Monica Wright

Monica Wright

BandPopSinger/Songwriter

A jazz-infusion of acoustic pop with an earnest delivery of lyrical confessions.

Biography

Monica Wright was born 25 years ago in Las Vegas, NV. Within 2 years, her parents carried her away to Okinawa, Japan, a place where she'd spend a majority of her formative years while occasionally frequenting the Philippines.

Her musical background is just as eclectic as her ethnicity: Filipino, Choctaw Indian, African-American, and Caucasian. She grew up listening to albums of Cher, Roberta Flack, the Carpenters, Tony Bennett, and Michael Jackson on her father's old record player. Today her influences especially include Donny Hathaway, Jeff Buckley, Tori Amos, and Eva Cassidy.

Wright’s voice is reminiscent of the fluidity of Jewel, the cadence of Rachael Yamagata and the bite of Alanis Morissette. Wright is a natural performer whose voice falls over a crowd like soft confessions. The audience finds itself enchanted by her angelic voice and her dynamic personality.

Lyrics

Hot Air Balloon

Written By: Monica Wright, Mercy Gary, Sophie Severance

Today I saw your face and thought what a time we could have I
Always thought it would happen this way
I could be in love with you
Can you see my heart is swelling?
Can you see me falling off my feet?

Today I skipped my way into the pathway of my love
Enchanted by your sideway glance
And when you looked my way, you sparked a light inside of me
I swore I never had a chance

And I never thought
There would come a day when I could feel this way,
Feel this stir, feel my heart leap,
Feel the hope release me,
Let the feelings take me,
Take me to the place
Soar away, hot air balloon
Where I go when I think of you

Today I heard your voice, it sang to me—I swear it did
Although all you said was “hello
Everyone keeps on asking what it is that keeps me smiling
I blush to think it might be you

And I never thought
There would come a day when I could feel this way,
Feel the stir, feel my heart leap,
Feel the hope release me,
Let the feelings take me,
Take me to the place
Soar away, hot air balloon
Where I go when I think of you

Today I let your presence paint a dream of me and you
Floating on my hot air balloon
Bright colors swirl into a world of possibilities
And I am happy here with you

And I never thought
There would come a day when I could feel this way,
Feel the stir, feel my heart leap,
Feel the hope release me,
Let the feelings take me,
Take me to the place
Soar away, hot air balloon
Where I go when I think of you

When I could feel this way,
Feel this stir, feel my heart leap,
Feel the hope release me,
Let the feelings take me,
Take me to the place
Soar away, hot air balloon
Where I go when I think of you

The Man With The Muse

Written By: Monica Wright, Mercy Gary

So easy to confuse
The man with the muse

I hear my song and reminisce
I've forgotten anything since our last kiss
You've taken on another form
This memory I've carved into my soul
And I cannot shake you from my thoughts
'til I see you, then I see
That your memory is just my fantasy

This time I've spent away from you
Makes you more of the man I've wanted you to be
But I cannot shake it free
The thought that you and I were meant to be
Then I see your image in my mind
And my heart breaks one last time
As I recall us, you and I, embraced in one last kiss

And I spend my nights forlorn
Waiting by the lonely phone
Hoping I'm not all alone
And that you might
Think of me

(instrumental break)

And I spend my nights forlorn
Waiting by the lonely phone
Hoping I'm not all alone
And that you might
Think of me

I feel your heart drifting away
And my mind tells me that I must let you be
There will be another day
When my heart won't feel the ache
Of your bitter kiss, your false embrace--I'll no longer miss
That your memory is just my fantasy

So easy to confuse
The man with the muse

You Want Her

Written By: Monica Wright, Mercy Gary

She sways into the club
She's a flame in a smoky room
She holds your wanton gaze
Can't seem to look away
You want her

She strolls across the floor
Anticipation,
Is she coming for you?
But then her lusty eyes
Zoom on the other guy

She takes a swig of his sloe gin
Then grabs his hand to wipe her sweetened lips
And thanks it with a kiss

Lovely,
Her laughter tickles your skin
You're amused by the game that she plays
Her sinful ways
Can't seem to look away
You want her

She leans in towards his ear
She purrs a secret
Breathes in his stunned gaze
Before he steals a kiss
She turns to walk away

Then suddenly she slows her pace
The baited man has nowhere to escape
Because she always wins

Bridge:
Smiling
Her beautiful sadness
Revealing all the loneliness she feels

Fear running quickly with the close of the night
You gather the courage and rush to her side
You hold her wanton gaze
Wonder what to say

Then she cocks her head to one side
She throws to you her beautiful sad smile
And then the party ends

Black Ford Ranger

Written By: Monica Wright

All I really want is a road trip to Dallas
Cruising up 35 in your black Ford Ranger
Turning 23 is never that easy
Second guessing exactly the moment where…

I’ll record the mix tape, while you go buy the beer
Blow a kiss for luck, let’s hit the road

All I really want is to see you next Friday
Cruising on I-10 in your black Ford Ranger
Visit your mama in Louisiana
Where I stumble upon the source of your…

Smile at the notion your mom thinks I’m your girl
In that awkward stance, we finally know

Bridge:
Detour in Silsbee
Beneath a veil of stars
Lie down beside me
I watch you sleeping
Then I close my eyes
Meanwhile you serenade me
A lullaby of your breathing

All I really want is the first invitation
Cruising down Mulberry in your black Ford Ranger
We will console ourselves at your new apartment
Fumbling, groping, desperately wanting…

Some old-fashion bravery
I make my birthday wish
We realize it with our first kiss

This Man

Written By: Monica Wright, Mercy Gary

This man, he wants to believe
That his spirit will soar free
His sins forgiven
And his heart be whole

This man, he blinds you from his pain
With a smile he flashes
You can’t see his heart, it pounds
With the pain he patches

The brittleness of a broken man
Pieced back together by beer and one-night stands
It would break your heart if you knew
What he has to hide to keep you smiling

This man, he smiles through the crowds
And drinks a little too much
But when he hugs you
He’s really wanting you to hold him

This man who charms you with a smile
And his confident stride
Has reasons you don’t know
To trip and fall

The brittleness of a broken man
Pieced back together by beer and one-night stands
It would break your heart if you knew
What he has to hide to keep you smiling

This man, he acts out social graces
Expectations of pretense
He’s so used to hiding
Behind the mask

This man, he wants you to believe
In the man he hopes to be
Keeping his head high
Refusing to be brought down to his knees

The brittleness of a broken man
Pieced back together by beer and one-night stands
It would break your heart if you knew
What he has to hide to keep you smiling

And you will never feel the sadness within
‘Cause he’s learned to take it like a man

Twenty-something Renaissance Man

Written By: Monica Wright

Former rookie racecar driver
From Topeka, Kansas
At just 6 years old
No more that little boy
Now a man of 25
About to change so many lives
But he doesn’t know

Pre-chorus:
With conviction in one hand
And his Gibson in the other
He can charm the coldest cynic’s heart
With a tune, with a pluck

Chorus:
If you don’t really see
All the bitter, the sweet
In this twenty-something renaissance man
You don’t know Jack like me

When his girlfriend hears this
She’ll kick my ass in
After just one listen
She’ll think I’m stealing her boyfriend
But don’t get me wrong
I’m easily mistaken
I just want to praise him
With a clever song

Pre-chorus:
With conviction in one hand
And his Gibson in the other
He can charm the coldest cynic’s heart
With a tune, with a pluck

Chorus:
If you don’t really see
All the bitter, the sweet
In this twenty-something renaissance man
You don’t know Jack like me

Bridge:
He’s not a muse
He’s just a man…with a heart of gold

Lacks a silver tongue
Never ostentatious
He is rather ingenuous
An ex-loser in love
No way, he's no Lloyd Dobbler
He is so much hotter
Than he'll ever know

Pre-chorus:
With conviction in one hand
And his Gibson in the other
He can charm the coldest cynic’s heart
With a tune, with a pluck

Chorus:
If you don’t really see
All the bitter, the sweet
In this twenty-something renaissance man
You don’t know Jack like me

He’s got a girlfriend
Who wants to kick my ass in
But I won’t steal him
He’s just a good friend
