"60 Seconds With… Mosé + The FMLY"

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?
A lot of people say we sound like The Roots. I get that, hip hop band, makes sense. Others, say we sound like Rage Against The Machine and we can get fairly heavy, but we're too nice for that. We get pretty synthy too, so it's really a mixture of hip hop and maybe this new future soul business?

When are you playing live/releasing your album/EP/single/etc?
So we're going on our first tour this month around Australia. Well really only four cities, but that warrants a tour right? We're heading to Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and our hometown Melbourne. I also released a single entitled Overdose to go with the tour, which is pretty cool. Check it out.

What part of making music excites you the most?
The feeling you get when you put pen to pad, and look up and a few hours have past and you've got this sweet track. Sometimes when you push for ideas too hard it doesn't work, but that natural process and hearing the end product is something special.

What part of making music discourages you?
Honestly, sometimes looking around at the community around you can make you ecstatic, or just break your spirit. Sometimes the hip hop community can make me cringe. The issues and complacency that comes with the genre and its commentary on the separation from other hip hop streams like the US or UK scene. Just make music or shut up.

Describe the best gig you have ever played.
Could be when we played at this sweet bar in San Diego, or one of our many shows at The Espy. San Diego was sweet, because no one knew what they were in for, and probably looked at us and clowned us. But we got on stage and were able to get the whole crowd live, great feeling. The Espy is just always loose, great vibe.

If someone made a movie about your life, who would play you?
I would love to say someone like Denzel Washington or Jeremy Piven (Ari Gold from Entourage), but let's be honest it'd either be Jerry Ferrara (Turtle) from Entourage or Victor Rasuk (Hispanic guy from How To Make It In America), or some Bollywood star.

If you could go on tour with any musician or band, who would it be?
Prince, Nas or Outkast. Or Kanye West.

Why should everyone come and see your band?
At the end of the day, we're home-grown hip hop who try and do the music that we love justice. We put everything into our live show, and make it as hype as possible, and we love the crowds, and make sure you know it! - See more at: http://www.beat.com.au/music/60-seconds-mos-fmly#sthash.eRplFQyt.dpuf - Beat Magazine

"Q&A: Mosé VS Speech Therapy"

Speech Therapy asks Mosé

How many members make up the FMLY and which roles do each of you partake?

Six people comprise the FMLY, myself (Mosé) taking the role of MC, Tash Fernando taking the role of Backing Vocals, DroopyRoof on the Guitar, Constant Voglis on the Bass, Loyal Tuariki on Drums and Matt Brewer on Keys.

Where do you find the majority of inspiration derives from when making music?

My inspiration comes from life and people and from my faith. When I make music I observe and report and create situations that intrigue the listener, leaving them wanting more of the scenario (and my rhymes).

If you guys could fight one band in the world dead or alive who would it be?

Simple Plan/Jonas Brothers, it'd be an easy win and a win for society.

In ten years where do you hope to see yourself?

Selling out Madison Square Garden! And inspiring people.

"Interview with Mosé"

So, tell me a little bit about yourself.

G’day mate. My name’s Mosé. I’m from Melbourne, Australia. I am currently a musical artist, but some people call me a hip hop emcee. I produce a few beats on the side, wear fresh clothes, and…you know, I love a drink with the mates!

Where did the name ‘Mosé’ come from?

Mosé, Mosé. Well, it’s an interesting situation here. My last name is actually Mohan. For a long time now, I really feel like, lyrically, I need to have a say. More say. Get the word out, and try to get my gospel out. So I decided to put them both together, add a bit of flavour, and I got Mosé.

*Mosé comments on the name ‘Prophet Jay’: “Prophet Jay. I like that. I’m kinda feeling that. Prophet Jay…”*

Alright, cool. What are you trying to do with your music.

Man, I’m just trying to reach the people who really need to be reached – the people who really need a good dose of good vibes, and basically some really good music, along with a really sweet message that gets people up. I want people to be inspired by my music. I want people to walk away with goosebumps, like after I’ve finished listening to Empire State of Mind, Bittersweet Symphony, or Imagine by John Lennon. Or any Nas track.

*laughs* *Have you heard the BET cyphers? The beats are crazy. Have you heard the beats? ‘Cos Primo spins on them, yeah. The beats are craaazy.*

You were affiliated with the now defunct Rhythm Project. How was that?

RP was good, man. I mean, it seriously gave me a lot of insight, and a lot of opportunity. You know, I enjoyed performing with them, I enjoyed doing my thing. I got a lot of exposure, but exposure to a lot of things. Sad to see RP break up after such a long time, as well.

Early last year, you released your debut EP, ‘In The Name Of…’. Can you tell us a little bit about how that went down?

Yeah, I put that EP together in about 2 weeks. Written and recorded for about 2 weeks. It had been building up for a couple of months though. I built up to those two weeks for a couple of months. Yeah, it was good. Pressed and released. I didn’t expect to see as much success as I got. I was just selling it independently at my gigs, and it was crazy to see the support that I got, and the amount of copies sold. I didn’t expect to see the success from the relatively small project.

So there’s been talk of an upcoming album release. Can you give us any insight into where that’s at?

Well, we’re not in the baby-stages yet. We’re still writing the record, still recording a lot of tracks. We’re just trying to make some music that people. Music that people can bump on a regular basis. It’ll probably be finished by next March/April.

Cool, cool. What can we expect from the record, in terms of production and any guest artists?

Umm. Hmm. In terms of production, you’ll be seeing a lot of production from myself and my man, DroopyRoof. He’s dope. He’s real dope. Also have a few beats from a producer called P.R. from Sydney. In terms of guest artists, they will come in the form of EN-V, also out out of the Western Suburbs of Melbourne, Soloi Kalepo and Tammy Ari.

Sounds good. A lot of up and comers, then.

For sure, for sure. That’s what we’re trying to do. Trying to get people who have helped me out, and I’m just trying to show my respect and my appreciation.

You work closely with DroopyRoof. How did that relationship begin?

I met Droopy back in high-school. You know, and we sort of just hit it off. We both loved music, we both loved the grassroots level of making music. I think we had a real cool vibe around us, a real cool energy supporting us. So I was like, ‘Yo, we should do something with this.’ So, uh, I guess the rest is history.

Sweet as. Can you tell us who you cite as your major influences?

Major influences. *exhale*. Musically, I’d say that there’s a whole lot of cats. Nas, for sure. He is probably one of my major influences. Talib Kweli, A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, and even the Beatles. People like Israel Houghton, Kirk Franklin – everyone from Mozart to MGMT.

Fairly broad in your influences. A lot of rappers these days all sound the same. What are your thoughts on the hip hop game today?

Too many people try to change something that is so simple, and so humble and grounded. Overexaggerating, and over-elaborating something that needs to just get back to its roots and just have a good time with it and just vibe. I mean, back in the day we never saw any such beef or - I mean, we still have some of the underlying issues such as racism and the portrayal women, but in the end of the day we have to make music that upholds and uplifts our fellow brothers and sisters.

Hip hop started out as party music. Today, a lot of the most successful ‘hip hop’ can still be considered party music. Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Flo Rida. Yet people say that hip hop is dead. Is it really that different, or has it merely evolved?

Ooh. That’s a very good question. Well, - Robust

"Mosé + The FMLY 2 Week Bender"

We could almost smell each other’s passion for music before we started talking about it.

I’ll back up before we start talking about each others scents.

Mosé and I met at our 9-5 a little over 2 weeks ago.

I quickly found out he was in a hip hop band and he knew me from my involvement with the ‘Travelling Rock Circus’ a couple years back. I won’t lie, I was a little skeptical when he said he was in a hip hop band, but as soon he listed off a few of his influences (Nas, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest) I was curious.

Nek minute, I find myself lost, late for the show, driving from @voodooink in a friends car, in the pouring rain on a Saturday night, trying to get to the @theevelynhotel. (Thanks Tom you wanker! Also check out Tom’s stuff, it’s sick at @tomroytattoos)

They had already started when I came in, soaking wet, and still getting over the heart attack I had when I couldn’t find the windscreen wipers in @majesticd123 ‘s car. Little did I know I had walked into a fucking dream. I never thought I would see a hip hop act (let alone band) of this lineup up play at local spot @theevelyn. They ran through Funky and Busty originals, a Pharrell medley, and all I could think about was how I wanted to have a house party and I wanted them to play it.

Dumbly enough though, I spent most of the time in awe with my mouth open or dancing on the dance floor that I did capture enough (and could not get enough) to write this little piece.
I told Mosé I was going to come the following week and his spot on our blog had to wait, before driving like a grandma back home, remembering windshield wipers were on the left hand side.

By the following Saturday I was almost regretting my promise to return as I lay in the back of my friend Anna’s car in absolute agony on our way to the @the_espy . Unable to move my legs due to the sport I had played earlier in 38 degree heat and hungover from the bottle of Captain Morgan I had polished off the night before. Once again Mosé + The FMLY turned my night around. I had walked in a cripple and left drunk, happy, and cured. Some would say I was healed by Funk and Hip Hop

To give you an idea the makeup of Mosé + The FMLY, here is their lineup:

Mosé: Vocals + Rhymes

Ta$h Fernando: Vocals

Drums: Loyal Tuariki

Bass: Constant Voglis

Keys: Christopher Lisati

Guitars: Droopy

‘Lisati’ and ‘Droopy’ constantly swapped between their guitars and the 3 or 4 keyboards they had set up, creating a versatility few others have live, with Droopy’s background as a Producer highly evident. ‘Constant’ and ‘Loyal Tuariki’ were the beat and bass machines behind the music, and my god live drums make a difference at a hip hop gig, simple as that. ‘Fernando’s’ vocal range added this beautiful layer of soul underneath ‘Mosé’s’ impeccable flow and hype-guy antics! Then, just when you think you’ve seen it all, ‘Lisati’ bursts out a solo with just his keys and his voice, a magnificent wailing intro.

I was then completely won over by a final tribute medley for the one and only Biggie.

I’ll just go on the record one more time to say you haven’t seen this kind of thing locally, and you should go see them while they’re still playing at this level.

Cheers guys! - Monkee Lounge

"LISTEN: MOSÉ + THE FMLY – ‘LOTUS FOWER’"

2014 saw countless successes for Melbourne hip hop artists Mosé + the FMLY. The group comprised of a six piece band fronted by rapper Mosé released two singles which not only attracted the attention of Triple J, but saw their tracks blasted across local airwaves amongst other good things.

In preparation for the group’s forthcoming EP, Mosé + the FMLY have just released a new track titled ‘Lotus Flower.’ The track embodies everything these guys are about; old school cool clashing head on with fresh, futuristic creativity and an unalterable state of chill.

And as if focusing on their own thing wasn’t enough, Mosé + the FMLY is also currently a part of the hip hop collective known as 90s RD alongside other local Melbourne acts including current ACCLAIM fave Baro.

‘Lotus Flower’ gives us a little glimpse in to what’s to come from the group that have already started 2015 off on the right foot. Listen below. - Acclaim Magazine

"Track-by-track"

Hailing from Australia’s adorned cultural hub, Melbournites, Mosé + The FMLY have recently dropped their long awaited future soul journey in the form of EP, Slow Drip. Featuring the acclaimed single, Roads it’s safe to say the honey-dipped hip hop and intergalactic synths fly side by side gracefully in Slow Drip, leaving no room whatsoever for unoriginality or mediocrity.

Slow Drip is an exploration of soul and hip-hop lyrics. With Mosé’s delicious flow, candy-sweet soundscapes and some impressive cameos, the EP can’t miss.

The band themselves couldn’t wait to drop their masterpiece and were eager to take us through the tracks in this exclusive commentary. Read and learn.

Roads
The track is a really good representation of us as a band. Its origin is in a produced beat but is 100 times better when we play live.

I C U (Passing By)
I C U is the second oldest song on the EP. It features our original drummer, Loyal Tuariki. Has some nice textures and really builds into a driving force. Lush harmonies in the hook by EMRSN.

Movie Tickets
Movie Tickets is a groove based song that blends future hip hop with an old school feel. An ode to our collective love of A Tribe Called Quest.

Chains
This tune started with the verse riff. Wanted it have a salsa/latin vibe, but after a jam it opened up into the dreamy chorus and became the heavier number we have today. Jace XL from Hiatus Kaiyote killed the hook as well.

Chill
Another older track put together around that soulful, sublime guitar line. We weren’t going to include this on the EP, but we kept playing it live and it’s too infectious not to keep.

Guns Birds
Droopy came correct with the modulating synth on this one. This track is another dreamy one with a sweet bassline and some incredible raps from the maestros N’fa and Cazeaux O.S.L.O. - Hhhhappy

"REVIEW: Mose + The FMLY Just Dropped One Wild-Ass Tape. “SLOW DRIP” Contains Both Bars And Guitars."

If RAWDIVERCITY was Odd Future, Mose + The FMLY would be The Internet. This album is tight. SLOW DRIP is not an apt title. For your regular local-rap-head the first 30s of this tape alone would probably be too much to handle. There’s nothing even close to this setup currently in the Australian hip-hop sphere.

The moment anyone gets into band-rap territory, they risk turning into a complacent funk/soul backing-group. Mose and his family are already dope in my books just for avoiding this pitfall + putting their own spin on things.

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to SLOW DRIP is: all the hard work that must’ve gone into its construction. Let’s just ignore the hours spent trying to domesticate, record & mix this exploding soul-tornado of a band for a second and focus on the songs. Tracks like “ICU” & “GUNS BIRDS“ may feel like loose jams at times, but they are actually very-deliberately structured to keep listeners engaged.

The tape peaks with rap-cuts like “Chains” where the FMLY’s backing really pushes nostalgia forward. At moments like these, Mose + The FMLY truly encapsulate that post-gospel sound… the one championed by dudes like Blood Orange & Flying Lotus until dudes like Kanye West, Chance the Rapper & Anderson Paak did it bigger and arguably better.

These guys also address a tonne of other influences/genres throughout the tape. You’ve got ode’s to N*E*R*D, Gorillaz, Jamiroquai and surely, the soundtrack to most Will Smith movies all in here. I love the fact that listening to some of these songs makes me feel like I’m 8 years old again, getting turnt to Video Hits on a Sunday morning.

Mose + The FMLY have limitless potential. “SLOW DRIP” isn’t a tape that will make them a household name but it’s an essential step forward and definitely worth listening to nonetheless.

I’m just some dude, but I’d love to see the drummer experiment when it comes to recording. Like record his track, then replace each hit with thick-ass samples or something. The live-feel is dope on this whole tape, but rap people are stubborn when it comes to drums… or production in general.

Music-fans of today value production-quality over songwriting & talent. When you play a normal person anything slightly lo-fi they don’t even hear it as music. They tune-out immediately and say “this is weird”.

We shouldn’t falsely deny the beauty of pristine, stadium-ready mastering… but there’s still something very disturbing about the fact that “technical know-how” and budget largely dictate your value as a musician in 2016.

In closing, SLOW DRIP is dope.

Bio

Crafted from long nights, excessive laughter, smoke and drink of different kinds, and a certain love that can only be found within that of a family, Melbourne's Mosé + The FMLY, are finally set to release their debut EP entitled ‘Slow Drip’. Alongside countless live shows over the last 4 years, touring and supporting some of the greatest such as Souls of Mischief, Naughty By Nature, Bad Bad Not Good, David Dallas, @peace - the FMLY have finally put pen to paper and taken their efforts into the studio to release their first offerings.

Mosé + The FMLY's combination of big beats and bass, precise samples, infectious synths and master flows, pay salute to their extensive range of influences yet allow for them to create something natural and unheard before. The 90s RD affiliates are known around Melbourne's traps for their unique sound of hip-hop, undefeated stand on social issues and their collaborative spirit.

The FMLY's live aspect has long been the cornerstone of their efforts, playing close to 300+ shows in the last 4 years, across Australia and even a run to the U.S. Most recently having played a string of festival slots such as Strawberry Fields, Beyond the Valley, By The Meadow and Marmalade Skies - the FMLY's live efforts have come unchallenged, pitting them at the top of their game.

'Slow Drip', Mosé + The FMLY's debut EP, combines the syrupy synth sound with crisp beats and enthralling bass lines. Woven together with master engineers and entirely self-written and produced, it enunciates the FMLY's presence, whilst also shedding some light as to why it has taken so long for them to release music. The EP also sees fitting collaborations with dons Jace XL (Hiatus Kaiyote), N'fa Jones and Cazeaux O.S.L.O. (Man Made Mountain, So.Crates).

'Slow Drip' is just the first step in what is building to be a stellar journey for Mosé + The FMLY.
