"Mother Gun “Human” EP review"

Recorded live in the Granada studio of British producer Harold Burgon these twenty minutes remind me of bars and beer, the things that I love. No less so than listening to ROCK (in capital letters) with influences of the stoner sound on Cool To Hate, Mother gun has got me in their pocket, although curiously In the Storm sounds more grouchy, in the style of Kurt Cobain, with its grunge influence and fascinating melodies that also remind me of The Smashing Pumpkins.

I have now listened to various records recorded in this way and I find it curious how much it captures my attention when its done by a producer who knows what they are doing. Human has already taken its place as the best recording of 2013. Ive already put it on my favourites list and if I have to remove anything, it will be something else that gets kicked off. This mini CD stays, come what may, and I am now going to search out their previous recording Fall Around.

That natural sound (the bass is a delight) is heard again in Glory Hope. I love how they have done the mixes, no instrument is placed on top of another and there is a clarity in Glory Hope of almost pop melodies that get stuck in your head,. It shows courage when a band is not afraid to include anything that sounds good. Then again the stoner sound wins out in Rebel with crafted guitars that make you hum along till the finish and a solo that absolutely fits in.

The final song All that Remains is another track with a distinct character, familiar and soothing with good English pronunciation, like the sixth track… Theres no sixth track? Well, put it back on again from the beginning. And, as I dont like to write just to wind you up, this time only I will leave a link to the Mother Gun website.

A visit to their band camp page is all that it takes to download their EP….. or buy it. Mother Gun deserve to be watched with more than a passing interest.

"Review “Human” April 2013"

Mother gun is a band from Granada that formed in spring of 2011 by four musicians well known on the Granada rock scene. The group consists of Fernando Carmona (vocals and guitar), Daniel Ruiz (drums), Victor Ortiz (guitar) y Fran Ruiz (bass), have just released their new EP Human, their second recording in just under a year.

Since their formation the band has found their own personal style with influences from the 90s grunge scene, and the stoners of Palm Springs ( California), albeit with sufficient character to incorporate rhythms belonging to the 70s or extravagant and sophisticated sonic landscapes, mixing the experimental with the progressive. The result of this is their own potent sound, characterised by the groove of the drums, the relentless bass lines and the intense ruthless guitar riffs. A compendium of sound, live and free, finding its own way.

In the summer of 2011 Mother Gun recorded their first Ep Fall Around, which would serve as a calling card for the media and the live music scene in Spain, and would take them to the UK in the summer of 2012. There the band would visit cities such as Bath and Bristol and would get a great reception from the British press.

Right now the group have just finished recording their latest Ep Human, recorded and produced by the British producer Harold Burgon.

"Grunge review December 19th 2012"

There are people who prefer to play it safe, if something works then carry on doing the same. Also there are those who always try to emulate current sounds, as if this, in itself, guarantees success. Mother Gun seem to have not understood this very well because they have not repeated the formula of their first recording the EP Fall Around that everyone loved so much, nor do they sound contemporary. Human is the absolute opposite. Their latest 5 track EP sounds as if it were made decades ago (a grand production by Harold Burgon), belonging to another style very different from the 90s rock sound we were presented with earlier this year on the aforementioned Fall Around.

It is important to compare both releases, because Human is bursting with details that were missing in Fall Around from the guitar arrangements to the drum solo introduction, the fat bass and 70s sound. There is no hurry on Human everything develops slowly and at its own pace, like the hypnotising In the Storm where a subtle guitar dominates, overlaid with a melody that is another surprise for the listener, a new and totally different register for the singer Fernando (is it really him or have they got a new front man?) moving away from the earlier shouts and growls. The impact of the first listen creates a resonance between the quality and harmony that a singer songwriter with a tortured soul, from two decades ago, delivers. You only need to listen to Glory Hope to become totally captivated with his almost faint rasp, which sounds so good.

On Human they escape from their more recognisable and underlying influences, pausing for a while to create an alternative to the bands that could be said to always sound the same. See if you can hear how their sound has evolved from the original live All That Remains (which at last has been recorded in the studio) that sounds so different to the version they are now performing live, in only a few months. Yes they have slowed down the rpm and have given a vintage touch to their rich’n’roll gamble, and they known how to achieve this in only 5 songs.

Each track, whether it is guitar, drums, bass or vocals, are revitalised by the influences of yesterday (although this may sound utopian). With shorter songs than were on Fall Around they create something even better in less time, which is a great achievement. It’s frustrating that the songs come to us in dribs and drabs in the form 2 EP’s, because whoever says ‘there are no decent groups nowadays’ has not been around the underground music scene and found Mother Gun, and other bands like them, who have restored our faith in Rock Music.

"Piorno Festival 2013. Published: June 16th. 2013"

Every night has its highlights and that night the climax was the appearance on stage of Mother Gun. Were talking about a local group which is already well known at all the venues in Granada and that have been promoting their E.P. Human, a recording that has assured them a place in the music scene and taken by force that, without a doubt, will serve as a stepping stone when they decide to start their next recording, already glimmering in the distance.
They are also a powerful band that despite the young age of its members, has an incredible and forceful stage presence. If youve already seen them live on stage you know what I am talking about but hearing them on the Piorno Festival stage, with all its potential, strictly speaking you can say they have their own Gun sound, capable of making the ground move to the rhythm of Danni’s drums, to Fran Ruizs fingers plucking his bass and the two great guitar players Victor Ortiz and Fernando Carmona, who also provides the groups vocals adding yet more character and a distinct sound. This group knows how to put on a show.

"Band Spotlight Mother Gun"

Some of you may be wondering how or I pick my music for HardlineMX, or older videos that I have posted on the web. To answer that question, I would have to be in the exact same mood, and frame of mind that I was during video creation. I tend to be as random with my song selection, as I am with what color shirt I want to wear any given day.
In the end, spending time seeking out music always tends to turn into a huge time vampire, which fiendishly sucks away much of my editing time. I constantly run into music I absolutely hate, too much rap, bad language, or just too random for my tastes (or for our audience). Because of this, I tend to seek out either bands, or DJs that offer up a catalogue of music that is both Creative Commons (Providing License for us to use freely), as well as freely available for our audience to purchase, or download themselves. One such band that has fit all of this criteria, has been Mother Gun.

For me recently, finding a great rock band outside of the US is becoming quite common, and this group from Spain is no exception. Their songs have fit the bill for quite a few of my videos, including some of the higher profile edits we have featured here on HardlineMX. Its rare for me to find a Band that has more than one song I really like, with Mother Gun, I have to say, that isnt an issue at all. They have a fresh style that keeps me listening, with great vocals, and guitar work that I would compare to some of my favorite songs in my existing sound catalogue.
With most of their songs being either Creative Commons, or otherwhise easy to acquire on various stores, please show your support for them as well as HardlineMX. This band, is both aware of HardlineMX, as well as being in full support of our cause of getting Riders in our area noticed!

"Buzzlovers (Nirvana tribute) + Mother Gun, Planta Baja 20/4/13"

Mother Gun, a group from Granada, began their show full of confidence (not least as their video Cool To Hate has spent weeks being shown daily on MTV y Sol Musica to much acclaim, (as has their new EP ) and appear more and more in-charge on the stage of the Sala ‘Planta Baja’ (now their second home). The novelty this time was that the audience (without a doubt all very young) responded with the same intensity as the band played, so it was gratifying to see them pogoing to Cool To Hate, and Fall Around before the incredulous gaze of the musicians themselves. This is fun, this is giving and receiving.

One after another they blasted songs from their new EP as well as their from their previous EP Fall Around and a version of Go With The Flow, which they recorded this year and they even played a song that was only a few weeks old, just the right amount of time to have us domesticated before being joined on stage by The Buzzlovers. 10 performers, including Fernando, Victor, Danny and Fransisco enjoying themselves and giving out the warmth that comes from performing their songs. Awesome !!

Bio

Mother Gun is an ‘Indie’ rock band, formed in Granada, Spain in May 2011.
The group is a collaboration of Fernando Carmona; vocals/guitar (previously with ‘After Prozac’) Victor Ortiz; vocals/guitar & Daniel Ruiz; drums (previously with Badda) and Francisco Ruiz; bass guitar (previously with Los Cangrejos). Since their first jam, they realized that they had many ideas in common and this cemented the character of their music with powerful riffs and a lysergic/progressive dance ethic. Their favourite musical influences are from the 90’s (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Radiohead) and 70’s psychedelic rock.

Their first, self-produced, EP “Fall Around” was launched in November 2011 with a gig in ‘La Planta Baja’ in Granada. The audience response was phenomenal and good press reviews helped them gain further concerts in Spain and in June 2012 they were invited by Soul Design (clothing manufacturer) to play 2 concerts in Bristol, England and the audience reaction was ecstatic. In October 2012 they recorded a second EP “Human” co-produced with Harold Burgon at his studio in Granada. ‘Human’ was released by Aneurisma Records (Almeria) on December 2nd 2012.The opening track of Human is "Cool to Hate" and the promo video for this song was broadcast by MTV Europe during the spring of 2013. In March 2013 Mother Gun played a show in Granada supporting the U.S. group ‘The Meat Puppets’ and both groups became friends. Mother Gun hope to support them on their Spanish tour in 2014. This July they recorded two tracks for their forthcoming first ‘single’ release. They plan to record their first LP in November 2013. Mother Gun is under selection for a showcase gig at SXSW (Austin,Texas U.S.A.) in 2014.
