"SONGS OF THE SUMMER 2012: PART ONE"

With summer in full swing, we asked our Demo contributors and a variety of U of T students what song they hope will represent their four months of sun. Over the next weeks, we will share what they said.
Elena Gritzan, 3rd Year, Chemistry
Song: While the River Waits
Artist: Most People
Album: Pre-Release
The feeling of freedom and discovery that I hope my summer becomes is encapsulated in this dreamy and percussive surf-pop song by the Toronto band Most People. My discovery of their music was a happy accident back in the middle of winter (they were a part of the Wavelength festival that I religiously attended in its entirety), but I knew right away that this was exactly the kind of music that I would want to be listening to during my four months of warm weather. Watching them play live, their passion for playing music is readily apparent; which is exactly what I want to capture over the next few months: I want to push myself to succeed in my research position, I want to explore and immerse myself in the local music scene, and I want to listen to songs that wash over you with fun bass lines and layers of harmonies. But, above all, I want to embrace the world with the same passion that I see in Most People. - Hearthouse Demo.

"Wavelength 12: Night four in review Wavelength 12: Night four in review"

Sunday night opened up with Most People, easing us into the evening with a relaxing cruise into a world of sonic sprawl and electronic beats. These bearded voyagers and their trusty laptop cover such diverse musical territory in each song that their tracks feel like they could stretch out across an entire long weekend. Fans of Braids' neo-psychedelia and ambient electronic sounds should start forming a long and meandering line now. - BlogTO

"Wavelength 12 Festival: Day Four"

The first band of the night, two-piece Most People, was a very pleasant surprise for me. They loop guitar, bass and percussion, as well as playing sounds from a laptop, to create dreamy pop. The set both began and ended with some “oohs” and was catchy as anything. They were giving away free demos at the show (you can download the same demo for free at their bandcamp page), and it has been on repeat for me all morning. Their psychedelic pop translates well in the studio, although a lot of the fun is watching them build the layers and see how two people can create such a sound. They are definitely my favourite discovery from the past four days. - Greyowl Point

"The Wavelength 12th Anniversary Festival preview"

"Those worried that Wavelength Twelve's last outing will be hard-edged affair need not fret, as the festival's final night also includes a diverse assortment of bands. Both Most People and Motëm bring their own brands of evocative electronic music to the mix..." - BlogTO

"Get in the Know: Wavelength 12th Anniversary Festival"

"NIGHT 4 @ THE GARRISON – 9pm (1197 Dundas St. W.)
TOP PICK: Most People — Minimalist electronica

Even though Toronto-based Most People only have a two-song demo up so far, we’re liking what we hear and are looking forward to seeing what their live show has to offer. Based around heavy guitar-bass and electronic foundation, we suspect there will be some looping and synth-style vocals." - Syncopated Sound

"Wavelength Music Series, Most People"

Most People are two line cooks in a kitchen of wires and pedal inputs, they resemble a couple of sailors moving to and fro over and around the catamaran, twisting and pulling and plugging in out and up, mixing and twirling and conjuring sound adventures like salads of fancy lettuces and corn salsa. From a distance the catamaran leans and swoons elegantly along the surface of the waves, turning with the current and ignoring the crests of the waves, while up close the crew of duality lunges and lurches madly about behind the scenes. Most People create a sound that is bigger than the sum of its parts and greater than the age of the players. Their music captures the rambunctiousness of youth and channels the sublime leisure of old age in a rocker. Suitable for swaying and dancing. - Doc Pickles - Wavelength - Doc Pickels

"Band Watch: MOST PEOPLE"

Indie psych-pop duo Most People is a new project from Torontonians Brandon DeGroote and Paul McEachern. Based around a guitar/bass foundation, they also implement programmed electronics, double-drumming, and harmonied vocals into their live stage act – which with all of that going on at once, it makes for a pretty interesting show for sure.

They’ve only got a two-song demo up online so far, and you can download it for FREE over on their Bandcamp page. We definitely recommend checking out Wanna Walk Away.

Stay tuned for more from this promising two-some… until then, check out some more Most People in the embed below – or hey! Check them out at an upcoming show. - The Indie Machine

"The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Butterfly Knife"

Most People - Brandon DeGroote and Paul McEachern - are one of those bands to get really excited about. "Don't Wanna Walk Away" uses ornate instrumentation and cleverly textured arrangements, its unpredictability always meant to set off emotions. - BlogTO

"Most People - The Tiger Bar"

Glowing with underground flair, Most People provided the soundtrack for arty-experimental-pop goodness. Delivering a kaleidoscopic, rhythmic sound that careened between psych-pop jangle and spacey instrumental passages, this guitar-and-bass duo also cycled through programmed electronics, double-drumming, and harmony-drenched vocals. Striving for the avant-garde without abandoning all sense melody, incense-filled or hallucinogenic (take your pick) it all makes sense. - Lonely Vagabond - Exclaim! Network

Bio

Our performance is designed to be both interesting to listen to and interesting to watch. We change instruments frequently and float between the use of electronic drums and live percussion.

Both of us have a kick drum pedal in front and a high hat which is typically used to drive the beat. We also use sampled loops of our primary instruments at times to give us the freedom to create a fuller beat. All of this is done with the help of ableton live, which is controlled and manipulated using a midi foot controller.

We try to present a good balance of tension and release throughout the act. This is done by organizing each of our songs to melt into the next one giving the performance a steady output of sounds.

Finally, our underlying "vibe" is that of imagination and fun.
