- musicinafrica

City Guide: Moh Dediouf's Guide to Dakar
The highly-buzzing Senegalese artist Moh Dediouf gives us the keys to his home of Dakar.
DIASPORA—In our series City Guide, we ask our favorite musicians, actors, artists and celebrities what their go-to spots are in their hometown.

In this latest installment, the highly-buzzing Senegalese artist Moh Dediouf, who blends national and West African influences with electronic-house music, gives us the keys to his home of Dakar, showing us the best spots for tunes, romance, food and more.

Get a taste of what the city has to offer with Moh Dediouf's guide to Dakar below.

Favorite music venue

Well, in Dakar, there are many different places where I really love to hangout. Bazoff and Charlys Bar are two of them. I like the eclectic vibe there.

Favorite nightspot

The Almadies side of the city has the best clubs to party in. At the Kool Grawoul party you'll experience a unique fusion of Dakar youth's energy and the afro-electro scene, all while facing the beach.

Best place to get a drink

At the Hotel Sokhamon and Les Phare des Mamelles, where you'll breath the beauty of Dakar.

Best restaurant
The fashionable L'Amiral, just behind the Léopold Sedar Senghor Stadium. I love their food, it's a mix of home food experience, plus offers a bit of privacy. The chefs are super talented.

Best spot to take a date

The beach is a lovely place, even if I've never been there for a date myself. It's a sweet, cozy place.

Best outdoor activity

One of my favorite activities is swinging between the baobab trees at The Baobab Forest, an hour away from Dakar. I feel totally liberated there. I either use my motorbike or bicycle... I really need that fresh energy. I talking about it in my song, "Pia."

Best place to write music
Outside with people. I love to be connected with the heart of my people—from Guédiawaye to Pikine, from Colobane to Ouakam. I love interactions that give me rhythms, the smiles that keep me hoping, and the spirit of creativity that hard workers and 'simple' hustlers have. I need that diversity. It melts my heart. That's how I've built up my three albums, called Trilogy.

Place to go for inspiration

I generally get out of Dakar and go around Joal, a small fisherman's village that has the only cemetery where Muslims and Christian rest together. I like the humanism and the complexity of Joal, it reminds me of what love is supposed to be.

Best beach

A post shared by Everyday Africa (@everydayafrica) on May 28, 2016 at 5:05am PDT

The Ngor Island beach is the best beach for me.

Any other locations you'd like to highlight?
We're starting to have a young, electronic scene here in Dakar with Tchoub Tchoub, Electrafrique, Ibaaku, and DJ Dollars. Dakar's afro-house project is part of that afro electro scene's energy, a fusion of our roots and modern music: hip-hop, mbalax, salsa reggae, and more. So I like to feel what's going on and what's hot in different places.

I'm in love with the Dakar suburbs of Guediawaye, Parcelles Assainies, and Pikine because of their fighting spirit and the social cohesion you find tehre. I really hope that the new city of Diamniadio that we're building keeps this identity of us, based on solidarity. - okayafrica

"Senegalese musical prodigy Moh Dediouf"

Multi talented world music singer, composer and song writer, Moh Dediouf’s sound is as vibrant and eclectic as the continent he is from. Born in Dakar Senegal in 1974, with a musical gift so profound, he now uses it to unite Africa and to make the world change their minds about what is perceived as the ‘Dark Continent.’
He is anchored to Africa, yet draws on his travels and life experiences from Europe and other parts of the world to mould, mix and make music that the whole world can dance to. His mission - to create music that no ear has ever heard.

Be it his humble beginnings, his bold ambition, his warm smile or his musical expertise – Moh Dediouf stands out from the rest. His debut, self-produced album, released in 2007, has already gained recognition. Moh is the first French artist to win the First Prize in the World Music Category at the International Song writing Competition. His song Adouna was chosen among more than 15 000 tracks from over 100 countries. Moh also formed part of the history created on African soil with the first ever World Cup hosting, by being the only French artist to be featured on the 2010 official World Cup Compilation Hello Afrika, with the song titled Africaaa. The lyrics, which are both in Wolof and English, resemble a melting pot of energy, diversity and a culture rich Africa.

“My music is about freedom. I sing with freedom. I have no limits and am influenced by life’s daily sights and sounds. There are no boundaries when you’re speaking a universal language, and through my music, I know the world will change, Africa will change, I know I will change.” Says Moh

Through his next release ‘Smile A Way of Life’, he wants followers not only to engage in his musical gift but to reach out and join hands in the plight to enrich Africa by supporting various projects and NGO’s.

“The World Cup has come and gone and for a long time, people are going to be looking at Africa, perhaps not always for the good. I am the start of a chain reaction and we need the links in order to polish Africa and make her shine.”

Moh hopes that through ‘Smile A Way of Life’ he’ll create a magical montage of like minded individuals who want to see Africa blossom.

“This is the start! My hope is to make this chain so strong, that the legacy will go on, beyond my second album. The giving does not stop after that, but will have a domino effect. Moh’s Montage will be contagious.” Moh said.

It seems that with his vibrancy and sheer energy and will to dream, soon Moh will have us all singing to the same tune.

De Diouf "In The Shade" Noter:
Vote..

- Musicinafrica

Bio

Singer-Writer-Composer De Diouf :
De Diouf's music beats to the world's rhythm, it beats to the rhythm of a journey nurtured by encounter and by the quest for new horizons. The artist's music took its source about thirty years ago in Senegal, in a household where traditional African rhythms and the musical dazzles of Marvin Gaye and James Brown intermingled in mislaid vinyls. From this combo an undeniable creative passion was to be birthed. De Diouf's music finds its roots in Africa and expands and nourishes itself from the most remote musical currents. It is a symbol of the movement African Artists For the Next Generation. Fascinatingly, the artist colors Jazz with African singing, his melodies inspired by his Serere roots seduce the soul and he converts house music to ethnorock.
