"Talent Search Stories"

Lilith Fair featuring Sarah Mclachlan, Sheryl Crow in downtown Denver, on the hip Market Street, lie The Soiled Dove, one of the area's premiere singer/songwriter clubs.

Although it showcases mainly rock acts, by the looks of the flasy "Soiled Dove" sign and brick walls, you would think you would hear some jazz or possibly even a comedian.

Nevertheless, this was a perfect place for a full house to view the finalists of the Denver Talent Search.

The diversity of the evening's performers was especially apparent in grand prize winnder Melanie Susuras' (whose grandmother was in the crowd) strong vocal performance reminded me of Martina McBride.

"Digital City"

These days, Lilith Fair may be just another chapter in rock history, but Denver still reaps the benefits from the women’s rock festival, as its “discoveries” are still rocking the Mile High Scene. One of two women to be recognized as a local up and comer at the final Lilith Fair, in 1999, Melanie Susuras has since become a staple in the Denver music community.

Built around her acoustic guitar work and her powerful voice—comparisons to the Indigo Girls or Susan Tedeschi aren’t at all out of line—Susuras’ songs fit nicely within the mold crafted by the Lilith Fair. Susuras doesn’t rely upon the femme-rock catalog, however, as her heartfelt lyrics and her band’s handle on low-key chops make her a songwriter who’s got enough of her own ideas (and more than enough of her own talent to boot) to be an act that doesn’t need the life-support of a built-in Lilith scene to survive.

Summer might be cooling down, but the future of this band is definitely not! With the cool, powerful, sultry voice of Susuras delivering impassioned lyrics, David Derby on the drums, the MSB band is unquestionably hot! If your summer plans have not included a night out on the town its time to get out and enjoy some musical heat.

Bio

The Melanie Susuras Band (MSB) is the perfect blend of catchy songwriting, breathtaking vocal talent and dazzling musicianship. Whether you attend an all-out rockin' full-band show or an intimate acoustic performance, the fire and passion comes through loud and clear. MSB’s acoustic driven rock is a blend of acoustic folk, rock and funk that adds up to create an extremely danceable sound.

From the clubs of Denver Colorado, The Melanie Susuras Band rose to the pinnacle of the local music scene in 1999 with their debut album, “Barefoot Again”. That summer, they shared the stage with Sheryl Crow, The Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan and The Dixie Chicks when they were awarded the honor of playing the 1999 Lilith Fair. Since then, MSB has made many guest appearances with a variety of acts including Tab Benoit, Darden Smith, Stacy Earle, Lowen and Navarro, Styx & Peter Frampton and continues to flourish as one of the Denver-area's favorite original acts.
MSB’s new CD “Stop to Stand”, released in June 2008, is once again a testament to the fact that Melanie is a world class singer/songwriter with a powerful, yet smooth vocal style.

There’s a reason she’s risen to the head of her genre.

After my bike ride, a bunch of folks met Delynn and I down at the Soiled Dove to see Melanie Susuras play. It's been clear since I saw her play the first time that she has an astounding voice and song writing skills to match. But this is the first time her voice was matched by a band worthy of it. Strong words, but these guys brought the house down.
---LINEAR PULL, Late Night Post

"In the years I've known and worked with them, MSB continually proves to be amongst the best in class in the Denver area, and Melanie herself is one of the best singer / songwriters around."
