FC VICTORIA ALUMNUS ROCKS WITH DEBUT CD
It was not that long ago it seems when Monica Rossa trained and performed with FC Victoria's Summer Teams. She was all smiles then and she's beaming now as the newest Indie Rocker on the scene. Her debut CD, appropriately named Monica Rossa has just been released.

Cdcover_2 "I've grown up and now officially hooked on caffeine", writes the rocker. She thanks God, her family and her professional partners as she words it, "None of this would be possible without you talented people guiding me through as I blindly stumbled through each obstacle".

The soccer playin' musician, singer, songwriter teamed up with local rocker, Matthew James who produced the twelve track offering recorded at The Audio Garage on Discovery Street.

Sample tracks, video, a bio and photo's of Monica can be found on the Sonic Bids website. You can purchase her CD directly too. Click here to email the Rossa's. They will be delighted to hear from you.

Her vocal range is amazing. Rock-it to the top Monica. We're all cheering for you.

"Soloists Take To The Stage"

Soloists Take to the Stage

May 4, 2007

Although they were missing a soloist due to a rugby injury, the Senior School Orchestra was far from lacking in talented musicians for Monday night’s concert at the University of Victoria’s Farquhar Auditorium. Accompanied by the Senior School Orchestra, the six soloists all demonstrated mastery of their instruments with skilled and passionate playing.

Allen Hsu was the first of the soloists. He raised the bar for the following musicians with his brilliant violin piece. Monica Rossa followed with her rendition of the “Laughing Song” from Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss and amazed everyone with her powerful soprano voice, especially at the end of the song when she hit some very high notes with ease. Samantha Lee followed as the first of three piano soloists that included Justin Ko and Benjamin Kwok. Valerie Taylor took to the stage with her flute, the lone band instrument included in the solos, and played a short, beautiful Vivaldi concerto.

Conductor Donna Williams says she “felt really proud to be in front of such a tremendous ensemble. The soloists without exception were magnificent.” The audience certainly agreed as they congratulated the orchestra and soloists with a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause.

If you missed this concert, be sure to check out the forthcoming music events SMUS has to offer:

"Grade 11 Student Sings Her Way To The Top"

Grade 11 Student Sings her Way to the Top

January 18, 2008

Grade 11 student Monica Rossa will perform in this Saturday’s Victoria Idol contest for a chance to win recording time in a professional studio – a prize worth $5,000 dollars.

Monica is one of 12 finalists in the local singing competition, and one of the youngest contestants performing. But she’s not intimidated by her older and more experienced competitors. “Just knowing that I'm competing with the best, regardless of age is good enough for me,” she says.

Victoria Idol’s panel of music experts judged hundreds of performers before selecting 48 contestants to put through a series of competitive performances. The 48 contestants were divided into groups and competed at venues around the region. Winners from those rounds went on to the semi-finals in November and finally 12 contestants were selected to compete in Saturday night’s finale at the Alix Goolden Hall.

Despite her young age, this is not the first time Monica has participated in the Victoria Idol contest. Her first stint was in 2006 and her performance was impressive enough to garner attention from people who are now helping her with her debut pop album, which will be released in a month.

“Hopefully this album will give me a foot in the door of the music industry,” Monica says.
Appreciative of the support she has received from SMUS, Monica says, “it’s nice to know the school is behind me.” - SMUS week in Review
