"Editor's Pick"

"Perhaps these guys do take Mondays off, but here's guessing they're booked solid the rest of the week. The Wilmington, N.C. jazz collective has been earning a strong reputation in their hometown and beyond for a style that blends squealing bluesy sax, hard funk, and playful Scofieldian drum-and-guitar meanderings."

Bio

Beginning as a groove/rock trio, Mondays Off quickly gained attention as a premiere instrumental group in Wilmington, NC. With the addition of jazz major Chicago Cosgrove on sax in the summer of 2005, the slow but steady movement toward a new sound was set in to motion. The quartet played regionally, opening for acts such as SeepeopleS, Bellyfull, Cerulean City....as well as getting invovled in festivals such as The Fall and Homegrown Music Network's 10 Year Anniversary Festival. In January of 2006, guitarist Kevin Butler had to leave the band for family-related reasons. Forced to decide the future of the project, Xander and Chicago decided to hunt down fellow music major Justin Hoke. As a double major in Jazz and Classical guitar, Justin was thankfully excited to fit in the M.O. show schedule with all of his other commitments. His group at the time, Pocket Language, was fading out and the opportunity for another addition presented itself in their drummer at the time, Ryan Saranich. A music guru from high school, with skills that amaze on drumkit, saxophones, bass, keys, and composition to boot - we were all excited when he approached the band before we could get to him. On his first set with Mondays Off, we recorded the live show "Smokey Session" - Live at Smokey Joe's Cafe in Charlotte, NC. Since that time, multiple recordings have made their way in to the hands of frenzied fans, crazed over the new sound. We look forward to the coming flood of Mondays Off on the scene, you should prepare....
