"J. Ross Parrelli: Lov’n Makin’ Music"

J Ross Parrelli, a California native, is making a name for herself on this side of the country, winning first place in the January edition of the monthly Elegant Hoodness Musical Program, calling attention to her independent release, Lov’n Mak’n Music.

J Ross has ventured to the New York City area to stir the waters a bit in the underground scene, so a visit to Elegant Hoodness was definitely on her schedule. Judges for the evening included the legendary super producer Domingo, and as a result, a collaboration of some sorts with J Ross and Domingo is in the works. N.A.B. of course sat down with J Ross Parrelli to discuss Elegant Hoodness, Lov’n Mak’n Music and pursuing change through music.

N.A.B.: J Ross Parrelli, is that your birth name or stage name?

J Ross: It’s a mixture of both. I stay close to my roots, but some things are just acquired through the fam that gets to know your characteristics.

N.A.B.: You sing and rap like you’ve been doing it since birth. How long have you been singing and rapping? Do you prefer any one over the other?

J Ross: I been swinging from trees and singing since I was a ye’ little one. Karaoke closet junkie all through high school, but really didn’t sing openly until college, with my brother. The truth is, I have a love affair with lyricism. After singing, I was intrigued with words more then melodies. Singing is like my oxygen, my umbilical chord to my soul, my lifeline… But lyrics… Good meaningful lyrics, interesting enough to make people not only want to sing, but listen to, are the true challenge. Once I got in to slam poetry in college, I was a wordsmith junkie. Lyrics and emceeing keeps my heart beating.

N.A.B.: Your style is very different. Who are some of your inspirations?

J Ross: Growing up with Motown, the Jackson 5, Earth, Wind and Fire, Cher, The Temptations, and also jazz like Keiko Mansui, Brand New Heavies, Jeff Bradshaw… But when I heard reggae, I rediscovered my faith in music. I fell in love with Bob Marley first, Steel Pulse, Judy Mowatt… That turned me out into KRS-One and Arrested Development. I just love good music. I love soul, Fefe Dobinson, Stephen Marley, Sizzla, Sade, Talib Kweli, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald. Give me it all…

N.A.B.: What is your purpose in music? Some do it for the love, others do it for the money. What do you do it for?

J Ross: I do it for change. “Every movement spent is one in a forward movement.” I tie a lot of what I do with Soar Nation. Soar Nation links non-profit organizations with public and private businesses, so when you buy a t-shirt you love, a percentage goes to a non-profit of your choice. You buy Billibong and Pur, donates 10 gallons of clean water to people who need it most. Soar Nation and Road Trip Nation also sponsored myself and Yanski (founder of Soar) to drive cross-country, from California to NY, interviewing homeless veterans. Hip Hop in High School is a series of workshops that we teach amongst youth, specifically at-risk youth, and we are constantly doing benefit shows to raise money for youth programs. I am community bound. With a belief that one day I’ll make it to the top where money is not an issue. That’s the goal. The dream is to see change in our government, communities and global living situations through music.

N.A.B.: 2010, you brought the year in right winning first place at The Elegant Hoodness Musical Program in NY in January. How was your experience at Elegant Hoodness? Does it differ from showcases in Cali?

J Ross: In all honesty I’ve never rocked a competition in Cali. Emcee battles, definitely, but not showcases. NY has their grind, it’s a whole different grind with music. It seems like Cali, Hollywood specifically, is more the hustle of movies and acting.

Elegant Hoodness on the other hand, was a chance for me to check who’s out here on the East Coast and see what the music scene is bringing to the table. Each competition I have been to out here, like 50 Mics, Hot 97, everybody seems to carry a similar style, in terms of swag, lyrics and/or production. Elegant Hoodness actually has a meaning behind it, a community, folks that take the music and turn it into change. N.A.N and N.A.B., there is more than music, there is fam..

N.A.B.: Talk about your project “Lov’n Mak’n Music”.

J Ross: Wow, this project. This project was about six to eight months of the best and worst days of my life. A homey of mine and fellow emcee Eyezon introduced me to a producer of his over the phone and we hit it off. Sean Lane was out there in South Carolina listening to some J Ross Parrelli and thought it was a good idea to give up everything he owns and come out to Long Beach to put a project together. I felt honored and blessed since his talents… Ah damn!!! I mean, just listen to a track off the album. There is no song that sounds like another. He has such amazing production… We got to utilize my live band as well as throwing in violins, saxophones, guitars, stand up bass and trumpets. That whole live element just brings music up to another level.

The biggest inspiration was losing my dearest friend and musical alibi, Dread I (Isaac Canales) midway through the project. Dread I directed the music for the band and wrote a lot of the original J Ross Parrelli instrumentals, so that really got me on my toes, hustle face on, upper hand strong. So for me this album signifies him. I’m lov’n mak’n music!

N.A.B.: What is one thing that you would like people to remember about your music?

J Ross: My music is love, my music is real, my music is for change, it’s for humanity, it’s for my family, and for the struggle. I represent people.

N.A.B.: Any shoutouts?

J Ross: My grandma, shout out to my hot grammy, RDTC, Soar Nation, Dread I, Collective I in LBC, One Love Community in LBC, YanSki, Calafia Zulu Nation and to my people.

"Artist of The Week"

As I’m sure you all know by now, I’m very open to recommendations when it comes to music. When my homegirl, super talented fine artist Blair Urban, told me I should link up with her friend J Ross Parrelli I added her on various social networking sites and we started talking. I also started listening to her music. Months passed and I came back to her work a number of times. There was really no defining it. With elements of reggae, soul and hip-hop Parrelli and her band have created something original, and I love when artists can still do that in 2010, and do it with instruments rather than a computer.

This week I caught up with Parrelli to learn about her musical history, how she’s been livin since she moved to NYC, and the three places you’ll never find her.

Adam Bernard: Start everyone off with the J Ross Parrelli story. Where are you originally from and what’s your path in music been like?
J Ross Parrelli: The roots of the Parrelli family lie deep in the Hundred Acre Wood... No, actually, I grew up in Northern Cali, out in the foothills of Placer County where gold was discovered back in the ‘49 gold rush days, four brothers deep, with names all starting with Js. We thought we were the J5. Eventually this lead me to be in a band with one of my brothers. He rapped, I flavored it with some soul. We played reggae festivals all over California from the Sierra Nevada to the Northwest World Reggae Festival, but eventually it was time to “move it on up” and experience some culture, so I transferred to CSULB (California State University, Long Beach) and moved to Long Beach. There I got a degree in Human Development, participated in the CSULB Slam Poetry team, was awarded with the Best Political Poem in the nation, and began my career as a battle emcee. I got a band together in 2005 - Tulasi, a five piece band Dread I, the keyboardist and producer, and I started and eventually evolved in to ADACA Soul, a seven piece band that includes a female DJ, Mighty JuneBugg, female violinist, and back up singers, the Dreadetts.

Adam Bernard: And you recently made quite the move.
J Ross Parrelli: You get to a point in your career where nobody takes you seriously unless you give up everything you own to follow your dreams. I have an amazing support team, and with the encouragement of my man Yanski we decided to go to the east and see what it has to offer. Thus far it has been gracious. Entering battles and competitions and winning first place out of 25 emcees at Hot 97’s Who’s Next competition. Opening and hosting with Rah Digga. Participating in 50 Mics, Elegant Hoodness, End of the Weak, Braggin Rites... this has been an amazing experience and opportunity, to be in NYC and actually taste the difference in music here.

Adam Bernard: How different is NYC from Cali in terms of music?
J Ross Parrelli: Dramatically different. Of course there is the more laid back flow of West coast music. There’s a different bump to the music even in our gangster rap, it is a slower flow, you know... Ice Cube, B-Real, Snoop. 2Pac is universal but really displays the highest quality of West coast, as well as Dre. On the East coast you got Supernatural, Wu-Tang, 50, Jay-Z... it’s a faster flow, it’s tighter knit. This is not to say one’s better than the other, but you know the difference.

Adam Bernard: You sing, you rhyme, and you have reggae influences. What are the plusses and minuses of being so diverse?
J Ross Parrelli: No one knows how to categorize you. Everyone automatically associates musicians like “ohh she sounds like Joss Stone, Jill Scott, Christina, Lauryn.” We want to box musicians in to a genre and really, I’m genre-free when it comes down to it. I want to invent my own genre called “fresh.” “Oh that, that’s that fresh music. Everybody’s doing it.” On a positive note, you really can’t just be one thing anymore. You gotta sing and rap, or play guitar, or dance, or do poetry. Being diverse, especially being a light skinned female, the shock value is priceless. Being able to jump on the stage and sing, flip familiar reggae tunes, as well as emcee writtens and freestyles, folks kind of trip out.

Adam Bernard: What projects are you working on right now?
J Ross Parrelli: I’m always recording. I want to be like Pac, MJ and Marley and leave my footprints in about 300 tracks. I have three mixtapes in the making. I am really looking for that one producer that is willing to challenge my sound to a whole new rhythm. I’m currently working with an amazing network called Soar Nation, where we can change the way people buy. I’ll be one of the first musical artists participating in their “Philanthro-capitalism” campaign. The website and campaign will launch in September for a West coast college tour, and the re-release of my EP Lov’n Mak’n Music (which Blair Urban did the cover art for) will be available in October.

Adam Bernard: What are your passions outside of music and how do you find time for them?
J Ross Parrelli: To me music is like a way of life. I work out to make my breathing stronger. I practice daily to be the best I can be. Part of being a musician is a responsibility to share and teach your gift, so my main passion is the community and the youth. I am constantly finding inspiration in the youth with the workshops that I teach, and the workshops that I take. Knowledge is my passion and I am always looking for it.

Adam Bernard: Finally, everyone likes their privacy, but hit me with three places where people will definitely never find J Ross Parrelli.
J Ross Parrelli: 1) Meat market. I'm a vegetarian.
2) Drake's dressing room... unless we are going to battle, in which case I will meet him anywhere.
3) Bilderberg meeting... unless we have water balloons in hand, bull horns and good gas masks.

“Hey There Sista” Hip Hops newest voice

"I want to give love back", says artist J ROSS-PARRELLI.
Rarely do we see an artist that is willing to give more then they have.

" J ROSS-PARRELLI is an internationally known artist that has toured from the West Coast of Africa through the islands of Hawaii to the cities of Russia. Known for performing alongside artist such as Les Nubians, Pharcyde, Raekwon (Wu-Tang) and Kymani Marley and collaborating with such artist as Speech (Arrested Development), Sizzla, Supernatural, Akil the MC (Jurassic 5) and KRS-ONE with his "Stop the Violence Movement". J ROSS has established herself within the music community as a well respected artist and performer.

With a voice so soulful it feels like a chocolate delicacy melting in mouth, a rich vocal tone, as well as conscious lyrics, J ROSS-PARRELLI has succeeded in taking her musical career from SLAM POETRY "open mics" to headlining major international festivals. Festivals such as Nigeria's Calabar festival with Steel Pulse, NOrthwest World Reggae Festival with KRS-ONE and Barrington Levy, the UCI Reggae Festival with Pato Banton and LA's Key Club with Les Nubians.

J ROSS-PARRELLI has prided herself in being an active community member, teacher and contributor. Working with underprivileged youth she has spent countless hours teaching workshops showing the positive side of hip hop. "To Diva or not to Diva" shows the respectable side of women in the industry and "Emcees: an egoless state" shows the difference between cockiness and confidence as well as how to develop your freestyle-self.

As well as workshops, J ROSS-PARRELLI will be embarking on a tour called "HOMELESS HEROES", focusing on our homeless veterans left out in the street. THe tour will focus on a variety of workshops, performances and interviews with homeless veterans which will be put in to a cross-country tour documentary to go hand in hand with Roadtrip Nation.

In 2009, J ROSS-PARRELLI pushed her musical career in the direction of Pop Music within R & B, Hip Hop and New Age genres. Working with North Carolina producer Sean Lane, J ROSS-PARRELLI has completed "Lov'n Mak'n Music" her debut full-length album. The album shows the versatility and creativity of the duo's five-month development process, yielding an album of amazing music that has recieved stellar reviews in it' period of limited release. With four "singles" to be released through this album, "Lov'n Mak'n Music" will be sure to reach high levels of success.

"Hip hop has nothing to do with being a man or a woman, it has to do with rebellion and relating, so I've really tried to focus my skills around relating to the youth, giving them someone that they can look up to". The first single to be released entitled "Hey there Sista" exemplifies MS PARRELLI's charisma on the mic, but to really get a taste of J ROSS-PARRELLI you have to witness her live performance. Alongside a band or her DJ, J ROSS-PARRELLI will astonish her crowd and leave you thirsting for more.
