Bio
I have been a student of music, since I got my first LP at 8. Growing up
across the river from Detroit, I was immediately enthralled with urban
electric music. I first started experimenting with sampling in 1986,
This tape I made when I was 13, pause and record on my ghetto blaster:

I think I was breaking ground, but had no idea and no support. My folks
wanted me to concentrate on school and athletics. I asked them for a
set of turntables and a sampler for my 16th birthday. This would mark
the beginning of my music career. They threw me a surprise party - all
my friends showed up... but the music gear never did. That was the
turning point in my life I think.. The next year I got drafted by the
Kansas City Royals to go an play professional baseball. Music was still
my first love and I knew I would always come back to it. It was
omnipresent. Now that I had money, I could buy my own gear. After
retiring from baseball in 96, I started making music more actively
again, although I had been experimenting all along. I started
performing live for the first time, 2004 in Vancouver - using sampled
guitar, and on the spot unique compositions, like this one:

I had a great trajectory going... then I became a Dad. The ghetto
blaster was on pause for the moment. And I became a midnight musician,
playing and exploring when my daughter was in bed. I bought an MPC 1000
in 2008. I started filling it will all of the collected sounds, from
all those years - collected cassettes, found sounds, old LPs, original
compositions…
Shortly thereafter, Moon McMullen was reborn. A
moniker dubbed after my Grandfather James ‘Moon’ McMullen. He was the
closest person in my life, until he died when I was 13. He was a
towering man, just like me - 6 foot 4. He made things out of garbage he
collected. Bikes, cars, toy boxes... machines. Very much like the way
I make music. Something out of nothing, with a lot of heart.
With this project, that spirit is carried forward. I will find a way to share it, with as many people as I can.
