BandFolkRock

A good songwriter is hard to find these days, but Morgan Haner is trying to fill that gap. Dominated by capos and harmonicas, his rootsy guitar riffs and unvarnished vocals combine with some garage grunge to make a special Morgan Haner folk-rock blend.

Biography

Taking his cue from songwriting legends like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, Morgan spends much of his time studying the art of song construction. It is his goal to become the best songwriter he can possibly be. His influences range from the folk-blues of the Rev. Gary Davis, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGhee to the finger-pointing songs of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Which is not to say that he doesn't pay attention to contemporary artists--indeed, bands such as My Morning Jacket, Wilco, and Donna the Buffalo have become integral to the development of Morgan's sound.

Lyrics

Let's Go Out Tonight

Written By: Morgan Haner

Let's go down to Miller's Grove
and watch the river roll.
We'll get some water on our feet and
take a little stroll

Come on out tonight, baby,
we're gonna have a blast,
we'll play the music good and loud
and drive this car too fast

Let's go out tonight
It'll be all right
You don't have to worry no more
No one out here is even keeping score
Let's go out tonight

We can build us a campfire
and sing a couple songs,
then you can crawl into my sleeping bag
and we'll turn these rights to wrongs

Then we can park it in the field somewhere
and look up at the sky,
darker than any coal,
brighter than any eye

Let's go out tonight,
it'll be all right,
you don't have to worry anymore,
no one out here is even keeping score,
let's go out tonight.

And after all is done and said
I can lay down by your side,
put your head next to my head
and be glad that we're still alive

Let's go out tonight,
it'll be all right.
You don't have to worry no more,
no one out here is even keeping score,
let's go out tonight [repeat]

Some People Say

Written By: Morgan Haner

Some people say you should
just keep your feet on the ground,
and some people say you should
just let the world spin around.
And some people might tell you
that you look just like a clown,
but people say so many things
that you just can't believe.

You just can't believe,
oh no, you can't stand to listen,
you can't heed advice when it's not
given by a friend,
but even then you just
don't know what to believe.

And some people say that
God does not exist,
and some people say that He does
but that I just missed Him.
And some people say that He
resides in a lover's kiss,
but people say so many things
that you just can't believe.

You just can't believe, oh no,
you can't stand to listen.
You can't heed advice when it's not
given by a friend,
but even then, you just don't know
what to believe.

And some people say that we should
put down all of our guns,
while others yell, "Well, we're the ones
who need them."
And some people think we ought to send
our daughters and our sons
to the war, but people say things
you just can't believe.

And some people say
we need more money,
and others think that that's just
too goddamn funny,
and some people think that things
don't look too sunny,
oh, but honey, I just don't know
what to believe...

What to believe, oh no,
you can't stand to listen.
You can't heed advice when it's not
given by a friend, oh, but even then,
you just don't know what to believe...
Oh, but even then you just don't know...

Heaven Song

Written By: Morgan Haner

When your hands are empty
and your clothes are torn,
when you're cold and lonesome,
like you've just been born...

When you lie awakened
in the dead of night,
when you lose your mind,
when you lose your sight,

You will be free
when you know that
Heaven isn't real.
Yes, you will be free
when you know that
Heaven isn't real.

There's no salvation
except the kind you make,
and there's no forgiveness
except the kind you take

And there are no crimes
for which you stand accused
and there are no demons
hiding in your shoes

but you will be free
when you know
that Heaven isn't real
yes, you will be free
when you know
that Heaven isn't real

And you must remember
that what you know is real,
and all your memories
they can never steal

The past is over,
and the ghosts are dead,
and all that sorrow
is only in your head.

But you will be free
when you know
that Heaven isn't real,
yes, you will be free,
when you know
that Heaven isn't real.

The Ballad of the Vampire Bats

Written By: Morgan Haner

Well, they lie to your friends,
and they lie to your children,
they lie to your face
and they lie through their teeth.
They don't give a damn
about you or your loved ones,
they don't bring you nothin'
but sorrow and grief.

There's no better word
to describe them but "evil,"
I've tried and I've tried
but that's all I can say.
They're no longer men
and they're no longer huamn--
they spill the black blood
in the water and clay

But all the money-makers,
earth-shakers and life-takers,
put together can't hold a candle to you.
All the slick dealers, movie-reelers,
and land stealers,
can't do the things that you can do...

They cling to your neck
like so many leeches,
bound and determined
to suck you bone dry.
To steal from your veins,
to steal from your pockets,
to suck from your eyes
until you can't even cry.

They've done it before
and they'll do it forever,
'til every last creature
on this Earth is dead.
Turn the oceans to graveyards,
and the forests to deserts,
over every last breathing
skull they will tread

Well, all the money-makers,
earth-shakers, and life-takers,
put together can't hold a candle to you.
All the slick dealers, movie-reelers,
and land-stealers,
can't do the things that you can do.

Now the air has turned brown,
the water's on fire,
there's all kinds of poison
in my baby's heart.
And if I ever get all these
bats off of my neck
I swear to God, I'll break theirs in half
and that's only the start

But all the money-makers,
earth-shakers, and life-takers,
put together can't hold a candle to you.
All the slick dealers, movie-reelers,
and land stealers,
can't do the things that you can do
