"Mountain Cult - Self released EP"

The trouble with the never ending onslaught of great singles out there is that it's easy to get behind on posts and end up missing the release party of this single from Mountain Cult that happened right before the holidays at Pianos, which after hearing the first track on the A-Side, I'm regretting already.
This sludgy, buried under reverb, raw feel has elements of The Sentiment Club or the German Measles re-imagined no-wave sound with a classic Stooges stripped down garage, dirty soul. Maybe it's the growly bass fuzz on "Christmas Day" over the low end squeal of Ben's guitar work, along with his lackadaisical whispery delivery...in the abstract way where the vocals are secondary to the overall sound. I tried to listen for some kind of holiday lyric like a maniac.
They've decided to find a ballsy, earthquake riff for "2pm special", becoming all about the sustained distortion ringing out between slow chords, slightly out of time with each other...it's the best thing to hear, when the core of the track is this decisive. They're just completely focused on pure, distilled, sludgy stoner jams right before things historically went punk and then faster and faster.
"Mailman" the third track on this side (!) starts to pick up with a melody, and the heavy echo on Ben's vocal along with the heavy delay on everything is almost getting into a JAMC type of layered distortion...it definitely doesn't sound like this was recorded on an old 4-track. There's just the right amount of sloppiness here, like Los Llamaradas, there's a core of authenticity in going for this sincere reworking of those sounds and they're nailing it. Like Earth, getting as slow as possible, and then adding the punk anarchy...really, it's exactly like what I like about the Stooges, only mellow. I don't think Ben's going to be smearing peanut butter on himself. Does it need to be that uncomfortable anymore? Does music need that kind of masochistic performance art? Anyway, who knows, it could have been a messed up release party...

The B-Side opens with "Dog Specimen", I'm getting the sense that they all know their parts, they've all rehearsed them, but they don't necessarily have to come together exactly, and that's why I love what they're going for, it's almost the approximation of a song, nearly conceptual in that way. Here's all the pieces, you get the idea, we're going to slow this way down, and keep it simple...the spirit is all there and I'm glad to hear they're taking it to it's logical extreme, like the last track, "Friends" which could be The Mekons and Dirty Beaches collaborating on quaaludes.

Go check this out on their bandcamp page, then go make these guys rich and pony up $4 bucks. - 7 Inches

"Guest Post ep2 + 7? of Love ep 5"

I should really cut down on the amount of posts with episodic titles… bloody confusing. Anyway, here’s a post Keith did for Tuning Into Obscure that fits in the 7? of Love series.

Artist: Mountain Cult

Title: s/t EP

Released: December 2011, vinyl 7” released on Dec 14th

Label: Puppet Combo

Format: 7” (free digital download via Bandcamp)

Genre: Punk, psyche blues, lo fi

Mountain Cult is a brand new group that sprouted out of the streets of Brooklyn this February. Despite being recorded so close to the birth of the band and with the running time of an average sitcom episode, this EP features a signature sound that comes off as one that is well formed and completely solid. If you take the raw dirtiness of the blues guitar work from The Black Keys and burry it in the ground with Blue Cheer’s most sludgy moments and let it ferment for several months until it pulls its decaying self u[ through the soil back to the surface, then you have the basic sound of Mountain Cult. They certainly exist in the world of the bands that they have previously opened for or are inspired by: X-Ray Eyeballs, The Stooges, Royal Baths, Cream, Easter Vomit, Queening, The Velvet Underground, The Boom Bang, etc. Another one of the reasons that they have achieved the sound that they have acquired is due to recording their music onto an old 4-track analogue tape machine.

Each song features a similar aesthetic but without becoming dull or redundant. It’s like hearing Mountain Cult at one of their gigs; each song is within the same general atmosphere but they’re all still individual enough to keep the audience entertained. In each song, the vocals take on a strange dream like quality by being wonderfully obscured with lo-fi murkiness and cave-like reverb. The entire recording is crisp with low fidelity sound quality, which in some circumstances could deter most listeners, yet it compliments each song by building a moist and warm atmosphere that cannot be duplicated digitally. The fact that this release is issued on a seven-inch piece of vinyl only adds more warmth and life to the recordings. The EP has some tasty pop rock like hooks, which can lure in most fans of punk and rock but without losing its individualistic vision. Basically the music here is brooding, dark and acidic (just like a good cup of coffee), but at the same time it can be downright danceable (albeit, some tracks would be better suited for slow dancing). I would expect this release to be enjoyed by fans of punk, acid-tinged hard rock and fuzzy blues-rock. I believe that through its crispy lo-fi blues sound and DIY punk like attitude and packaging, this EP could very well be a stand out release for the end of 2011.

"Mountain Cult - NYC's Anti-Christ(mas) - release EP at Pianos on 12.14"

Here at The Deli we always feel a little uncomfortable when we see indie bands write songs about Christmas - maybe because we don't perceive rock'n'roll as a very Christmas-y musical genre. By definition poor, dirty, and allergic to hypocrisy, rock music doesn't really need to try and exploit this uber-commercial holiday to lure new listeners. Unless you do it the way emerging lo-fi band Mountain Cult did it in this song called "Christmas Day" (streaming below). We are not sure what the slurred lyrics say here, but we can deduct they aren't about anything that's even remotely pretty - we actually had to "censor" the song's cut and paste video, which was submitted to our open blog, for excessively gory content... For a band that sounds like early Ween's evil cousins, or an electric version of seminally depressed electro NYC band from the 70s Suicide, a Christmas song is the perfect paradox. We recommend Mountain Cult to send this track + video to Fox News - which, as usual, in the month of December is looking for a new Anti-Christ(mas) to expose and condemn. HUGE potential for promotionl!!! Mountain Cult will release their debutself titled EP at Pianos on December 14 - The Deli Magazine

"03 April 2011 MOUNTAIN CULT"

A SHORT DEMO AND A SHORT BLURB

Mountain Cult, from Brooklyn NY, mixes the pleasurable sounds of blues, grunge, and trash to give you their current two-song demo that includes 'medical waste' and 'overachiever.' They play a bit slow and lazy-like; at certain points it makes you wonder whether or not these kids can play instruments (but of course they can!) Though there are only two tracks for your auditory pleasure, it is certain that the direction they are going is good enough to keep some of you sticking around and waiting for the next release.

Mountain Cult started jamming in February. Maria had just moved from japan, DD never played drums before and Ben acquired a fuzz face. The Stooges, Cream, and Velvet Underground are big influences. They've opened for Royal Baths, X-ray Eyeballs, The Boom Bang, Easter Vomit, and Queening. Their first EP, recorded on an old 4 track, straddles the line between fuzzed out blues and punk. - Know Your Conjurer

"11/18/2011 Mountain Cult - EP [2011]"

Really cool EP full of psychedelic fuzzed out bluesy noise rock. Update: Now in 160kbps! Distorted to give it that lo-fi garage rock feel. Here is a picture of the band (Click it (lulzimg.com jpeg). - Keep Gem

"11/27/2011 Mountain Cult - Live at Pianos 7?/?20 [2011]"

Very cool live recording by noise rock/garage rock band Mountain Cult. Slow psychedelic experimental rock with plenty of lo-fi fuzzed out post-punk and distorted guitars with some blues thrown in. The punk like vocals and rolling bass lines fit well in the mix well. The drumming and the rest reminds me of Young Widows or Melvins. Highly Recommended. - Keep Gem

"Review by Pequenos Classicos Perdidos"

- Pequenos Classicos Perdidos

Bio

Mountain Cult was formed in early 2011 in Brooklyn, NY. Influenced by the The Birthday Party, Iggy Pop, 13th Floor Elevators and other 60s psychedelic bands, the band's sound is minimal and raw. The lead bass is striking against the ethereal guitar. The drumming hails to the Mo Tucker standing style of drumming, notable for the distinct lack of cymbals and bass drum. The recordings were all done on a 4-track cassette.
