"Moesley – I’ll Be Your Freak E.P"

A remarkable independent release from Dublin melodic weird-merchants Moesley.

Those of you looking for a slice of new and exciting music could do a lot worse than picking up a copy of “I’ll Be Your Freak”, the new E.P. from Moesley. Lush atmospherics and a vaguely paranoid and unsettling tone spike their signature laid-back rock/reggae. The Northside noise brigade have had hips swaying and hands clapping at gigs all over Ireland since their inception in 2002, and the E.P. is their first release.

The Moesley sound is rooted in the more raw end of the indie rock spectrum, with the unconventional addition of keyboards and samplers to the regular guitar, bass, and drums. Check out the delightfully creepy Baby Spiders with its melody from nightmare land, or the Beatles-esque sing-along Just A Little with its haunting ethereal intro. The lyrical content throughout also displays maturity and genuine depth, as well as a heavy dash of the insane. Don’t expect to hear any “woe is me” fodder here as vocalist Glenn Cullen explores everything from the darker sides of love on I’m Yours (“If think you need me/I’ll be your freak”), to the – ahem – scary world of Baby Spiders (“They were on Jay Leno/Eating his chin!”).

The group’s off-kilter tunes wont appeal to everyone, and sometimes the sheer juxtaposition of moods on the E.P. can be a little jarring. Repeat listens, however, prove to be rewarding, and everything soon falls into place. It truly is a rarity to stumble along an original piece of music in the day and age of retro rock and trend-core emo, but I’ll Be Your Freak encompasses all that is missing in the Irish music scene today. From the twisted fairytale chimes of Baby Spiders, to the final raunchy choruses of I Want To See You Naked, the disc is a dose of pure musical pleasure.

Bio

Welcome to the politely creepy world of Moesley. In an industry where the phrase “sounds like…” precedes the description of any band, Moesley are a musical anomaly with a true sound of their own.

The single “All That’s Left” is the latest effort from the off-kilter Dublin group, with a full scale independent release on the cards for September 29th 2006. Without a management team or even a booking agent Moesley have secured gigs in some of Irelands top venues and have been regulars on local and commercial radio stations. They have also recorded a video with Torn Pictures Production Company to be released along with the single.

When asked, the band will cite a list of influences from Pink Floyd and Radiohead to Bob Marley and Aphex Twin, but none of these influences are overtly worn on their collective sleeve. Instead, haunting, visceral, honest and beautiful songs are at the forefront of their sonic assault, and over-the-top posturing takes a back seat to solid musicianship and songwriting.

Moesley was born in 2002 when brothers Colm, Eoin and Glenn Cullen began jamming in their bedroom with friends Dave Murray and Paul O’Brien. Moesley are a breath of fresh air in an often stale and stagnant Irish scene. The music is rooted in rock, funk, reggae and pop, but the overall sound is uniquely theirs. From the freaky stomp of Baby Spiders to the sexually charged I Want To See You Naked, the music is schizophrenically innovative and varied, but it is always fun.

Their debut E.P. I’ll Be Your Freak was released in 2005, and has received heavy praise from its listeners. Many of the tracks have featured on the top 10 downloads list from mp3 download site CPU.ie (with over 7000 downloads), and the E.P. earned them a slot on The Compilation Returns: The Best of Irish Unsigned, a collection gathering the cream of the crop of Irish Unsigned acts. In addition to their recording endeavours, the quartet have honed a high-energy live set over the last four years that has earned them a dedicated following. Moesley have gigged extensively both inside and outside the Pale, and among their many high profile support gigs, the band has played their own headline slots at Temple Bar Music Centre , Whelans, The Hub, Fibber Magees, U.C.D and headlined PaulAid a charity Concert held in Barcode (Clontarf) that raised over 10,000 euro for overseas aid.

The single “All That’s Left” is the latest effort from the off-kilter Dublin group, and features a video shot by Torn Pictures Production Company. It is being independently released, and will be available at Record stores Nationwide.
