Bio

The band Moraitika was founded in Novi Sad in 2009 with intention to play songs composed by the pianist Nera Beljanski. Besides many performances in Novi Sad, the band also played on Exit festival being the winner of the competition Play at Exit in 2010. Moraitika is currently recording its first demo album called "Gate to the sea" (songs scented with salt) inspired by ambiance of sea. This album belongs to World Music category, blending in itself the classical style, ethno elements and a tone of jazz. It can be characterized as ambient music with unusual texts in an unknown language. Such texts are frequently improvized during the performance and the names of the songs are given as a theme for listener's personal meditation. The melodies are light, melismatic, and easily sung due to the softness of the words. Since the text is incomprehensible, it has a rather relaxing effect by making the voice be treated as another instrument. The members of the band are young artists and performers who as well contribute to the creation of this music: Miroslav Pestelek (alt saxophone, keyboard, voice, tambourine, rain stick), Marijana Ljiljak (accordion, goblet drum, keyboard, voice), SiniĊĦa Balog (accordion, bongo drum, goblet drum, voice) and Aleksandar Erbes (acoustic guitar). At its beginnings, the band was somewhat different, having Gabrijela Koso (bassoon, voice) beside Nera Beljanski and Marijana Ljiljak. What precedes "Gate to the sea" is a completely different series of songs put together on Nera Beljanski's first album called "In Moon's drops". This album has not been published so far in Serbian language.
