"Playback St. Louis"

Supercrush CD Release Party
Off Broadway, October 9

There wasn’t a lot of elbow room at Off Broadway the night of Supercrush’s self-titled CD release party. Supercrush rounded out an unbeatable lineup for fans of local power pop. Truly, it was heartening to see such a large crowd in support of local music. Supercrush put on a true rock show, complete with scantily clad women (wearing Supercrush girlie tees, no less), dry ice, and black lights. The band took the stage to a cacophony of cheers and applause as overhead played AC/DC’s “For Those About To Rock.” About to? Hell, Supercrush did rock.

SUPERCRUSH: SUPERCRUSH (Self-Released)

Orange Crush has never been one of my favorite drinks. In fact, I can vividly recall drinking a can of it at a picnic when I was a child and then throwing up under a tree. Luckily, the Supercrush CD has a far happier ending and is much easier to develop a taste for. “Awake,” the final track of the recording, is a great example of this St. Louis band’s work. It has the right hooks and melody that a laidback, guitar pop band can hope for. Ryan Hoelting sings in a great, melodic vocal style that can be hard to come by. While I’m a bit surprised by the choice to put such a great song at the very end of the disc, this is not to say that other songs don’t stand out as well. “Weekend Friend” has a memorable hook, and “Walk Away” is another strong track. This band is a nice part of the St. Louis music scene, and if people check out the CD, they are not likely to turn it off and walk away disappointed. (JK)

Supercrush: Supercrush

If I were a teenage girl, Supercrush would be my new favorite band. NO JOKE. I'm serious, I know the live show is no bitch. If you want girls, go to a Supercrush show. How do I know? Peep the girl on the front cover. I got $15 on it that they have them in droves. Sh%$t, I bet they even sell them. For real. True pimps man, true pimps. As for the music, if you like poppy-punk rock type Emo...this CD is for you. I very highly recommend this CD. -JO - John O'Neil

Bio

Formerly SUPERCRUSH, Movie Star Kiss picks up where Supercrush left off. One of Supercrush's biggest accomplishments was a spot on 2004's Pointfest, St. Louis' annual all day music festival featuring the hottest rock bands of today. Supercrush played before thousands of fans that were there to see bands such as Lit, Sugarcult, Story of the Year, Papa Roach, Von Bondies, and Breaking Benjamin. This was also one of the last shows played under the name Supercrush.
Now based in Los Angeles, this rock band has often been compared to such acts as Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, and the Foo Fighters. Christina Saraceno from RollingStone.com said, "Supercrush keep it simple, building on everything you like about emo...saving all its fury for the guitar rock heavy, sing-along chorus." With two full length CD’s under their belt, Movie Star Kiss not only delivers the goods in the studio, but in their live show as well. "Supercrush put on a true rock show..," said Laura Hamlett of Playback St. Louis.
Supercrush was formed in 1998 and after only a few months together the band was playing a regular schedule of live shows, recorded a 2-song demo, and soon developed a following. In July 2001, Supercrush was named as an alternate for The American Music Awards® Presents The Coca-Cola New Music Award Competition. Supercrush's song "The Real You" enjoyed a 3-week reign as champion of WVRV's (101.1 FM) The River's Home Grown Challenge, was named the Home Grown Artist of the month, and has been The River's Home Grown Featured Artist on several occasions. The song "Weekend Friend" was the winner of WVRV's Musical Court, a segment where listeners call in and vote whether they like the song or not. The same song was featured on XM Unsigned Satellite Radio's most played list for the month of July. Another song, "See You", enjoyed steady airtime on KNSX, 93.3 FM.
Today, Movie Star Kiss is focused on promoting their newly released 2nd full length CD entitled “Starting Over”. WVRV 101.1FM The River and KPNT 105.7 The Point in St. Louis are currently airing "These Days”, “Getaway" and "Alicia", songs featured on the band’s new CD. XM Radio is also airing “Alicia” and “Let It Ride”. Since moving to Los Angeles, the band is looking forward to hitting the California circuit and will continue to perform shows on a regular basis to support the new CD.
