One of the most dynamic frontmen of the 90s has become one of the most vibrant solo performers of this strange new little century. NME called it “the rebirth of a gothic Elvis.” They were right. Mr Solo has arrived.
Mikey Georgeson’s latest alter-ego is at once cabaret and new-wave, glam-rock smashed into
turn-of-the-(previous)-century end-of-pier entertainment.
As ‘The Vessel’, lead singer/ringmaster of David Devant And His Spirit Wife, he is loved by fans for the eloquence of his lyrics, beautiful melodies and exuberant pop. Mr Solo is, if it’s possible, even more fascinating than his alter-alter ego.
Mr Solo’s live shows – which combine
‘state-of-the-art’ VJ mixing/magic lantern projections (including sing-along lyrics) with live dance routines – are in turn heart-wrenching and daft, as Mr Solo, half performer, half human installation contraption struts his
impressive stuff. But there is something about the music that, even without all the stagey
glitz, reaches just as far into your heart.
It is in turn romantic and rude, dark and dazzling – in Mr Solo’s own words, it is “blowing away the nihilistic, sexless cynicism of white indie-boy guitar wank... I do think sex is largely overlooked in indie pop and it’s always there in my tunes somehow or another.”
