- Gaffa - (5 of 6 stars)

"Slo-core beauty"

Reviewing an album as hushed and hypnotic as this slo-core beauty from Camilla Munck and Moogie Johnson almost guarantees a Pseuds Corner spot. But their second album really is as weightless as a feather tapping a bubble, the fusion of their airy voices (Last Wish) less duet than sigh. The minimalist beauty Slavesong will delight insomniacs, miserabilists will love the wheezy mournful organ and chilling vocal of The Streets - Mojo - (4 of 5 stars)

"An angel’s voice"

Danish duo Camilla Munck and Moogie Johnson meanwhile emerge from the ashes
of slow-core, country tinged Wynona to make a sound similarly filled with longing
and loss, damage, despair and the sweetest dereliction. Their Count Your Blessings
set (Ponyrec) is the sound of rural daydreams sketched by an angel’s voice through
frosted snow bound windows as electrical wires hum and crackle and ghosts thrash
electric guitars in the attic. - Plan B

"Fine anelser"

- Politiken (4 of 6 hearts)

"Faszinierend"

"Lick your wounds!"

Turn off the lights, count your blessings and lick your wounds!

"Munck//Johnson are here to help"

Still bummed because Minnesota mopemeisters Low got all rocked up on their last album and subsequently didn't provide the misery/melancholy quotient you counted on them for? Relax, my frowning friends; Munck//Johnson are here to help. On their second album, the Danish duo sound incredibly like Low at times, and Camilla Munck shouldn't feel at all belittled to be called the Danish Mimi Parker. Her voice is just as lovely, just as capable of expressing deep, private sorrow that doesn't reveal its source openly. "Last wish" and the evocative organ utilized on "The streets" are unquestionably Low-ish (never more than when those tight harmonies deliver the goods). But my favorite tracks are the beautifully eerie "This time," which features electric guitar washes distorted to create an evocative ambient soundscape over which sparse synth and the quietly sombre vocal effectively stir up your most buried emotions, and the graceful piano-laden "Be kind," which is truly lovely. Elsewhere, several tracks are just Moogie Johnson's simple acoustic guitar and Camilla's delicate voice ("Ellis of Davenport," "Sweet and lowdown," "Flesh and bone"). While this is often downbeat music, it's engaging and poetic, and it always feels genuine. With a little patience, anyone into introspective, soul-searching music should be able to appreciate this disc, which is a tad more consistent than last year's debut.

"This is one of the best vocal albums I've heard this year"

Listening to Unlike You is like listening to stellar unreleased demos of Sarah McLachlin and Over The Rhine. Vocalist Camilla Munck has a sultry and textured voice that often balances between power and frailty, and multi-instrumentalist Moogie Johnson captures the moments of breaking with vintage keys and minimal guitar work. The mix is lo-fi rough-on-purpose, and only adds to the tender slant of the record, although one can't help but wonder what a polished version of this Danish duo might actually sound like. There are moments, like on the sleepy "Ease Me", that echoes melancholy Sufjan Stevens. Within the melodies, you could hear a pin drop...it's that intimate. I almost feel like an intruder sometimes. The songs aren't hidden behind gimmick arrangements. "Sister Mine" is a simple power ballad of the highest order, giving evidence that this band should definitely be making waves in the indie-pop scene. Their dream-pop tendencies give the (mostly) already sad narratives a sense of total loss and brokenness. This is one of the best vocal albums I've heard this year. I hope this record gets marketed as well as it was made. I want to buy their t-shirt.

Bio

Munck//Johnson is a Danish duo, consisting of singer Camilla Munck and musician Moogie Johnson.

They first met up in 1999 in the Danish Alt-Country act, Wynona, sweeping both the press and audience off their feet. Five years of playing and touring later they decided to explore what have come to be Munck//Johnson.

Munck//Johnson spent most of 2004 founding their own label, Laura Lee Records, writing and recording their debut. This album, 'Unlike You', was released in autumn, receiving spectacular reviews followed up by intimate concerts.

2005 led to the signing of Munck//Johnson to PonyRec, the re-release of the debut and touring outside of Denmark.

Later that summer Munck//Johnson started recording the second album. 'Count Your Blessings' was released on Danish ground in February 2006. Once again the minimalistic universe of Munck//Johnson conquered the hearts of all listeners.
