"MouseAbout cd Review"

MouseAbout hails from the indie music hotbed of Austin Texas. On their MySpace page the band list under their musical influences as everyone from , The Beatles, pink Floyd, and AC/DC, to Johnny Cash, Elliot Smith, and Public Enemy. As you might imagine with such an eclectic list their music is very hard to pigeonhole into one particular style.

I could hear everything from alternative, rock, 60's pop, punk, ska, and jazzin the songs. The one constatnt that runs through the whole release though was a moody untertone. I'm not sure exactly what it's from. Maybe its the deep vocal tones or the unusal sounds found in some of the songs.

This self titled release from MouseAbout does a really nice job of mixing styles to create their own sound and kept the songs sounding fresh. Being an old trumpeter I also enjoyed the trumpet work found on several of the songs provided by Steven Welch.

This Band has a bit of an offbeat side that comes through in the song lyrics. On their MySpace site when answering the question what their music sounds like they gave the answer,"Like Garbage, not the band."

If you have a desire for something a little bit off the beaten music path, with an edge of quirkiness, then MouseAbout's self titled release is for you.

"MouseAbout"

MouseAbout is a band that has a sound of simplicity no matter how complex the music may get. With mellow, yet effective drum beats, quirky vocals and an eclectic assortment of horn and synthesizer sounds, the band creates a patchwork collection of songs on their 2007 self titled album. Vocalist, guitarist and keyboard player, Peter O'Dowd, touches on a number of interesting subjects such as our Television crazed country, political obscurity and the glitz of Los Angeles, with lyrics that are subtle in delivery, yet poignant in meaning. Drummer Shane Kullberg, holds it down while also adding vocals and Jon Cassibry plays bass with Steven Welch on strategically placed trumpet notes.

Different styles and speeds mixed with the synthesizer sounds and trumpet, give the album a vibe of a Beck record without the samples. "TV Nation," starts with a swing beat on the ride cymbal, and a Stray Cats vibe, only to swith into a slow, Mexican mariachi style jam. "Only U," rolls along with a smooth beat and synth sounds in the beginning, switching to a 6/8 and then 3/4 time signature in the chorus. On "Leave Yourself Behind Now," the band's hippie sound comes out, and you can feel the summer of love resonating out of the speakers.

On this eleven song collection, MouseAbout leaves you wondering as much about their music as you may be about their name. Wondering in a good way though, and that is the talent of the band. With meaningful lyrics and multiple sytles done in an understated way, MouseAbout gets in touch with their futeristic hippie love child.

Bio

MouseAbout formed in March of 2005 in Austin Texas. Songwriter and guitarist Peter O'Dowd and drummer Shane Kullberg had previously shared the stage in Austin band Murfph. John Cassibry adds a deep pocket groove on bass and Sean Friend rounds out the sound on guitar and lap steel. Entering their eleventh year together, having played hundreds of shows and countless hours rehearsing and refining their sound, they have achieved a chemistry and ensemble that really comes through on stage and in their recordings.  MouseAbout has released a self titled debut(2007), Shades of Blue (2010),  Unusual Delusion (2015), and Ennui (2016). The music is a genre jumping mix of rock, pop, punk, jazz, and polka. They have been featured on 90.5 FM KUT "The Laurie Show", on Unsigned Rock Zone Podcast (episode 30) , Ourobouros podcast (UK), Break Thru Radio (River Runs Red podcast), and at Waterloo Records "Hear Texas Here" listening Stations. Tight vocal harmonies are a trademark to the MouseAbout sound. MouseAbout's broad musical collage makes it nearly impossible to pin their sound to any particular genre.  They pride themselves on pushing the musical envelope and not having every song sound the same.

"These guys have a way with controlled chaos and glorious guitar hooks that remind me of the Pixies.  MouseAbout is the ultimate Austin slacker noisy pop band"

Rick McNulty - KUT 90.5FM Austin
