Bio

Modern Republic formed in the summer of 2003 when two friends responded to a “Bass Player Available” ad outside a Coquitlam music store. Singer and guitar-player Ayren Messmer and drummer Matt Seward had been playing together for about a year when they decided it was time to find a permanent third member. Geoff Hague’s bass player ad seemed promising, and sure enough, things have been working out very well for the band ever since.

Ayren, Matt, and Geoff have found that they each come from entirely different musical backgrounds. Moreover, while sharing many of the same influences and musical tastes, they each differ substantially in what they consider to be their “favourite” types of music. Consequently, each of them brings something different to the table, which is a tremendous benefit to the band as a whole.

Their music is a mixture of classic and alternative rock, and is most notable for Ayren’s incredible vocals. A random sampling of their influences would include such bands and singers as The Beatles, Radiohead, U2, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Elvis Costello.

Modern Republic’s recent notable achievements include a performance at Port Moody’s Golden Spike Days (playing on the same stage as Trooper), a showcase spot in New Music West 2004, and wins in a couple significant “battle of the bands”, including a win in the “FanWars #10” competition at The Buffalo Club.

Finally, Modern Republic has recently released their debut album “Video Army”, a six-song EP that showcases their “classic” song writing style and their modern sound and energy.
