Bio

Mubarak Hakim, a Detroit native, has always enjoyed rhythmic music when even a toddler, he beat on his mom’s oatmeal cereal boxes in the kitchen. He also grew up listening to Mongo Santamaria and soon began his studies in African drumming with Sundiata Keita and the Omowale Cultural Society.

Hakim toured throughout the Midwest with Sundiata’s group performing and conducting workshops at universities, festivals and concerts. Hakim also studied and worked with many widely known African percussionists including:

• Dr. Kwasi Adouonum, former artistic director of the National Dance Ensemble of Ghana West Africa
• Baba Ishangi Razak, director of the Ishangi Family Dancers of Nigeria West Africa
• Baba Chief Hawthorne Bey, founder of the Sun Drummer Society out of New York and Chicago, USA
*Jazz Trumpet Legend Marcus Belgrave and drummer Roy Brooks.

Continuing his intensive studies, Hakim was blessed with the opportunity to study with Mor Thiam, who is a master percussionist from Senegal West Africa. Hakim successfully completed courses in African drum technique and African drum theory and advanced rhythms.
