumpet, and friend, Victor Malvicino on tenor saxophone. These two have been doing some traveling with the original guys on some of their tours in South America. Also appearing on this CD are Luis Robinson on harmonica, Diego Mizrahi on guitar, Luis "Turco" Jozami on slide guitar and Marcelo Acosta on percussion. The CD was produced by Mo' Blues with the assistance of Adrian Forni and Horacio Bidarra. Please take the time to check out their website at moblues.com.ar. And look for them at the 2nd Annual Magic City Blues Fest on September 3, 2006 at Linn Park in Birmingham.

"MO' BLUES - Combustión Espontánea"

Blues Matters! bring you the Blues from round the world, and to prove it, here is a release from an Argentinian band based in the States. A 14 track, self-produced album, recorded entirely in Spanish! So where do you start to review it? A four-piece band that formed in Argentina in 1998, with 5 albums to their credit since 2000, they seem to travel the US festival circuit and their musical pedigrees are impeccable, most of them having played since they were children. If you can't understand the lyrics, you are only left with the music, and i am bound to say that it is well nigh faultless. Strat-manglers are going to love it, as the lead guitar work is to die for, with gorgeous tone and a lot of feel. The bass work too is outstanding, as are the piano and drums; in fact, everything that they do is played with supreme style and taste, as well as energy. Several of the tracks have the addition of trumpet and tenor sax and they fill out the sound, bringing an added level of excitement to the music. The vocals sound a little strained, but they may well be because of trying to fit Spanish to Blues lyrics. All in all a high quality, well produced production that makes me want to hear them in English.

Bio

MO' BLUES formed in Santa Fe, Argentina in 1999.
A wonderful mix of English and Spanish lyrics gives them pride in their distinctive sounds as an exciting South American Blues Band. They pull in an audience while “teaching” some songs to the listeners in Spanish.
This high energy band with the right amount of soft touches combines a mesh of culture resulting in the Mo' Blues unmistakable sound. This sound combines their own local music with the best from American Blues.
“We play as we feel”. “We grew up listening to the great Blues Masters and 70's Rock, but we didn’t know about the special nuances and little stuff that we do differently in our style until we came to the US. People in The United States say we sound different because we incorporate some things from our culture into the American Blues".
