"Music Feature Of The Week"

I am a fan and will always be a supporter of local music. However that doesn’t negate the fact that I consider myself at times to be a pretty harsh music critic. It’s easy to say the artist would have to make a huge impression on me in order for me to jump on board 100%.

When I come across an artist who I will blindly stand next to it is a definite rare occasion. It just doesn’t happen very often. So I was a little taken back when I heard music from local rappers DeNero and Nilo Stari.

Immediately I felt these two had that certain “it” factor that is necessary in making it as a professional musician.

I could not help but think that the two reminded me of one of my favorite duos from the 90's Lord Tariq and Peter Guns. They were two rappers with each their own style that complimented the other.

Before you all go on to slaughter me on my comments by saying that DeNero and Nilo Stari sound nothing like Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz, realize I never said that they did. I said that they reminded me of them.

Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz could have gone on to have long successful careers, but for whatever reasons went on their separate ways after only one successful commercial LP.

DeNero and Nilo Stari claim they met in a 10th grade history class where they began their friendship cheating off each other’s school papers.

Stari (age 20) and DeNero (age 21) have moved on to be entrepreneur aspect of the music business and started their own independent record label deemed “Money Magnet Mafia”. The two also operate “Money Magnet Mafia & Acclaimed 2 Fame Studios” in the Downtown/Westside area. They are also in development of their own clothing line, merchandise, and print services as well.

More recently they’ve inked up with one of the biggest sought after local artist in the city of San Antonio, “Question” . Nilo Stari and DeNero were invited as last minute guest and asked to appear on Question’s latest Album “XANAX3? along with more well known names such as Talib Kweli, Bun B, Trey Songz, B.O.B. and others.

The song that made the “Xanax 3? LP is known as “Planets” A song that was not scheduled to be on the album. However when the song was created between the three scribes, the vibe fit the album like a puzzle piece and was later added by Question himself. All three and their respected teams are in the making of an insane music video equipped with fresh, original ideas with a crisp, clean HD quality (teasers can be found on

With the video on the way and the ball finally rolling, they also have plenty of upcoming projects to anticipate. DeNero has just released a project known as “Tha Family Guy Mixtape” mixed by Chamillionaire’s own official DJ, DJ Rapid Ric. Which includes an extremely original collectible set of artwork for the fans to enjoy masterminded by DeNero himself and brought to life by none other than 3x Justo Awards winner Miami Kaos.(Teaser video can be found on The mixtape is now available locally and internationally upon request at

Other projects coming soon also include a collaboration of Nilo and DeNero called “The Invasion” that includes a handful of local artist as well as two original albums. The first is entitled “A Breath of Fresh Air” produced by local super producer DJ Doomzday and another that has yet to be named. However it will definitely be one of their biggest projects ever.

This is the perfect opportunity for these young rappers to be discovered in a city that is not considered “on the map” when it comes to mainstream music. I urge everyone to give them and their music a shot. I did, and at the end of it all I emerged a fan. - Dominique Garcia

Money Magnet Mafia was created in early 2006 by New Mexico born, Texas raised MC/artist Cody "DeNero" Bell (23) who was 17 at the time and looking to build a solid foundation in which he could solidify his rap career. Being young and having bounced around to a few different groups over time due to politcs and other dilemnas, he decided to create his own label in order to go his own direction with his music and give other artists like himself the creative freedom and stress free enviornment that most seek. Like alot of young artists coming up DeNero felt like he was being takin advantage of and began his own path. On that journey he met the LA born, Texas raised rapper and now Co-Ceo of Money Magnet Mafia Kamron "Nilo Stari" Nairne (22) in history class at MacArthur High School in San Antonio, TX. They immediately recognized each others drive and passion for music and began exchanging ryhmes and ideas during class, but the writing, collaborating on a daily basis and building their own studio didnt just last while attending high school, it became a lifestyle. Both coming from a strong background of strictly classic hip hop and R&B influence from the 90's and the early 2000 era ranging from artists like Biggie & TuPac to groups such as Outkast & UGK to 60's through 2000 era R&B artists like The Isley Brothers & Al Greene to Anthony Hamilton & many more the two felt they had no choice but to carry on a tradition of soul baring, heart felt music from the gut. Bottom line, these two on a track not only compliment each other but fit together like gun and magazine. With a mix of smooth, timeless hooks that will leave you singing them for days to their finely polished, well rounded, jewel-like verses these two are without a doubt diamonds in the rough who have yet to be discovered. Over the last couple of years they've spent countless hours recording and sitting behind the boards in a dim lit studio perfecting their craft all the while building the necessary team to expand their vision from there long time friend and still photo/visual partner Zach (@camerazach) Villafana (20) to in-house producers such as James "JSplenda" Martinez (25), Ben "Benni5Stax" Fontenot (19) and many more. What I've found that sets this group of individuals apart is that you'd think from the quality of their music, photos, video and merchandise that they have some sort of financial backing or managment but thats not the case. These young men are all 25 & under, live together under one roof and completely fund their own endevours to insure that their creative freedom and vision is not distorted or compromised due to the business side of the industry. You are looking at a truly self functioning unit of an indie label with no dependablity on anybody but their own dedication, drive and ingenuity. Money Magnet Mafia is not just a trend or label, its a movement and a family.
