Bio

For multi-talented HLE/Native/Fontana/Universal Recording Artist Montell Jordan, the journey that launched his much anticipated seventh album- the soul stirring “LET IT RAIN”-began in a much different place. “It began in front of the mirror”, says the charismatic singer/songwriter, “This is definitely the first time I have given so much of my soul on an album. I had to fall in love with the music again, it was a personal journey. I’ve been all over the world Africa, Cuba, Ireland, Asia, Greece, Croatia- you name it. I’ve been on hundreds of stages, won my share of awards. But now I realized that in all my travels I was really searching for me-the real Montell Jordan.”

Make no mistake-Montell’s new album may delve into more intimate storylines, but the torrid slabs of pulse pounding beats like on the title track “Let it Rain”—proclaim loud and clear that the emotive, one-man arsenal has never been tighter. “That song was written as I experienced some of the trials over the last couple years, but saying it didn’t matter what came were still going to be alright.” This sizzling cut ensures that ‘Mr. Jordan’ is going to be just fine. I’ve done a lot of growing and learning since my last album “Life After Def” been through a lot of different things but through it all I found me and my love for music again. It took a lot of soul searching.

“In the past, I had written a lot about external situations. I always worried about what my audience wanted to hear. For the first time I didn’t go outside my own life for the narrative.” Powerful songs like “Left Alone” and “”Not No More” are painful tales I endured that made me even stronger. On “Left Alone, I’m talking about the music business and how I felt after being in it so long, and how I felt she treated me. It sounds like I’m talking about a girl but it is a metaphor about the record industry.”

Montell hooks up with long time collaborator James Jones Jr. who was the VP of A & R at Def Jam Records on his second album. The two have remained friends and have a creative magic that has lasted a decade, and they producer under the moniker of Hits R’Us. James came from Uptown Records where he worked also as VP of A & R with such acts as Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, Father MC and Heavy D. He also introduces a new artist Cignature on his duet “Not No More”, her stellar vocal delivery on this thought provoking ballad poises her to be the next hot female coming out of ATL.

In many ways, Montell feels the raw emotion of the new disc parallels another ‘turning point’ in his life; His multi-million selling debut smash-1995’s This Is How We Do It. “It was pretty liberating to make a record this way. Although it brought a different “Pressure” it was the first time since my first album I had felt so free and hungry to make great music. On my first album, the things I wrote about were tipping up forty ouncers. I’ve grown. I’ve covered a lot of territory and experienced life on a different level now. This album-in a different way, of course- is as inspiring as my first.”

The album is a mixture of sly beats and street-infected wordplay changed the R&B landscape. It was the first Def Jam album to hit #1 on the Top Album Chart, holding the top spot for almost two months. The runaway smash single, “This Is How We Do It” celebrated South Central street vibe, becoming a precursor for the grittier, hip-hop tinged R&B that would dominate the charts by the end of the 90’s. Montell followed up his debut success with platinum selling album More; releasing the hit single “I Like” which was also featured on the sound track for Eddie Murphy’s “The Nutty Professor”. Successful tours with superstars such as Boyz II Men, TLC< Mary J. Blige, The Isley Brothers also established Montell as a potent live artist. He then unleashed his eclectic, dirty south driven “Let’s Ride” which included the hit title cut, also garnering platinum sales. The multi-textured album reflected Montell’s hearty appetite for collaboration, featuring Redman, Master and many others. The album also showcased Montell’s gift at balladry with an ode to his daughter Sydney, the tender ‘Missing You”. Montell also found time to produce the genre leaping smash hit, “Nobody’s Supposed to be Here,” for Deborah Cox and “Incomplete” for Sisqo. Taking both of those stars to multi platinum record sales and further establishing him as a pop force to be reckoned with. He has produced for such artists as Whitney Houston, Deborah Cox, Sisqo, Dru Hill, Tamia, Kelly Price, Boyz II Men and many others.

Montell also began to stretch his wings globally, with visits to Ireland (where he collaborated with Hot House Flowers, Brian Kennedy, Dave Koz and many others), to Cuba (where he worked with Gladys Knight, Bonnie Raitt, Mick Fleetwood and many others), as part of a music exchange program called “Music Bridges,” as well as the president inauguration in Africa covering most of the regions in Africa.
