Bio

The Modest Cowboy sound is a surprise. The best description was delivered during a radio interview on CFNY when we described the sound as the love child resulting from a union of Buck Owens and David Gilmour. The sound and content is thoughtful, atmospheric and broody with a mildly hypnotic groove best listened to as part of a long, lonesome drive on a foggy night.

The Modest Cowboys themselves are late bloomers. Three of the five full-time members, Gary Martin (bass), David Friend (guitar), and Doug Poad (guitar) are neighbours who live in the Beach area of Toronto within doors of each other. The band was formed in 2006 when music veteran Gary Martin dragged both David & Doug from their basements, and then went on to conscript former workmate Chris Ferguson (drums) to the project.

The sound is at its most complete when the band is joined on stage by Gary's father, Ben Martin, who puts the cowboy into the Modest Cowboys with the vintage and haunting sound of pedal steel.

The motivation for the band is the search for self expression with an age range in the group that stretches from the early thirties to the mid-seventies there's a wealth of collective experience to draw upon, with the song writing taking on a spiritual, thoughtful and interpretive tone.
