"Mulready Street @ The Boarwalk January 05 - Reviewed"

Mulready Street had their first single 'My Trace' played by Steve Lamaq on Radio One not so long ago and within a few bars of their skate punk influenced performance they clearly tower head and shoulders above the other bands on the bill tonight.

They are confident, proficient and what’s more actually talk to the crowd, too much at times as a heckler informs them politely to play a f***ing song! They oblige, after which nobody is complaining.

Ending on their now legendary cover versions of Old Macdonald and the Outhere Brothers’ ‘Boom Boom Boom!’ they leave the stage having drawn many of the younger audience members to the front and with almost everyone in the venue to tapping their feet.

There are definitely a few singles lurking in their forty minute set, their first ‘My Trace‘, backed with ‘Uncle Simon’ is out now on 7” vinyl and available from www.willowrecords.co.uk. - www.sheffieldbase.com - Students online newspaper

Bio

MULREADY STREET

Mike Crawshaw - Vocals. Rob Gurruchaga - Guitar, Backing vocals. Tom Hudson - Drums, Backing vocals. Martin Warsop - Bass.

Mulready Street have been on the edge of the scene for many years now. A professional outfit making music that ranges from fast absurd pop-punk to thought provoking commentaries on everyday life. Loud noisy rock guitars mixed with fast-paced drumming and punky bass all topped off with an enigmatic vocal delivery.

With influences ranging from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Oasis, Ash, Supergrass - through to modern bands such as NOFX, Foo Fighters, Green Day, their sound is a mix of Emo, Rock, Punk, Ska even a bit of metal thrown in there for good measure. No Spinal Tap here though mate!

Mulready Street have played a variety of venues in England - including Sheffield (Leadmill, Boardwalk, Barfly, NMB, Corporation, The Harley) , Manchester (Music Box), Leeds (Cockpit), Liverpool (Cavern) and London (The Garage), with bands such as Reel Big Fish, Rachel Stamp, Right turn Clyde and Jesse James. The local press have always been kind too, with reviews in the Sheffield Star, Students Union magazine, Local fanzines as well as a review in Kerrang! More recently the band have played a string of local gigs, which included entertaining the lagging crowd at the St Patrick's day celebrations in Sheffield City Centre. Mulready Street performed punked up covers of Pogues tracks and of course their own material, encouraging some interesting Irish jigs!

Having recorded an e.p. worth of tracks in 2002 with highly acclaimed producer Rob Gordon, and now working with Willows Records - October 2004 saw the release of their debut 7” single - My Trace (A two and a half minute pop punk explosion! - Rough Trade) . Already gaining Radio One support in the shape of Steve Lamacq on his influential show, and student radio airplay. Even the major retailers got in on the act, with much appreciated support in the form of HMV, Fopp as well as indie retailers such as Rough Trade in London and Piccadilly Records in Manchester. Fans of the single have emerged from such far flung places as Holland, Germany as well as Australia - a surprise even to the band!

July 2005 saw the band head to a barn in a deep deserted area of Lancashire, once again with Rob Gordon and his On Location crew, to start recording tracks for an album. The result, which is due for release early 2006, sees a much darker and more mature edge to the bands sound - but still mixed with good pop sensibilities. The first single is due out early October, which will see the band touring up and down the country to promote their wares.
