"Album Review"

It was three years ago I first introduced Moxine so it is pleasure to have a chance to jot some thoughts on their latest release that opens with Tropical Storm which has a jazz feel to it inside elegantly delayed guitars. There is a more confident stride which is immediately a marker to Hot December.

Following with Pretend We’re Cool and the tempo is lifted by a rattling work-out of the drums which maintain their relentless pace thorough a blues rock number. Just two tracks in a and it is evident that Moxine has not been sitting idly over the past three years as the music has a superb control, whilst the verve and panache is given space to be heard.
About Us – is of a different texture entirely as a melodic rock gives full flight to the lyric which soars around the instruments, a sonically well developed piece of music.

Make These Days takes the dirty rock bass-lines I particularly liked when I heard the band three years ago and adds a brand new dimension to the original sounds I knew. Whilst this is all of a far higher quality it hasn’t lost the core excitement that is essential within the context of a rock band and continues to work well in my ears.

A somewhat different feel is heard in Hurt You, in which the sounds are more echoed giving the listener a sense of a much wider sound, whilst the melodic textures are not lost in the breadth as they deploy more dramatic tempo changes to develop the story-line.

She’s Never Ever deploys the guitars in their full glory, whilst a thumping percussion hammers a solid line that is joined by an equally definitive bass. As I mentioned in my first review, there is a distinct radio friendly sound to the material, but for those of us who enjoy the edges more scuffed, Moxine maintain a style that has more than enough to engage.

Bringing the Brazilian influences slightly forward with Sexy Girls, the whole sound takes on a club dance feel as the band delve into a more resonating emotive context as a funk guitar plays against a soul beat bass-line.

Beautiful Wings finds the vocal once again melting like whispers in the ears, caressing the listener with breathy air kisses and the band have successfully taken the whole LP up another notch, from an already high bar.

Melt This Love opens with a sound that could have come straight out of CBGBs as the powerful use of bass thrusts into the room and to me releases the pick of the LP with it more gruff powerful delivery.

The penultimate track is Nasty – not that wasn’t a description, but a title. Moxine provide a new flavour to the sound as emphasis lays with a double-time bass drum which creates a sense of foreboding as the track gathers momentum, keeping the listener on tenterhooks. A delightful piece of music.

Concluding with Baby Baby, the only song I have ever heard Monica sing in Portuguese and and a good indicator that Moxine has developed the self-confidence to really mark their territory out on the International Stage.

A well produced LP, Hot December explores a diversity of moods which during the whole play keeps the listener engrossed. Currently planning on a return back to the UK in May 2013, they are also looking for a UK booker – if anyone is interested please drop me a note to tim @ indiebandsblog.com. - Emerging Indie Bands (UK)

Bio

Moxine is a disco rock shake-your-ass in the garage band from Sao Paulo based in LA. With sick guitar riffs, the lead singer and guitarist Monica Agena, along with her partners, have been tearing up the underground scene of Brazil over the past years. The trio fuses today's modern dance rock sound with a fierce sense of melody and savory rhythms.

The band came on the scene in 2009 with the release of their debut EP "Electric Kiss". With only 4 very unique tracks, the trio fused the danceable beats of modern rock with melodies reminiscent of mainstream pop. "Good Choice" is a perfect example of their panache.

The EP caught the attention of some influential folks, and shortly thereafter, the band began a string of shows - from the alternative circuit in Sao Paulo to a variety of international festivals such as SXSW and Liverpool Sound City.
