Winona band MoonDawg to release new CD on Saturday at Draught Haus

By Käri Knutson | Winona Daily News
The musical lair of Winona band MoonDawg looks just as a musical lair should. Posters of past performances adorn the basement walls. Cords cover the floor, connecting amps, guitar pedals and microphones. An opened case of Pabst Blue Ribbon rests next to a speaker. A lone penny sticks to the floor near a coffee table. On the table is a crinkled map of the United States with a stack of MoonDawg handbills on top of it.

MoonDawg is not content to stay in Winona. The band is planning and plotting shows across the country.

On Saturday, the band will play at the Draught Haus for its CD release party. After that, they will venture to Madison, Wis.; St. Louis, Mo.; Austin, Texas; and the Iowa towns of Iowa City, Waukon and Decorah. They hope to add more dates along the way.

The four members all have day jobs, but music is their passion.

“That’s why we work so hard,” singer/guitarist Bryan Crigler said. “We don’t want this to end.”

Crigler, 29, is joined by lead guitarist Jim Trouten, 30, bassist Scott Lochner, 28, and drummer Al MacDonald, 25.

They say their sound and lyrics have evolved since the band’s early days when they did more “love songs.”

“A lot of those love songs were written in college when we thought we knew something about the world,” Crigler said. “We didn’t.”

The band’s third CD, “Dreams Fall,” is dark. The cover artwork, done by Crigler’s cousin, shows a man taking off a blindfold.

“The common theme is being trapped, whether it’s in a relationship or by society’s standards,” Crigler said.

The band says age and experience are both responsible for the musical evolution. Also, Crigler changed from acoustic to electric guitar, giving the band a heavier sound.

“I love the direction we’ve gone,” Crigler said. “I like that if you’re angry about something, you get to tell people what you think.”

MoonDawg played 80 shows in 2006. In 2007, they slowed to 45 shows, allowing plenty of time to record “Dreams Fall” at Two Fish Studios in Mankato, Minn. The studio used to be an old church. For their third recording, MoonDawg threw aside its budget and decided to make the best recording they possibly could.

Every sound, down to handclaps and the sound of the channel turning on an old TV, was done by the band itself.

“It’s cool to have everything on the CD organic,” MacDonald said. “It’s all us.”

They’re also proud that their CD case is made of 100 percent recycled materials.

MoonDawg is constantly working on new songs. The newest ones by Crigler and Trouten are even darker and heavier than those on “Dreams Fall.”

Perhaps it’s the sound of things to come.

“We want to continue to evolve,” Trouten said. “This isn’t the end.”

"Dreams Fall Album Review"

MoonDawg's most recent release titled Dreams Fall shows this quartet is still here to rock. With a revitalized new formation with the addition of drummer Al MacDonald and an always impressive live show, they are showing what the Winona, MN area music scene has to offer. By not conforming to what's trendy, they were able to produce a solid rock-and-roll album in the classic sense of the word while doing something new and their own. It presents MoonDawg's musical diversity with their abilities to change style types, moods, and lead parts for all their instruments and vocalists throughout the album. Lead vocalist and guitarist Bryan Crigler shows the presence of a front-man with his distinct unique vocal styling. Lead guitarist Jim Trouten displays his great guitar and vocal abilities on songs like 'Too Late' and 'Indifference'. The heartbeat of the band is held down by the solid rhythm section made up of bass player Scotty Lochner and drummer Al Macdonald. - Mikey Paul 89.5 KQAL Radio

Bio

MoonDawg is a Rock 'n Roll band who plays music that resembles Classic 70's rock attitude but with modern sounds and lyrics. The band hails from Winona, MN on the Mighty Mississippi River and the eclectic music would be good for either raging down the bluffs on your bike, or paddling the backwaters. ...but what it all comes down to is the show. MoonDawg has a solid live performance that you're gonna love.

Moon Dawg recorded their first album "Ajama" in February 2005 and shortly after recorded their first DVD, "Live at Rascals." Both were great successes. In December 2005, the band made their stepping-stone recording, "The EP," which outlined the stylistic evolution of the band at the time.

After the birth of "The EP" the band really started turning up the heat and touring throughout the midwest. In early 2007 Moon Dawg picked up Rock 'n Roll drumming sensation, Al MacDonald, and together made a solemn vow to reincarnate the essence of Rock.

Moon Dawg worked diligently on thier new album "Dreams Fall" and released it this winter (2008). It has already changed many lives and will definitely change yours.
