"Molly Burch Debuts Her Excellently Retro First Single "Downhearted""

Molly Burch's voice is a time capsule. The Austin-based singer-songwriter and Captured Tracks's latest signee takes cues from old timers like Dusty Springfield and Patsy Cline to create throaty mountains and valleys of sound. It's retro country and soul in the best way.
Today Burch is sharing her very first single, "Downhearted," an irresistibly melancholy song with clean, twangy hooks. Burch expands the sound on her refrain, You got me/ so downhearted, flaunting what her voice can do, stretching her vowels as she's echoed by wisps of backing vocals. - Fader

"Molly Burch 5/19/2016"

Austin-based Molly Burch paints pictures of a simpler time, back when sodas were called pops, hairs were in bobs, and people danced at hops. Her band pulses with sentimental grooves inspired from 1950-60s pop, soul, surf & country, while she breathes new life into the genre with a clever crafting of words and a reverberated layering of her 5-piece band. With a sound reminiscent of Dolly Parton, Lana Del Rey and the Beach Boys, it’s understandable that her live performances command attention from her audiences. - KUTX

"Austin Singer-Songwriter Releases New Album Inspired by Patsy Cline"

Writer Lyndsay Knecht introduces us to Molly Burch, a breakout singer-songwriter from Austin who’s earning comparisons to retro-revivalist Angel Olsen and Patsy Cline. Patsy Cline gets a lot of credit – It’s not as if she doesn’t deserve it,” she says. “The wistful queen of early 60s Nashville – and, later, the confessional ballad – is held close as an inspiration by so many young singer-songwriters for her articulation of feeling. Austin’s Molly Burch is one of those young singer-songwriters. There’s something about an exciting new female voice that dips so blatantly into an expressive history, that makes me savor all these voices again, all carrying a certain breakable thing we can trust them to carry,” she says. “I hear Ella Fitzgerald, the greatest singer of all time, who took stages and made eyes water before Cline did – and, of course, I hear Judy Garland, whose range communicates a longing just as enormous. - Texas Standard

"October Playlist"

As we said in our Recommended Albums write-up for September, it’s been quite a spectacular month for new releases, and this is most definitely reflected in our October Playlist. It includes new tracks from Francis and the Lights, Mick Jenkins, Solange, Nicolas Jaar and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - as well as two tracks apiece from Frank Ocean’s magnificent album Blonde and Bon Iver’s spectacular album 22, A Million.

There’s also room for new music from the likes of Hush Moss, Powell, Danny Brown, Smerz, Weyes Blood, Molly Burch, Alex Izenberg, Lully and Vesuvio Solo. - HUH Magazine (UK)

"TIDAL Rising: This Week's 5 Artists to Watch"

Following in the aesthetic footsteps of Dusty Springfield and Patsy Cline, Molly Burch is an American singer-songwriter whose sound sports the sort of melancholic, down-and-out twang so often associated with the best of the old school country’s more emotionally affecting offerings. That much is perfectly manifested on “Downhearted,” an excellent, somber and smoky single that marks Burch’s latest offering. - TIDAL

"TIDAL Rising: Molly Burch"

Originally hailing from Los Angeles, California, Molly Burch is an undeniable talent on the rise.

Following in the aesthetic footsteps of Dusty Springfield and Patsy Cline, the singer-songwriter relocated from L.A. to Asheville, NC, before settling in her current base of Austin.

You can hear each of those places in her wistful sound, which sports the sort of melancholic, down-and-out twang so often associated with the best of the old school country’s more emotionally affecting offerings. That much is perfectly manifested on the somber and smoky A/B singles “Downhearted” and “I Adore You,” her debut releases on the venerable indie label Captured Tracks. - TIDAL

"Molly Burch "Try""

To hype Please Be Mine, her debut album on Captured Tracks, Austin transplant Molly Burch has released “Try,” a spacious and sweet throwback number. With a doo-wop chord progression and just the right amount of reverb, Burch channels the bygone era of club crooners, all while incorporating fairly unconventional drums (at least unconventional by smoky bar music standards). In accordance with the album title, Burch sings of being on the wrong end of unrequited love; “I wish you would try” is the apt chorus of this loner anthem that hits all the right notes. - Stereogum
