Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs, Whelan's, Friday June 20th.

It was quiet enough down in Whelan's on Friday 20th June as Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs got all-set to hoe-down old-style. A combination of Euro 2008 quarter-finals and Spencer Tunick enforced curfews no doubt damped enthusiasm for Albion's finest bluesist. Drop-D moseyed it's way down Wexford St. regardless, and popped in for our second look at the refurbished indie haven. Initial misgivings at the failure to relocate the bar, for one, gave way, as the charm of stage-front tables provided a hint of true blues club feeling in this normally unenthralling venue.

Dublin's own Murder Plan got proceedings underway with their erratic brand of soulful blues. Taking heavy influence from Tom Waits, the piano-led quintet indulge their pop sensibilities to weigh against the experimental aspects of their sound. Megaphone-brandishing aside, chanteuse Stephanie O'Keeffe scales notes and heights rarely heard at barely half-past eight of a Friday. Her booming timbre holds the key to this act's success, one would think, along with her all-male troupe's ability to best showcase her talent.

Murder Plan

I have to admit they weren’t what I was expecting, forgive me on this, but I was expecting an Emo band or something with a name like that!! But anyway, I was pleasantly surprised I must say. They were pretty cool, mixes of all sorts of things happening there with little bits of funk, jazz and blues thrown in for good measure. That girl (Stephanie) has an amazing voice, was really impressed... I really liked the set, the guitarist and the bassist: I enjoyed watching them play as they really looked like they were enjoying themselves..... some great piano playing as well. I would say they would be a cracking band to see in a smaller venue, they did look like they were having fun and it's fun to watch a band have fun.
