Su an sadece itunes üzerinden satis yapiyoruz. - Sabah USA

Türk genci Emre Atabay'in kuruculari arasinda oldugu Muj müzik grubu, Amerika'da kendinden söz ettirmeye basladi. Türk asilli Emre Atabay ile Amerikali Allen Hulsey ikilisinin olusturdugu Muj, ABD'de gelecek vaadeden müzik gruplari arasinda gösteriliyor.

Tanismalari Berklee Müzik Koleji'nde baslayan ikiliden Atabay ''Music Synthesis''den, Hulsey de ''Jazz Composition'' bölümünden mezun oldu.

Emre'nin yogunlastigi alanlar prodüksiyon, kayit, ses dizayni, elektronik üzerine olurken, Allen da, orjinal kompozisyonlar, akustik müzik ve 'slide gitar' alaninda yogunlasti. Bu ögeleri birlestirip, mikrotonal, avant-garde, klasik, blues, dogu ve Türk müzikleriyle emprovizasyon yapmalari Muj'un baslangicini olusturdu. Berklee Müzik Koleji'nden mezun olduktan sonra hayalleri olan Muj'u New York'ta kurdular. Ardindan 2012 albümünün çalismalarina basladilar.

Albümun prodüksiyonunu Manhattan'daki apartman dairlerinde kendileri yapan ikili eserlerinde, beste, söz ve müzikler, kayit ve aranjmani kendilerine ait olup, bütün enstrumanlari kendileri çaldi. "Muj Is On"

Muj’s debut album, 2012, is a fresh blend of musical genre, a sound that is deceivingly mature and significantly personal. The Turkish-American duo created 2012 in a little over a year, jamming out and recording in their Brooklyn apartment/studio, occasionally calling on the help of musical friends to add to the creativity.

While overall this is a pop album, it hits on many elements. From country western style vocals, rock, dance pop, electronic and more, it is meant to be a combination of styles, creating an original persona.

The album opener is a mix between rock and soulful alternative music. Called “Elastic”, this song features vocals that sound “Auto Tuned” and electronic; its most catching feature is a synthetic arrangement that reflects the track name and the kind of trip-hop that Radiohead peppered over Kid A.

“Blue My” is the most interesting track. Through each verse, the guitar follows carefully behind the vocals, like a long shadow, and then forges ahead near the end, peaking at a smooth blues jam-out that welds the song together.

The thread connecting each song links directly to the duo’s self-production and sampling of almost every instrument that ended up on the final record. Muj’s masterminds: Emre Atabay and Allen Hulsey worked to perfect the arrangements and symphonize each harmony on this album. Yet, the end result sounds naturally submersed, embracing each genre explored, begging a second and third listen.

A lot of that compliment has to do with track placement. One example is how the last three songs set one another up by carrying over distinctive beats that transition from one, to the next. “Nothing’s” vocals are slightly twangy. It combines a country-western feel with a 21st century rock song. The beat then trickles onto the opening cords of the electro-punk “Technoholic”, which then sets up the final song’s tone. “Time of Our Lives” touches on dance experimentation, and is one successful attempt at mass appeal on 2012.

The sound of Muj is thoroughly New York. They are trendy yet crafty. 2012 embellishes on European dance nostalgia and pop rock by combining some electro-punk elements and traditional guitar sounds.

While it is complex, the bare bones of this album: the guitar playing, the lyrical contribution and the beat make it a solid effort and a well-received debut album. A band that we will likely be hearing a lot more of, the talent and experience these two Berklee grads bring to music, is something we cannot wait to see on a stage.

2012 can be purchased now on iTunes and CD Baby, concert information and dates to follow. - Wine & Secrets

"Muj - Got You"

Although formed and based in the USA where the pair met at college, Muj are a duo of Turkish descent and the music they create reflects their transcontinental journey, mixing a variety of familiar genres with the influence of traditional Turkish structures and sounds. It's a great approach that gives their style-mashing music a slightly exotic bent that may not be familiar to those accustomed to more routine Western pop and rock fodder. Debut album '2012' has steadily built up momentum and plaudits, and the release of this new video/single will hopefully help spread the word further still.

It seems incredibly apt that such label-hopping music is accompanied by similarly mixed up visuals, combining animation with live action, black and white with colour and regular speed with sped up footage. Much like the song, the video for 'Got You' is a little trippy and surreal, but huge fun at the same time. The track itself is an exquisite fusion of electro-pop, indie-rock, baroque and big beat sounds. You can try and tag it if you like, but you'll probably find it'll wriggle free with casual grace and then stick its tongue out at you, knowing full well that labels are for jam jars and not music. A real Turkish delight and no mistake. - The Sound Of Confusion

"Seven Questions in Heaven with Muj"

Muj is a New York City duo whose kickass video "Got You" was our Song Of The Day earlier this morning. We decided we wanted to know a little bit more about the band, so we spent Seven Questions in Heaven with Allen Hulsey and Emre Atabay.

Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
Emre: Muj is a duo with two frontmen. Our music breaks the boundaries of genres and includes everything from electronic to acoustic songs.

Allen: On "Got You" for example, we have included the Saz, a Turkish folk instrument.

Emre: We are a hands-on DIY self-produced band.

Who are your musical influences and idols?
Emre: Queen, Pink Floyd, Radiohead.

Allen: Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, The Rolling Stones.

What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
Emre: The first cassette I wanted from my mother was Pavarotti at age 3. I then bought Queen, Michael Jackson, and Prodigy.

Allen: The first CDs I bought were Alice In Chains' Unplugged and Pearl Jam's Ten.

What's the story behind the band's name?
Allen: Ask Emre.

Emre: Ask our lawyer.

Tell us about the documentary you're working on.
Emre: It's going to be the dark side of Muj.

Allen: The documentary will focus on what we care about most: music.

I love the video for "Got You." There's so much going on. What does the video signify for you? What does the masked man represent? What is Mujland? With the animation, how long did it take to create?
Emre: Muj is an idea and a philosophy we created together. This environment welcomes people into the land of Muj.

Allen: The "Got You" video was filmed in two days by Selin Baykal. She created the animation and edited the video in two weeks.

Emre: The masked man is the dealer who holds the key to the gates of MujLand. As you can see in the video, we have the last laugh.

What's next for Muj?
Emre: We share an important bond dating back to our introduction. I am Turkish and Allen is an American who grew up in Turkey.

As a New York based band it has always been exciting to meet our Turkish fans. This summer happens to be the time for us to play in Turkey. We will be filming a music video for our single "Elastic" in Istanbul. - Culture Brats

Bio

Not walking the line between na trapeze, epic-symphonica, and electropunk, the music duo Muj is a mish-mash of musical styles. Founders Allen Hulsey and Emre Atabay crossed paths in 2004 at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Their early music was influenced by Eastern microtonal music and avant-garde composers such as John Cage, Terry Riley, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. After exploring a catalogue of genres, they directed their focus on mainstream styles and formed the band Static Picture, recording the EP WhiteWash in 2006. Fusing psychedelic soundscapes with subterranean beats, this was just the start to the vision that would soon become Muj.
Upon moving to New York City, in 2008 they formed the ethereal, charismatic pop twosome Muj, refining their sound into its current incarnation, music that encompasses the best of dance pop, rock, world, trip-hop, and techno. They soon released their self-produced debut album 2012 to rave reviews and comparisons to Depeche Mode, Franz Ferdinand, Radiohead, MGMT, and The Killers. Their unique production ties intelligent pop sounds to compositional structures from European classical music and Turkish music. Muj is described as having “timeless hooks and melodies that are hauntingly familiar, that feel as if we’ve already heard them.” In their performances, their carefully conceived, tastefully sparse studio sound is the starting point for playful improvisations and unexpected intense instrumentations. Muj segues seamlessly from ferocious, soaring guitar jams to moving melodic departures. They are now working on a feature-length documentary including an original soundtrack.
