"REVIEW SEGMENT OF ONCE AROUND THE SUN"

NY 1 Review - Once Around The Sun  by Roma Torre

Aired Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 9:50 am on "On Stage", repeated: 7:30 pm, Sunday 9:30 am and 7:30 pm; Monday 7:30 pm and 12:30 am

How refreshing to find a new musical in town that is filled with platinum-grade talent and tunes to match.  ONCE AROUND THE SUN features music by twin brothers Robert and Steven Morris along with Joe Shane and a book by Kellie Overbey.  And while the story concerning the music business is nothing new and even somewhat cliché, ONCE AROUND THE SUN, one of the most engaging new shows of the year, is certainly worth the trip....

It's got the soul of a musical with a heart that breathes to the rhythm of rock. And each song is a gem propelling the story and deepening the characters.  The composers exhibit a tremendous range of knowledge of disparate song styles from Led Zeppelin to Frank Sinatra.  And while it is all original, the numbers have a catchy familiarity that makes them irresistible.  They also have great fun satirizing the American Idol fad storming the nation.

The performers, all tremendously gifted, add dimension to their seemingly stock roles and each is rewarded with a knockout number...

Ultimately, ONCE AROUND THE SUN is about the liberating joys of creating music and how thrilling to discover that the music in the show is so joyously liberating itself.  It is not perfect, but you will find ONCE AROUND THE SUN entertaining and a very cool diversion on a hot summer night.

2005 In Review: The Year In Theater
December 23, 2005

For the next 10 days NY1 will be taking a look back at the people, places and events that have shaped the past year. Included in that retrospective is New York's very vibrant theatre scene. NY1's chief theater critic Roma Torre looks back at the year in the theater in the following report.

These were among the year's best on Broadway. How can you beat this royal flush of veterans: Tim Curry, Hank Azaria, David Hyde Pierce, Philip Bosco, Liev Schreiber, Alan Alda, Billy Crudup and Jeff Goldblum, to name just a few...

And let's hear it for the class of up and comers:

the Broadway bound Robert and Steven Morris took their brother act along with Joe Shane to new heights with their rock musical “Once Around the Sun.”

It was a strong year on Broadway in art and commerce. Box office receipts were way up, along with attendance, a reflection perhaps of the unusually high quality that dominated the year.

Once Around the Sun — the new Off-Broadway musical at the Zipper Theatre starring Asa Somers and Maya Days — will likely open on Broadway in fall 2006.

Producers of the musical announced Sept. 15 that they plan to present the musical on Broadway next year. In a statement producer Barry Funt said, "Our run at the Zipper Theatre was the initial part of the process in readying the show for Broadway. We are thrilled with the audience response to this musical. After our run at the Zipper concludes, we are all ready to roll up our sleeves and prepare Once Around the Sun for Broadway audiences in fall 2006."

Once Around the Sun feature a score by Robert Morris, Steven Morris and Joe Shane and a book by Kellie Overbey. The cast — directed by Jace Alexander — comprises Somers, Days, Caren Lyn Manuel, Kevin Mambo, John Hickok, Jesse Lenat and Wes Little. The production was recently extended and will play the Zipper through Oct. 16.

Once Around the Sun, according to production notes, concerns "an invitation from a beautiful stranger [that] offers a struggling New York musician the opportunity to escape his disappointments and take a leap of faith into his dream — but at the risk of betraying family, life-long friends and true love. Seduced by his desire to finally be heard, he makes some unexpected choices and ultimately discovers the flight to glory is nothing like he could have ever imagined."

The creative team comprises Beowulf Borritt (scenic design), Daniel Lawson (costume design), Jason Lyons (lighting design), T. Richard Fitzgerald (sound design), Henry Aronson (musical direction) and David Spinozza (musical supervision).

The Zipper Theatre is located in Manhattan at 336 West 37th Street. The Once Around the Sun performance schedule is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3 and 8 PM and Sundays at 3 and 7 PM. Tickets, priced at $60, are available by calling (212) 239 6200.

In related news, a portion of the mezzanine seats at each performance of Once Around the Sun will be available for a minimum donation of $10. All proceeds from those seats will be donated to the American Red Cross - PLAYBILL.COM

Bio

Morris Brothers, the songwriting duo of twin brothers Robert and Steven Morris, once again seduce the listener into their enigmatic world of pop songwriting with the exciting new release ONE LESS DREAM.

Produced by Paul Boutin and recorded at Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds studio in Los Angeles, ONE LESS DREAM blends artful groove and harmony with emotive melodies and cinematic lyrics that are at once probing yet unconventional.

ONE LESS DREAM is a sonically superb recording with first-rate production and playing as well. Morris Brothers (who handle the vocal, guitar, bass and keyboard duties) elisted legendary drummer Ricky Lawson (Michael Jackson/Clapton/Steely Dan) who sizzles throughout the 11 distinct tracks. Lawson calls the brothers "a force to be reckoned with, some of the best composers I've worked with since Steely Dan."

In addition to pop music, the brothers recently made their theatrical debut as composers/lyricists with the new musical Once Around The Sun. When reviewing the show for Time Warner's NY1, chief theater critic Roma Torre commented "each song is a gem propelling the story and deepening the characters...how thrilling to discover that the music in the show is so joyously liberating" and the Morris Brothers "have an album coming out...they are names to be remembered."

And the album is sure to make a mark. Upon hearing ONE LESS DREAM, New York's elite Guitarist/Producer David Spinozza (James Taylor/Paul Simon/Billy Joel) called it "a lesson in smart pop songwriting"-the record illustrates Morris Brothers "soulfulness, craft and sophistication."
