Whispers of the sea

Biography

Welcome to the world of Monica Shannon.

I have been singing and writing songs for more than ten years. When I was 12, I started playing piano and noting my first inspirations. I had a great teacher, Mr Aldo Garavini, musician at “La Scala Orchestra” in Milan. He introduced me to the magic music world of Prokofiev, Bela Bartok, Debussy; he taught me how poetry inspires music and vice versa. I remember that when I played the piano, he used to read a poem and, during one of those sessions, I got to know Dylan Thomas and Octavio Paz as well...unforgettable lessons!

Then, when I was 17, I started singing and, at the same time, I wrote my first soundtrack for a comedy in my home town theatre, “La Verita' di Mezzanotte” (Midnight Truth). In order to improve my vocal technique, I took jazz style classes with a famous singer, Tiziana Ghiglioni. During that period I was invited to be the lead vocalist of a jazz-swing band performing standards in pubs and theatres.

I have always been looking for my innermost artistic direction and I thought that travelling was the right way to start and open my mind towards different cultures and music styles. The place where I started this adventure is Ireland. A lot of songs of mine are actually inspired by traditional celtic music and then arranged in a modern key.

An increasing collaboration with other artists has also improved my creativity. First of all, with my previous band, the “Diadema”, I produced a quality demo of my repertoire and most successful concerts. Later, thank to the support of two talented songwriters and producers, Riccardo Prestianni and Sebastiano Barbagallo, I had the opportunity to re-arrange some of my best songs. Together with them, I recorded two of these songs at Fragile Studio - Lodi, with the great collaboration of the sound engineer Bobby Boughton (Lisa Stansfield).

After various journeys, I am now getting into humanitarian causes. Being a passionate ocean lover, I am totally against the hunting of whales and I think that the way these gentle giants are killed is absolutely appalling. For this reason I decided to become a Greenpeace Ocean Defender. Then, thank to one of my best friends, who visited Laos for a long time, I got to know another important battle against unexploded landmines. I will do my best to support these causes through my music, the aim of which is to convey all my feelings, sensations and emotions and listeners’ feedback will complete the dialog.

I have recently produced my first album “Beyond 9”: an album which includes 9 songs, 5 written by me and 4 in collaboration with Riccardo Prestianni. It was arranged and recorded in Italy but mastered in New York. "Beyond 9" collaborations: Stefano Pulga "The Shadows among the Trees", Valerio Vado (Reverie) "My Sheltering Sky", Claudio Borroni mix, Bill Jacobs - Sonikwheel Productions New York master, Mariangela Zabatino artwork. The album is available from CD Baby and Apple iTunes and has already received some very good feedback from listeners.
Important web sites like Ethereal Voices (Florida), IMIsound and Lineamusica (Italy) have shown their appreciation for my music and offered me a free promotional page.
I have been invited by a Swiss radio station, Radio 3iii, to be their artist of the week, presenting my music and my first album. Other radio stations from the US, Europe and Australia added my album to their playlists.
My song “I’m Aware” has been selected for the Global Rhythm January-February CD compilation that will be distributed in the US, Spain, France and Italy, together with the magazine.
Moreover, last year, after my album release, I started performing with my wonderful ensemble.

Lyrics

I'm Aware

Written By: Monica Shannon

I’m aware that this complex task is needed to not be lonely
I’m aware that it’s not a 9-5 job and I’ll be dedicated to

You can think that, you can say that I am fool but I am sure
You can take away my hand from there but my heart speaks louder

I’m aware that I’ll have to forget western amenities
I’m aware of the fact that my family won’t be my first priority

You can try to organize my mind, I am fool as you are blind
You can show me your guarantees, what does it mean? What do we mean?

Oh, oh, oh, don’t want to be lonely
Oh, oh, oh, don’t want to be lonely

I’m aware that I might encounter diseases and loneliness
I’m aware that I’ll have to face shocking experiences

You can say that I will tumble, blow out the candle to not see
You can take me away from there but I’ll fly higher

Oh, oh, oh, don’t want to be lonely
Oh, oh, oh, don’t want to be lonely

Soul Portrait

Written By: Monica Shannon

I cannot stop the rain
I cannot fit the pain
Don’t stop me right now
If it’s a rolling world
Why we move so slow
Don’t stop me right now

Cause I want to live what you live
And I want you live what I live

And I want to live what you live
Take me there, by your side
And I want you live what I live tonight
Shake my time give me a dance through the moonlight
Cause I want to live what you live tonight
And I want you live what I live

I cannot restrain the blaze
I cannot wear a veil
Don’t stop me right now
If there’s nothing more to achieve
Why we cannot sleep
Don’t stop me right now

Cause I want to feel what you feel
And I want you feel what I feel

And I want to feel what you feel
Take me there by your side
And I want you feel what I feel tonight
Shake my time, give me a dance through the moonlight
Cause I want to feel what you feel tonight
And I want you feel what I feel

Baby, time is now, time is now...

Cause I want to live what you live
Save my time, give me a dance through the moonlight
Cause I want to live what you live tonight
Baby I want you live what I live tonight
Cause I want to live what you live...

Infinita Infinita'

Written By: Monica Shannon

E l’anima
Sa dove vola il tempo
In un attimo di sgomento
E' un volo a perdifiato
Dove sei stato?
Un sogno accarezzato
Filtrato dal mio inconscio
Nell’acqua che silenzio infonde
Conto le onde

Ahi, ahi, ahi, ah
Ohi, ohi, ohi, oh
Infinita Infinita'

Ahi, ahi, ahi, ah
Ohi, ohi, ohi, oh
Infinita Infinita'

E' l’anima…

The Island

Written By: Monica Shannon

Take me there, silent along the cliff, where the blue sky circles the headland
Let me seat, silent along the rocks, where the blue sky seems so close to me
I look up, I look around, a bird that disappears
A ray of light reflects the sea, tinting the waves of blue and green

Loneliness was a long time ago
Feel the moment and I won’t be alone
Feel the moment and all I see, you are the earth under my feet
Hear you say “I’ll be there for you, loneliness is far away from here”

Keep me afloat, hanging in the air, breathing the sea in every molecule
Join my hand when I walk through your face, there’s no reason to be afraid
I look up, I look around, the sunset in my eyes
Make me smile, under this endless sky while I wish upon a star

Loneliness was a long time ago
Feel the moment and I won’t be alone
Feel the moment and all I see, you are the earth under my feet
Hear you say “I’ll be there for you..."

Loneliness was a long time ago
Feel the moment and I won’t be alone
Feel the moment and all I see, you are the earth under my feet
Hear you say “I’ll be there for you, loneliness is far away from here"

Up and Down

Written By: Monica Shannon

Rest your head on a pillow and so suddenly fly on a bubble,
Look at me, sentinel of the sea.
Navel of the world, when I touch you I cut the rope,
It’s you and me, syllable of the sea.

New-blown love
Excite my sense again...

AWAY...FROM ALL, can you feel the love that crosses your spine tonight?

Dip your feet in my water and so suddenly plunge in the blue,
I am the stream, gentle gift of the sea.
I can bring you among the whales and dandle you on my chasing waves,
You are the tip, sentinel of the sea.

Unmentioned love
I tell of you again!

AWAY...FROM ALL, can you feel the love that crosses your spine tonight?
AWAY...FROM YOU, I still feel your love that crosses my spine tonight.

Where are you now?
Keep my balance between the walls
Where are you now?
Walking down the streets alone
Where are you now?
The passing rain goes by
But can’t erase from me your trace!

Marina's Tale

Written By: Monica Shannon

Under this blue sky you can find your day
And you walk away till the moon appears
And you’re always alone but never really alone
You repay your life through this empty space

On the ocean’s wave through the salty breeze
Where there’s no frontiers and no human sign
You never look back, you forget your old set
You can find your way on this ocean

Aaahia, Aaahia
You are always there and she is a part of you
You will find your way, never been so close

And now take your clothes, all the important things
Steel yourself and save all prayers in the wind
You will be alone but never really alone
You will wait the day that will change your life

Aaahia, Aaahia
You are always there and she is a part of you
You will find your way, never been so close

Aaahia, Aaahia
You are always there and she is a part of you
You will change your way, you will change your life

The Iron Train

Written By: Monica Shannon

I’m 27 years old and running down the street
It’s difficult to be like you
And with my friends I’m going to take the iron train
16 hours away from the ocean
16 hours away from the ocean
16 hours away from the ocean

A single track that marks the sand, no ticket in my hand,
No reason to pretend who I am
Take a seat and look at me, what’s happened today
A stranger who shares our place
16 hours away from the ocean
16 hours away from the ocean

I’m a trader like my friends, you know what I mean
And now in my eyes you can read
Tobacco, spices and what else makes me survive,
This wagon is my only way
16 hours away from the ocean
16 hours away from the ocean

Ehi Ehi Oh Oh, Ehi Ehi Oh Oh...

Through the desert, round trip, three times per week
Tell me d’you like a cup of tea?
You know the night is long and cold but it will warm you through
It’s difficult to be like you

The Shadows among the Trees

Written By: Monica Shannon

Can you see the shadows among the trees?
Can you see the stars of the galaxies?
D’you know on the mountains every flower blooms
If you can see the shadows among the trees

When the morning comes they fade away
And you unaware begin another day
But you will hear the voice of the wind
If you can see the shadows among the trees
If you can see the shadows among the trees

‘Cause every night in every dream
you can sail away, you can sail away
figures begin to play
and you have to pass in
find out the meaning of your being

Can you see the shadows among the trees?
Can you talk with the spirit of the sea?
D’you know on the islands all the children sing
If you can see the shadows among the trees
If you can see the shadows among the trees

‘Cause every night in every dream
you can sail away, you can sail away
figures begin to play
and you have to pass in
find out the meaning of your being

I ask you...can you see the shadows among the trees?

My Sheltering Sky

Written By: Monica Shannon

As a starlight in the morning
As a leaf that abandons the tree in the wind
As a wave between clouds and fields
As the colour of the sky in the twilight
Your eyes are a mirror where
I can see all these things and admire you

You are the beauty and my vibration
Feel like a harp string that aims to play
You are the silence all around
You are the rain and the sun at the same time
Share my harmony with you
Waiting for a new day, a new ray of sun

Because you, you make another day, another night
You, you make another way for me
You belong to me, I belong to you
You my sheltering sky

As a starlight in the morning
As a leaf that abandons the tree in the wind
As a wave between clouds and fields
As the colour of the sky in the twilight
You are the beauty and my vibration
Feel like a harp string that aims to play
You are the silence all around
You are the rain and the sun at the same time

Because you, you make another day, another night
You, you make another way for me
You belong to me, I belong to you
You my sheltering sky
You, you, you, you
Another way for me
You belong to me, I belong to you
You my sheltering sky

Album Story:

I am “9” and you?
You know, behind your birth date there is a number.
If you add all the numbers of your birth date, you will get it!
This special number tells about your general features, interests and dreams.
It is really curious and interesting to compare your number with the one of your parents, partner and friends.
But, for sure, there is something more “beyond that number", that’s your innermost spirit, that’s you!
Now you know the reason why I chose 9 songs for my first album!

I conceived my album thinking about the four elements.

The Island and Up and Down are WATER. They are completely inspired by the sea and its creatures. The Island is dedicated to an enchanting place in Ireland, the Skellig Rocks. Up and Down draws its origin from my love for whales. It has been written during my journey to the Azores Islands, in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean.

Marina’s Tale and Soul Portrait are FIRE. They talk about love at first sight, a strong emotion and a boundless passion. Marina’s Tale is the adventure that my friend experienced in Australia, a marvellous place so faraway from ordinary life. Soul Portrait is a love story, an unmentioned love, representing my best friend’s soul.

The Iron Train, The Shadows among the Trees and I’m Aware are EARTH. They are about important realities and how much it is important to find the meaning of our lives. The Iron Train is the longest train in the world, crossing Mauritania, from the heart of the country to the Atlantic Ocean. It is a goods train, carrying iron ore but people living there, consider it a “hope train”. In fact, they travel through the desert, three times per week, lying on the iron for 16 hours, just for a few coins and a piece of bread. Unfortunately it is true, unfortunately it is real. The Shadows among the Trees is dedicated to all our dreams, to remind us that we have to follow them, always and forever, finding the meaning of our lives. I’m Aware is inspired by a letter that one of my friends wrote after travelling to Laos, one of the countries where people fight, every day, against unexploded landmines. This song is surely dedicated to all those people who devote their lives to help and save the others.

My Sheltering Sky and Infinita Infinita' are AIR. They are inspired by our instinct and from where it comes. My Sheltering Sky is our spiritual guide, because, when we make a choice, we are never alone. Infinita Infinita' is our soul and its immensity.

Enjoy!

Love, Monica Shannon
