Biography

Monowheel is the solo project of singer-songwriter David James Call. After being in various bands in and after high school, Call had a difficult time finding other musicians with his same vision, and decided that he would begin his solo career. With only himself on stage, Call mesmerizes the crowds with his dynamic stage presence, awesome bass skills, punchy electronic backing tracks, and his unforgettable vocal chords.

Call grew up adoring the catchy tunes of New Order, The Cure, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd. With a background of new wave and classic rock, Call introduced a heavy dance element to his music after frequenting LA's industrial clubs. "I love to get out there, dance and sweat. And if I find myself singing along, I'll ask the DJ who the artist was." says Call.

In 1999, Call tried forming a 5-piece band, but found it difficult to find artists having his vision. After countless try-outs, Call decided to take matters into his own hands. Call recounts "I remember spending a lot of time with my drummer, trying to get him to play the patterns I wanted for the songs, and I thought... I could teach my sequencer to play exactly what I want hear with no communication breakdowns." Later that year Monowheel was formed.

Initially, Monowheel was a very minimal, idealistic sort of sound, consisting of only sequenced drums and bass guitar. On his first single, Wishing Well Token, that's all there was on the recording. Call says "I play my bass like a lead instrument. Peter Hook [of New Order] showed me what potential my bass has. It's limitless." After that drum and synth sequences flourished to become the signature dancable industrial sound you hear today.
