Bio

Monk is a five piece reggae-fusion group hailing from the Siskiyou Mountains of Ashland, Oregon. In the bands first two years they have toured diligently throughout the Pacific Northwest, Southwest, and Great Basin region. They have performed over 230 shows in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. This springs tour will see them travel South through California, into Arizona, up through Colorado, over to Utah, through Idaho, and back home again. The band is currently backing up and coming west coast rub-a-dub reggae artist, Marko (myspace.com/djmarkoinc); supporting the late 2009 release of his full-length album “All the Love that I’ve Found.” Also featured is roots/soul singer Dubbs (myspace.com/adamevolve), and Roots reggae vocalist, Neil Mangicaro (myspace.com/monkablast).

“Pick your brother up when you see a brother fall.” Neil Mangicaro (from the song “Lessons”)

These vocalists are not only featured, but they perform in the band as well. Monk has built a name for themselves as a group of musically diverse artists with the ability to seamlessly transition from one instrument to another. All three vocalists are part of the instrumentation, backing each other. The group is rounded out by keyboardist Thomas Mackay (Three Leg Torso, Tasty Trio), and bassist Jake the Ripper.

“You better change the world, cuz it won’t change for you.” Dubbs (from the song “Say I”)

Their sound is a fusion of roots reggae, dancehall, and electronica dance beats. The show is a high-energy effortless flow of pulsing rhythms and danceable beats encompassing a tight song structure with moments of improvisation. The lyrics are consciously based and encompass the ethos and ideals that make up the Southern Oregon lifestyle. Music with a message, intended to spread community awareness and the need for growth and unity in these turbulent times. Keep an ear to the wind and your eyes open as Monk will be coming to a town near you in 2010. See you at the show!

“Five minutes to showtime and I, try come correct every time.” Marko (from the song, “Cool and Easy”)
