Mukhalef is an adventurous new sound that blends khaleeji tradition with space, jazz, & unorthodox grooves. Yousif Yaseen's powerful and spirited vocals combine with Abdulla Haji's sax lines over a tight groove by bassist Ahmed Alqasim & and drummer Ahmed Alfardan.

Mukhalef was born out of a shared fascination with both contemporary harmony and folk music from Kuwait & Bahrain, with a particular interest in the art of Sawt. Yousif Yaseen, whose grandfather was a Nahham (singer on pre-oil pearl diving and trading ships), had already had recorded an album, Visions, with his NYC based group and had invented a new technique to play arabic maqams on the western guitar. 

After visiting Bahrain he quickly joined forces with celebrated bass player and singer Ahmed Alqasim, whose background in jazz & arabic music gave dimension and depth to the music. Abdulla Haji's sweet and lyrical saxophone colored the picture, and Ahmed Alfardan's neo-soul, gospel inspired drumming brought it all home. "Mukhalef" is a name of a Bahri rhythm that is popular in the gulf, and the band has a sound that is unique and forward thinking, while still retaining a respect for those who have come before them.
