"Letter of Reference John Schumann"

“Moss writes and performs songs that have a little more to them than the steady diet of regurgitated emotional claptrap……” Ref: John Schumann; Composer, Performer & Writer - John Schumann

"Letter of Reference Peter Withy"

Music, marketing and Moss.

In his recent book, 1966, on music interwoven with life, Jon Savage begins with the observation of the precarious and changing nature of the world at that time and the birth of songs that were far beyond love songs and catchy hooks. Songs like Sounds of Silence, A Quiet Explosion, The War Drags On and Eve of Destruction.

In the fifty years that have followed, (with the exception of a meagre few like Midnight Oil), we have seen little of that gravitas in popular music with artists preferring egocentric tales of finding and losing love…little ditties about Jack and Dianne.

It is interesting to see the contrast at places like WOMAD where artists sing of the theft of their homelands, the breakdown of family, their declining environment, human rights and political betrayals.

As a marketer of some forty-five years experience, I believe the time is once again right for someone in this country to sing of serious issues.

Issues like violence against women in the home, coping with sudden hard times, (the quiet epidemic in our suburbs), the scourge of Ice and battling with transgender issues, of particular relevance as the debate instigated by Safe Schools continues to spread.

Moss is one such group of artists and I believe, with the right financial support and marketing input, they can take some timely and poignant messages to a world that is over Taylor Swift’s last break-up.

Modern music as art with a message has a place in our nation and Moss may be at the forefront of this movement.

"Band Happily Gathers MOSS"

Monday April 4 2016, Sam Kelton wrote:

"THE Who famously sang "I hope I die before I get old" but there's one local band that is still creating music from it's generation.

MOSS, a rock band ............ - The Advertiser "Boomers"

"Graham F Smith Peace Foundation"

“……Their performance interwove inspired lyrics with visuals and performance…….The excellent songwriting of MOSS goes straight to core of what is happening in our times. They are the modern day griots of the Western world ….. They epitomise the creative act of hope….. I would highly recommend supporting this band. They are highly creative, collaborative, and what they are saying is worth listening to.” Ref; Naomi Ebert Smith, Co-Chair, Graham F Smith Peace Foundation - Naomi Ebert Smith

"Distillery Studios, Adelaide"

“…….Projected images behind the band illustrate the subject matter of most of the songs and guide you through their journey. The music has an unapologetic hat tip to the 70’s. No bad thing and their sound and show are big enough for any arena.” Ref: Pete McLaughlin; Owner of Distillery Studios, Adelaide and veteran of the London music scene. - Pete McLaughlin

SO WHY DO WE DO THIS

We grew up in an era where songs were very much media commentary. The stage was the podium, the lyrics the speeches, as this was the only social platform for political and social voice in our early years.  We still think there is much yet to be said so we say it through our songs.  Songs with a social message continue to resonate with us.
