We decided to explore a little neighborhood called Rainey St, where all these cute little houses are actually bars/restaurants. We walked until we heard a sound we liked and that sound was from Oklahoma City-based band Mont Lyons. The keyboardist looked unassuming in glasses and a denim shirt, but he could really wail! He harmonizes with the guitarist and the band was super solid. They’re working on a 6-song EP right now, recording in Wayne Coyne’s studio.
They used to live in Austin – and, coincidentally, were friends with the very first band I saw at SX this year, local trio Marmalakes, who opened for Portugal. The Man. - KCRW Music Blog
Our first big find of SXSW is Mont Lyons, an Oklahoma-based band with a heavy Rhodes sound and in the pocket groove. As is par for the course down here, we stumbled upon them just looking for a place to sit down. We were drawn to our feet in no time and the young band’s self-deprecating charm—“look us up!” started the baby-faced lead singer and keyboardist, “or don’t!”—was no match for their impressive performances, prompting our heartfelt reply that we would indeed commit these boys to memory. - WERS 88.9 fm Boston
Mont Lyons pounds out a gritty, shadowy rock'n'roll. Tension rumbles in their songs, but doesn't quite boil: Instead of finishing with a pounding, all-cymbals rush, a high, keening note eerily faded off into the distance. The vocals work within this framework, pushing the boundaries of the tension without ever really spilling over into all-out attack mode. That's the type of sound that Mont Lyons cultivates: low-to-the-ground, punchy tunes with a deep sense of tension. The keys offer a dreamy counterpoint to some of the tension, but we all know that dreams can be more tense than reality itself. - The Oklahoma Gazette
Mont Lyons came up after [Second Chance] this and was best described by a friend as a very modern Simon and Garfunkel. Very mellow but well written and with the electric piano on the stage, decidedly nice as well. I can definitely see these guys doing some early afternoon/early evening shows that would be nice to chill at and start your night right. - Spineless Willy
Mont Lyons has been toying with us in regards to the release of their EP Sleeptalk. Well good news… the EP is finally out and you can get it on iTunes here. Here at newdust we are huge fans of Mont Lyon’s haunting vocals, eerie harmonies, and pop hooks. Enjoy “Company” and check out more songs about ghosts here. Nice work guys! - Newdust
