Moscow Schoolboy took time out from the studio to play for the Ding Dong crowd, and they certainly looked like they were blowing off a little steam. There was a little Oasis in the act, with a definite ‘I want what they’re on’ sort of vibe in the place.
That said, there’s certainly plenty of space in live shows for a little excess, and it didn’t get in the way of the music.
Moscow Schoolboy give a much needed injection of sex back into Aussie rock. The whole set was dripping in sleaze, and the air was thick with sexual tension.
Jess is a fantastic frontwoman, almost like a female Nick Cave with the delivery of her lyrics, but the lyrics themselves are more like Peaches. Each song seems to revolve around some sexual encounter or predicament she’s experienced, giving the show a sort of voyeuristic element that puts another dimension on top of the set.
They’re obviously a very talented group, they don’t play their instruments as much as use them to fit together into a really unique sound. Some of the basslines are bluesy, but then they can swing into a pop track in a flash.
As a testament to their expanding confidence and creativity, not only do they not play their breakthrough track Use Me Back, but they don’t need to. Their new stuff is full of the intensity and tension of their earlier work, which augers well for their upcoming release.

MOSCOW SCHOOLBOY'S latest recording, their much-anticipated six-song CD Black Dogs,
was recorded and mixed by producer Tim Johnston. Tim was chosen for his work with Nick Cave & the Badseeds, Dallas Crane, Even, and Tex Perkins.
This recording sees Moscow Schoolboy exploring a new, darker territory, with instrumentation including Rhodes, Hammond Organ and acoustic piano replacing the synth sounds of previous recordings. The songs retain their danceable edge but with more attention to detail in the jagged, layered electric guitars and expansive rhythm section.
The themes of Black Dogs swing between envy, madness and lust, Jess’s distinct vocals giving the songs suprising vibrancy and energy.
This will be the second release from MOSCOW SCHOOLBOY, who’s debut EP My Sister And The Devil created a buzz when it was released through Silent Partner/Inertia earlier this year. My Sister And The Devil produced the single Use Me Back, which was added to rotation on both Triple J and Sydney’s Fbi fm, and also I Like Your Head which aired regularly on Melbourne’s Triple R and Brisbane’s 4zzz.
Triple J’s magazine ‘Jmag’ also featured Moscow Schoolboy in the Home And Hosed ‘What’s Hot Right Now’ section of their Winter issue, and J TV (ABC) have filmed a segment on Moscow Schoolboy, detailing their compositions for ‘The Band’. This is an underground erotic art film, being made by Hungry Films and shot in Melbourne. Moscow Schoolboy are also providing tracks off ‘My Sister And the Devil’ for use in the film’s soundtrack.
Moscow Schoolboy have played shows with Infadels (UK), Faker, Bit By Bats, Midnight Juggernauts, The Vasco Era, Expatriate and Damn Arms.
