"Live at Canada Day REVIEW"

Live at Canada Day REVIEW by David Fyfe - Northern Soul DJ, Kelowna BC
In the spirit of the northern soul scene Mr M and the All Nighters have captured the essence of what it is to be a soul band; simply put 100% pure energy. It's all here, A power vocal of Aretha Franklin, a brass style of the Bar Kays and that Hammond beat that takes me back to the sound of Stax records and the mastermind behind the band Jimmie Rabbit Himself (They call him Mr). Mr M has a knowledge base that would equal any Wigan Casino DJ.The band has that feel good sound about them - they combine the sound of summer and the sound of Motown just needed if you want a night out. This is the band to see. This cd will have you dancing in your living room wishing you were Jackie Wilson or The Supremes and there based right here in East Vancouver.

Straight forward "live" recording of 19 r&b classics such as "Get Ready" (The Temptations original), "I Can't Stand the Rain," (Ann Peebles). A few liberties are taken such as nine minutes of "Move On Up" (The Impressions). C+

"University of British Columbia Student Paper"

Mr M and the All Nighters took the stage and played a great set of soul, funk, and r & b music, and covered a couple songs too including "Tainted Love" with success. The band had a unique setup with 3 singers that interestingly all had very different voices. Mr M and the All Nighters were able to sound great even without having to stick to this traditional formula maybe in part because of the kind of music they were playing. Their instrumentals sounded great too, and it kept the audience dancing throughout the set.

CANADA'S NORTHERN SOUL REVIVAL BAND ROCKS THE BBC

Mr M & The All Nighters are Canada's Northern Soul revival band and in the last few months have been featured on numerous BBC radio shows [Craig Charles and Mary Fox]

Founded in September 2006 and inspired by the Wigan Casino scene circa 73-81; the band plays classic stompin' Northern Soul in the British tradition [uptempo/upbeat]. The music is instantly recognisable, uplifting and inspirational.

In 2002 founding member Ian Gregson returned home to Wigan for a school reunion. The DJ hired for the event was none other than legendary Northern Soul DJ Russ Winstanley. After chatting together and returning home to Vancouver Ian read Russ's book "Soul Survivors" Ian decided to form his own band and name it Mr M & The All Nighters in tribute to the legendary Wigan Casino.

The name Mr M & The All Nighters is derived from the "all-nighters" that occurred at Wigan Casino from 1973-1981. Mr M's was a side room of Wigan Casino dedicated to rare oldies, named after the Casino manager, the late Gerry Marshall.

For those unfamiliar with the style - Northern Soul is a form of music that get's people dancing, categorised in the late 60's by a London record shop owner, it put a name to the type of soul music favoured by northern English record collectors in search of the best soul music.

Today, Northern Soul is seeing a major resurgence across Europe, the UK and North America. Currently, there are two soon to be released movie productions in the works, both dedicated to the glory days of Wigan Casino. There are numerous radio shows dedicated to Northern Soul including Mary Fox on BBC Radio Stoke and the Craig Charles Funk and Soul show on BBC Radio 6 [both have played Mr M and The All Nighters] . Northern Soul continues to inspire performers ranging from Soft Cell, The Jam/Paul Weller, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse and many more.

Released in August 08 the debut Mr M & The All Nighters CD contains rare and popular classic soul tracks, including the quintessential soul classics Tainted Love, Do I Love You and Move On Up. This independently released and limited edition CD is still available through CD Baby and the Mr M & The All Nighters web site.

Mr M & The All Nighters are currently recording live studio sessions for an upcoming release in the Spring of 2009; some of which can be heard on their myspace page.
